the life drive

a triangle has three directions, each asking for a decision. it can exist even without this decision. life is made of thousands of such triangles. choices. interests. abilities. drivers. values. responsibilities. sor t out these triangles. direct them. know, develop and express. create a whole, one, integrated - you. exist versus create. the dif ference is the life drive.

Choose easy, work hard : Talk By Angela Lee Duckworth

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-_j70GKxPU&list=PLNu8fjB6zFAOCywTtZDOCoHhm4OWbwW1m

Introductory note: Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth, a scholar at University of Pennsylvania defines grit as passion and perseverance for long term goals. She and her colleagues have been studying the role grit plays in exceptional performance. Based on their research of wide range of domains from spelling bee competition to military academies, they have found that grit is often the single most important attribute that differentiates the true champions. You can watch this 15 minute video to learn about the key findings of their research. She also reminds us that importance of grit does not imply that talent ( or natural aptitude for a particular activity) is not important, but highlights the point that both talent and grit are important for exceptional performance. This implies that just being super talented does not guarantee champion performance and also lacking a bit in talent does not condemn one to mediocrity.

Beauty of depth, prolonged immersion, unique combination and continuous creation

Almost all journey of growth stories of great achievers have the following common themes: They immerse themselves very deeply in their fields over very long periods of time They combine their unique talents and abilities ( e.g. Steve Jobs combining his uncompromising sense of aesthetics with his burning desire to build valuable businesses ) Continuous creation: these great achievers constantly keep creating things from their core the scale, the medium, the form of the creations may vary a great lot but what is constant is the act of creation itself.

I believe that these themes are not only important for the journey of growth but for any act of creation that aspires to be of a certain standard of excellence. Thinking about these principles reminded me of three great websites that I have come across in recent past - the interesting thing is that these websites pertain to totally unrelated fields and have very different character and purpose but the themes of depth, prolonged immersion, unique combination and continuous creation are common across all of them. We may not be interested in the subjects covered in these websites, but there is a great lot to be learnt from them about all facets of creation: expressing ourselves in a manner that is meaningful to us. THE KEY QUESTION IS WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THESE CREATIONS AND START APPLYING IT IN OUR WORK ? Website : http://autrimncpa.wordpress.com/

About The Life Drive Newsletter

This newsletter is meant for someone who is interested in improving his or her work on own Journey of Personal Growth. I believe that that this Journey is about becoming the best that you can be and expressing yourself in a manner that is most meaningful to you. Each one of us has two inbuilt and perpetual drives that influence all that we do The Life Drive inspires us to create new things, seek out our true selves and engage with external world with zest and affection. At the same time, The Death Drive within us scares us, makes us harm ourselves, makes us find comfort in the lazy status quo and gets us to look at external world and other people with suspicion and violence. The Death Drive within us does anything and everything it can do to stop and derail our Journey of Personal Growth. To succeed in its objective, the Death Drive throws many traps at us, such as convincing us that the problem is not within but outside us and convincing us that the comfortable life of status quo is better than risking the challenges of self-exploration and selfexpression. How well, and whether at all we progress on this Journey is entirely dependent on whether we constantly honor our Life Drive by giving life to newer expressions of our core self and whether we succeed in defeating that enemy within ( The Death Drive) every day. Nobody and nothing outside of us can make us do this - it can happen if and only if we take complete personal responsibility of staying true to our precious and sacred Life Drive. This newsletter is meant to be a small reminder- that hopefully will make each of us take a pause and ask this question to ourselves: Did I truly honor my Life Drive today?

The Life Drive Newsletter is circulated every month. In case you wish to ad d someone to the circulation list, please send me his or her email address. The older editions of the newsletter (from March 2013) are available at :
