Aims: In this research work, the global mantle circulation simulations will be used to predict the status of the deep interior over recent geological history. The circulation models will give predictions for the contribution of the mantle to surface heat-flow and topography. The circulation models will be use to solve the equations of conservation of mass, energy and momentum together with a surface boundary condition that incorporates surface plate motion history. Since the most important factor for maturation of hydrocarbon type is heat. The increase of temperature with depth is dependent on the geothermal gradient which varies from basin to basin. The research work will be used to find the average value which is about 30C per 100 meters of depth. The predicted structure at present-day will be compared with geophysical data-sets including mantle seismic tomography images for validation. These models will be advanced further by incorporating assimilating such as seismic structure into the models and running them backwards to provide better estimates of the internal state of the mantle earlier in geological history. Methodology/ design: A major tool for understanding thermal convection in the Earths mantle is numerical modeling and simulation. Boussinesq equations a finite element code will be applied to simulate 2D Cartesian and cylindrical coordinate systems as well as in a mantle like cylindrical shell. The mantle dynamics will be controlled by using the Rayleigh number, which is the ratio of the buoyancy to viscous forces. The following equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes and Heat transfer describing the Boussinesq approximation of the mantle convection. Conservation of mass energy equation: ∂u/∂x=0 Navier-Stokes conservation of momentum: ρ.(∂u_i)/∂t=-2.ρ.∈_ijk.(Ω_j.U_k )+ρ.g.e_i-∂p/(∂x_i )+(∂δ_ij)/(∂x_i ) Energy (heat transport) + initial and boundary conditions + geometry: ρ.C_p (∂T/∂t+(U_j.∂/(∂x_j ))T)-α.T.dp/dt=∂/(∂x_i ) (K ∂T/(∂x_i ))+ρ.H+∅ The Rayleigh number is responsible for the dynamics of the mantle regime: R_a=ρ_(oαg∆Td^3 )/(K.y)=(bouyancy force)/(viscous force) Questions to be addressed by the research: A more phenomenological approach and related fundamentals in physics and mathematical theory only as far as they are indispensable for understanding the most essential features of seismic waves and their appearance in seismic records and as far as they are required for: (1) Advanced further by incorporating seismic structure into the models and running them backwards (initially literally, ultimately through formal adjoint methods) to provide better estimates of the internal state of the mantle earlier in geological history. (2)Understanding how much these source-parameter estimates depend on the precision and accuracy of the commonly used 1D Earth models. (3)Appreciating how these source parameter estimates can be improved by using more realistic (2-D, 3-D) Earth models as well as later phase onsets in the processing routines. (4)The equations, together with the plate motion history, will be solved on supercomputing clusters to evolve the models to the present-day. Indicative bibliography: Millions of years ago, the continents of Africa and South America were one land mass, as they split to from the two continents depressions were formed which created river system. Over time, water from the open ocean began to flood into those shallow channels and the liquid evaporated in the sun, leaving a thick layer of salt. One of the geo-scientific breakthroughs of this century has been the acceptance of the concept of plate tectonics. The plate tectonic model postulates that the positions of the oceans and continents are gradually changing through geologic times. Like giant rafts the continents drift over the underlying mantle. The features created by crustal movements may be mountain chains, like the Himalayas, where collision of continents causes compression. Conversely, the depressions of the Red sea and East African Rift Basin are formed by extensional plate movements. Both type of movements form large scale depressions into which sediments from the surrounding elevated areas (highs) are transported, these depressions are termed sedimentary basins. The basin fill can attain a thickness of several kilometers. The creation of the oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges leads to the strong concentration of incompatible elements from the upper mantle into the basaltic oceanic crust through the partial melting process. The seminal concept of abiotic petroleum and natural gas being primordial matter erupted from deep within the Earth was announced at the beginning of the 19th Century by Alexander von Humboldt and Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac. In 1951, Kudryavtsev originated the modern Russian-Ukrainian theory of abiotic petroleum and natural gas. Laboratory experiments demonstrating the feasibility of hydrocarbon for motion under deep-Earth conditions, even in the absence of primary hydrocarbons, provided the first major support for that theory and observational evidence is beginning to be reported. Source Rocks: About 90% of all the organic matter found in sediments is contained in shales. For the deposition of these source rocks several conditions have to be met, organic material must be abundant and a lack of oxygen must prevent the decomposition of the organic remains. Continuous sedimentation over a long period of time causes burial of the organic matter. Depending on the area of deposition, organic

matter may consist predominantly of plant remnants or of phytoplankton. These are marine algae which live in the upper layers of the oceans, and upon death sink in vast quantities onto the seabed. Plant derived source rocks often lead to waxy crudes. An example of a marine source rock is the Kimmeridge clay which has sourced the large fields in the Northern North sea. The coals of the carboniferous age have sourced the gas fields of the Southern North sea. Maturation: The conversion of sedimentary organic matter into petroleum is termed maturation. The resulting products are largely controlled by the composition of the original matter. The maturation process which starts with the conversion of mainly kerogen into petroleum but in very small amounts below a temperature of 500C (Kerogen organic rich material which will produce hydrocarbon on heating). The temperature rises as the sediment package subsides within the basinal framework. The peak conversion of kerogen occurs at a temperature of about 1000C. If the temperature is raised above 1300C for even a short period of time, crude oil itself will begin to crack and gas will start to be produced. Initially the composition of the gas will show a high content of C4 to C10 components (wet gas and condensate), but with further increases in temperature the mixture will tend towards the light hydrocarbons (C1 to C3,dry gas).

I believe in an undeniable fact that knowledge is power; I captured this idea since my childhood to pursue higher knowledge not necessarily for personal gain but more importantly for the benefit of society at large. I was exposed in to the research environment after my university education where I studied Physical Science and major in Physics, during my national service at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). I was involved in a national energy auditing project to design standard for importation of used refrigerators in to Ghana at Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) which is now a law in the energy efficiency of the Energy Commission of Ghana. I developed my first paper title Application of MATLAB to design a Solar Powered Cocoa Bean Dryer and presented it at the 24th Biannual Conference of Ghana Science Association. I have two international publication papers which are listed below; 1. I.K. Yeboah Application of MATLAB in Seismic Interferometry for Seismic Source Location and Interpolation of TwoDimensional Ocean Bottom Seismic Data, in Models and Methods in Applied Science, proceedings of the International Conference on Environment, Economics, Energy, Devices, Systems, Communications, Computers and Mathematics held at the University of Craiova Romania ISBN 978-1-61804-044-2, pp. 41- 46. 2. I.K. Yeboah Application of MATLAB-Base Solar Dryer for Cocoa Drying, in Recent Researches in Applied Computers and Computational Science, proceedings of the 11th WSEAS International Conference on Applied Computer and Applied Computational Science (ACACOS 12) Rovaniemi, Finland ISBN 978-1-61804-084-8, pp. 252 - 258. I am currently working at the Engineering Department of Regent University College of Science and Technology as a teaching assistant. I was awarded as the most promising research of 2012 by the University. I will like to further research on new technology to discover hidden minerals under the Earth, because my first international paper have motivated me. I therefore believe that when I am offered scholarship to study Master in Earth Sciences this will enable me to achieve my dream.
