HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION FIESTAS DE GUARDAR

At this time of the year we encounter, as Catholics, a number of Holy Days of Obligation. At the beginning of this month the Church Celebrated the Feast of All Saints
(which was first instituted at the monastery in Cluny, France, in 993 A.D.).

Early in December we will celebrate the Feast of our National Patroness, the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. On December 25 we celebrate the Feast of the Birth of our Savior. On January 1 we celebrate the Feast of the Mother of God. The two remaining holy days of obligation in the

United States are the Feast of the Ascension (which is now celebrated on the Sunday before Pentecost) and the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15th. In other countries there are a few variations, depending upon some of their traditions. In Mexico the December Feast to the Blessed Virgin that is very important is the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe (With the prior approval of the Apostolic See, however, the conference of Bishops can suppress some of the holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.) In some countries the Feast of the Annunciation or St. Joseph are Holy Days of Obligation. Germany celebrates as holy days the day after Christmas and the day after Easter. In Ireland the Feast of St. Patrick is a holy day of obligation. (By the way in Ireland the Feast of Saint Patrick is both a Holy Day and a Holiday. All stores and ALL BARS are CLOSED! and after Mass families get together for a feast, much like our Thanksgiving. And they do not eat corned beef and cabbage. They have mutton.) The National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States decreed that the Ecclesiastical Provinces of the United States may transfer the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Epiphany and Corpus Christi are also celebrated on Sunday. The Church has many Holy Days, but not all of them are as important as others in our spiritual/liturgical life as these are. In the Catholic Church, Holy Days of Obligation, are the days on which, as canon of the Code of Canon Law states, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lords day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body. Whenever January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated but we are all still encouraged to attend Mass. The exception to this are the Feasts of Christmas, December 25,and the Immaculate Conception, December 8 (our National Patroness), when we are still obliged to attend both the Feast Day and the Sunday mass when the feast falls on Monday or on Saturday. (This year the 8th will fall on a Sunday the Second Sunday of Advent takes precedence
over the Feast Day, the Feast is moved to Monday but in this case there is no obligation to go to Mass on Monday but is it highly encouraged.)

If we think that we have many Holy Days of Obligation in which we have to attend Mass now we should look back into the history of the Church when at different times there were 41, 45,... and even at one time over 100 Holy Days of Obligation. But it would be important to remember that Saturdays were then a day of work and not of rest as it is for us today. And besides celebrating the mysteries of faith and the lives of the saints, this was the Churchs way of requiring the nobility to give the faithful extra days of rest,... not over working them. Our Civil Holidays receive their origin in our Catholic Holy Days. Holy Day evolved into Holiday. In the Seven Precepts of the Church, we find the first precept calling us to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and resting from servile works. The Question that sometimes arises is, is missing Sunday Mass a Sin? The short answer is: Yes, missing Mass on Sunday or Holy Days of Obligation is a serious sin, because it disobeys the Third Commandment. "See that you keep my Sabbath because it is a sign between you and me and your generation, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctify you" (Deut. 5:12) It is not a 'meaningless rule imposed by the Catholic Church' it is a Commandment of God. A curious element of Holy Days is that the Gloria of the Mass (Glory to God...) is always sung, even in Advent and Lent, (i.e. on the Feasts of the Immaculate Conception, Guadalupe, Annunciation, Holy Thursday.). With the new revision of the Rite of Marriage, the Gloria is also required to be sung, even in Advent and Lent, and the celebration of the Sacraments of Marriage is viewed as a Holy Day!

Joseph in the Eucharistic Prayer

by Paul Turner The name of St. Joseph has been added to Eucharistic Prayers II, III, and IV. Joseph was not mentioned in any Eucharistic prayer until 1962, when Pope John XXIII added his name to the Roman Canon, the only Eucharistic prayer in use at the time (now known as Eucharistic Prayer I.) Pope John was touched by the appeal of Bishop Petar Cule from Yugoslavia, a survivor of a Communist concentration camp. St. Joseph became popular fairly late in church history. Artistic representations in the past consistently depicted him as an older man, near the edges of the nativity scene, out of the way of the main figures. He appeared too old to be the father of the child, too inessential to occupy central space. However, devotion to this obedient servant of God increased in recent centuries. As the new Eucharistic prayers were developed after the Second Vatican Council, decisions had to be made about their structure and content. The Roman Canon included a long list of saints, many from Rome. An opinion prevailed that the list should be shortened and considerably minimized in the other Eucharistic prayers. This was partly because of the original sources of Eucharistic prayers, which did not mention saints; the great number of saints throughout the Catholic world, who could not possibly be represented in one prayer; and ecumenical considerations, since other Christians do not invoke the saints as Catholics do. Thus, the fewer number of saints names was intended to express historical authenticity, restraint, and ecumenical sensitivity. Adding the name of St. Joseph is the first change to the Latin text of the Roman Missal after the revised English translation was published in 2011. The prayer of the Catholic church continually undergoes refinement. Paul Turner is pastor of St. Anthony Parish In Kansas City, MO Copyright 2013 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. BEGIN WITH ARDOR If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new ardor.

WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO DONATE, YOU AUTO THINKSVDP! When you hear those radio ads encouraging the donation of your used car, please keep in mind that your car will most likely NOT be given to someone who can use it. Such cars are usually sold at auction or dismantled for the resale of their parts. That may serve the profitpurposes of a charitable organization. Yet its not very practical for people who have serious transportation needs, but cant afford to buy a car. On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it directly into the hands of a needy person or family, so it can be usedto drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many other practical needs for getting around. We have no paper-work complications. And we have no large management salaries or administrative costs to pay. We simply serve the needy. So when youre ready to surrender your car, keep St. Vincent de Paul first on your list of options. Call 630-293-9755. Well pick up the car and get it into the hands of someone who can really use it.

We are very grateful for all of our leadership group which consists of ten Catholics for Life members: Jean Daniell, Pat Rackyleft, Linda LeBreux, Cathy Johnston, Mike and Ellen McGrath, Sylvia and Urban Oen, and Joe and Rita Grabowski. Thirty parishioners have requested to help the ministry, and they respond when their presence and support is needed with parish activities to help moms and their infants at local pregnancy resource centers. Their prayer support is most important as well as their response to legislative Action Alerts" at the state and federal levels. Leadership without response goes nowhere, so we are grateful for every member of the parish who respond so generously and support respect for life in many, varied ways. We would like to invite other parishioners to become a part of this active ministry. ~Joe and Rita Grabowski

Confirmation Retreat Prayer (7th gr.) Oct. 19, 2013

Father, we are looking for God in our life and eternal life. Also, we are looking for the ability to share Jesus with others. Thank you for creating the world. Everything we have is because of you. Without your creation we would have no life or happiness. Without your creation we wouldnt know where we stand after death. You make us feel complete. Help me make room for you in my life. Motivate me to praise you everyday and share your light with others. God, show me what is best for me and give us only what we can handle. Help keep our friendships strong and our family close. Help keep my relationship with you healthy and my love for you strong. Let me feel that I will never run out of love and that you can give me hope for when I am down. Dear Lord, thank you for bringing love into this world because your love keeps us going. Help us plant the fruit of your love into this world and help us to see your love in others. Thank you for giving us this life, through Jesus sacrifice on the cross. You are our savior and you will be forever first in our hearts. Jesus, I need you in my life even though I dont have you now. I also need you to change the hearts of others. Lord, we praise you for showing us the spirit in you. Thank you for always being there for us. Lord show us your way so that we may be forever in your hands. In our failure to do good; you grant us your mercy. Although we grieve what is wrong we pray for forgiveness and hope in your everlasting love for us. Help us to change our ways and to do what is right. Lord, I would like to pray for those who have strayed from God. I would also like to pray for those who have lost a loved one and the sick and suffering. Finally, I would like to pray for your blessing on all the Confirmation Candidates. Amen. My steps have been steadfast in your paths, my feet have not faltered. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God. Psalm17:5 6a
