Curved or v-grooved blocks may be used if economical and available. 4.4 4.5 4.6 4.7 Insulation thickness for jacketed piping systems shall be based on the operating temperature of the jacket fluid. Piping, vessels, equipment, and instruments requiring insulation shall be clean, dry and free of surface contaminants such as oil, grease, dirt, moisture, ice or snow prior to application. Painting (by others), shall be in accordance with Specification HDO-SPE-M-R01, prior to the application of insulation. Insulation of personnel protection shall be installed only in accessible areas where operating temperature of piping is 70 and above and will present a safety hazard because of location. Extent of safety insulation shall not exceed 2.1 m above nor more than 1 m away from accessible areas. Extent of safety insulation requirements shall be indicated on piping drawings. Vessels, equipment, pumps, valves, flanges, and unions shall not be insulated for personnel protection; however, if upon field inspection a possible hazard is evident, insulation, shields, guards, or other means of protection shall be provided to prevent personnel from coming in contact with hot surfaces. Pressure tests shall be completed before insulation is installed. If insulation is applied before testing, all welds, threads, and bolted connections shall be left uninsulated and exposed until completion of testing. Exposed insulation shall be weatherproofed to prevent ingress of moisture. Shop welds may be insulated if the item has been pressure tested in the shop. Decking and covering tarps shall not be allowed except in unpredictable emergencies and then only for short periods. Insulation removed from storage shall be applied the same day or returned to storage at the end of work. Work scheduling shall provide for application of permanent weather protection before the conclusion of each day's work. Should circumstances arise where this is impractical, temporary weather protection shall be provided. Adequacy of such protection shall be the responsibility of the insulation contractor. Special care shall be taken to keep aluminum sheets dry prior to application in order to prevent water staining between sheets. Special care shall be taken to keep mastics and other coatings at manufacturer recommended temperature to prevent shortening of shelf and pot life. Insulation which becomes wet due to lack of or inadequate weather protection, either temporary of permanent, shall be removed and replaced with dry insulation before proceeding with application of metal jacket or weatherproofing compounds. Materials which are inherently water resistant, such as cellular glass and perlite, need not be replaced if exposed to water; however, permanent weather protection shall not be applied until the insulation surface has dried.

INS-41 Insulation Details - Hot Pumps and Turbine

A.

Insulate steam end if specified. B. Where required, clearance must be provided for bolt removal. C. D. E. Insulate if specified. Steam end. Pump end.

NOTE : Pump end or steam end of pump shall be insulated only when called for in the schedule. On steam traced equipment wrap steam coil and casing with wire netting before applying insulating cement. 1. Insulating cement to be applied in layers not greater than 30 mm (3/4") thick with a layer of 25 mm (1") Monel hex mesh #28 gauge wire netting between layers. Each layer shall be dry before proceeding with the next.

2. Over insulation apply a 10 mm (3/8") thick layer of hard finish plaster consisting of 4 parts finish cement to one part Portland cement. Follow with 250 mm x 250 mm (10" x 10") glass fabric and final weatherproofing of a 1.5 mm (1/16") dry thick coat weather proofing mastic. 3. Where removable insulation covers are specified, use #16 gauge aluminum lined with high temperature blanket insulation or flexible insulation blankets with velcro strap.
