T
he Sonsini Animal Shelter contin-
ues to play a small part in the big
problem of cat overpopulation. Though
there's not room for many of the cats
and kittens people ask to bring to the
shelter, we don't stop helping as many
as we can. Herman is one kitty who is
on his way to a happy ending against
all odds.
He was born in a barn where, for
years, many cats have survived with lit-
tle help from humans. He came to the
shelter with eleven other kittens of var-
ious ages. If you were to meet Herman,
he would start trying right away to win
you over. He does that with every per-
son or animal he sees. He's got an out-
standing personality!
Herman is orange with white mark-
ings. He is a short-haired cat on his face
and sides, and a long-haired cat on his
back and ears. It's quite a unique look!
But Herman has other issues. He has
unusual anatomy that causes him to
eliminate differently than other cats.
And he has a condition that causes
his body to reject the enamel on his
teeth; In several months he may need
to have all of his teeth removed
Local veterinarians have been help-
ing us unravel the mysteries of Her-
man ailments during his time in
Sonsini foster care. Amidst all of
this, Herman has gained the support
of donors who have helped with his
vet bills. And he has been using his
charms to try to woo an adopter will-
ing to take on the extra responsibili-
ties of a special-needs pet. We're
happy to report that he has been suc-
cessful! A kind animal-lover will
soon be taking Herman into her
home with the intention of adopting
him after his more immediate needs
are taken care of by the shelter. She
has visited him several times and has
decided he's just the right kitty for her
family.

W
hen one already has well-estab-
lished pets, adding another to the
household takes some consideration,
concerning their present dynamics and
openness to newcomers as well as
whether the proposed adoptee enjoys
other animals. Such issues came to the
fore when I visited Purradise on Sep-
tember 28.
In the Sunshine Spa, large, amiable
tuxedo Salem lolled about on a cat tree,
completely relaxed among the several
other residents of the shelter that had
been let into this common room. Ac-
cording to staffer Tracy, Salem has des-
ignated himself king of the porch,
touching base with every cat newly in-
troduced into the room and generally
supervising their behavior, yet without
bullying them. Some cats naturally as-
sume such a role in a household as well,
serving as mentors to the brood, as well
as generally accepting additional
cats...at least, as long as the newbies re-
spect their authority.
Drawn by a sign outside advertising
10-year-old tabby Georgies availabil-
ity, Jennifer entered the shelter to meet
her: Shes a total love muffin, Jen-
nifer enthused. She currently lives with
two older cats: I wonder if shes good
with other cats. I love senior cats
theres something poignant about
themyou just see the life theyve
lived in their eyes. You dont get that in
a young cat. Theyre so open to [mak-
ing] connections. Purradise staffer
Danielle stepped in to gently point out
that a fortuitous connection might not
actually occur in this case: Georgie, she
said, is intimidated by other cats; it
would not be in her best interests to be
placed in a household in which two
other felines have already established
dominance. A more ideal situation for
Georgie would be as the only cat in a
quiet home, or perhaps even a store cat
(as she loves meeting people), she ex-
plained. Although plainly disappointed
to hear this, Jennifer began walking
around Purradise to see what other cats
were there. In the sun porch, three-
month-old tricolor tabby Athena settled
quietly beside her. Jennifer spent some
time speaking with and stroking her
and left planning to give more thought
to whether, though her initial gut pref-
erence was for a senior cat, this low-
key younger female with whom she felt
an unexpected affinity might fit in well
with her present family.
Meanwhile, in the main room, where
a few condos were tagged with hold
cards for cats also under consideration
by potential owners (a far kinder option
than sending out adoptees on a trial
basis, which is very stressful for them
and not encouraged by the shelter),
Barbara arrived to pick up two-month-
old, super lively and vocal tortie Kay
Dee, already on hold to join her house-
hold of an older cat and dog to add to
add a little excitement, she said.
Choosing someone small enough to
not be intimidating was her rationale
for selecting a kitten. She planned to se-
quester Kay Dee in her office, to be in-
troduced gradually to the other animals.
As occurred on my previous visit,
Georgie was released to walk around
the main room of the shelter and she
padded about at her ease, simply ignor-
ing the occupants of the other condos
visible to her through their respective
latched doors. She clearly appreciates
human company, and that is more im-
portant to her future happiness than is
caring for her own species. Hopefully,
she will connect soon enough with a
two-footed someone for whom
Georgies loving personality will be cat
aplenty for just the right home.

O
ctober is national Adopt-a-Shelter-
Dog-Month, and Berkshire Hu-
mane Society (BHS) is joining in the
celebration. And the timing couldnt be
better! Stop by the shelter, and youll
see that were overflowing with won-
derful dogs - young and old, small and
large, and everything in between all
looking for another chance and a for-
ever home.
According to the American Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA), about 3 to 4 million dogs are
living in rescues and shelters waiting to
be adopted. The majority is under two
years old, and about a quarter of them
are purebreds, with dogs at BHS re-
flecting these national demographics.
Typically, the number of dogs and
cats at BHS peaks in late summer and
fall. But this year, the number of resi-
dents has been even greater. During
the first week of October, 113 animals
were living at the shelter, including 27
dogs. Besides caring for two litters of
puppies, weve also taken in six dogs
who were rescued from a hoarding sit-
uation by the ASPCA. Most of these
new arrivals are toy breeds, and, de-
spite living in horrendous conditions,
are friendly and ready for their new
lives
In recent years, adopting a shelter or
rescue dog has become a growing trend
and for good reason. A 2012 poll
conducted by Edge Research and com-
missioned by the ASPCA compared the
experiences of consumers who pur-
chased dogs from pet stores with
adopters who acquired dogs from shel-
ters. Overall, the vast majority of
adopters were much happier with their
experience. They believed the acquisi-
tion process was more transparent and
honest, and they were more willing to
recommend the place from which they
got their dog than pet store consumers.
Additionally, the poll found that dogs
from shelters required less veterinary
care than dogs from pet shops.
Such results are not surprising. Ac-
cording to Roberta Townsend, Canine
Services Su-
pervisor at
BHS, mak-
ing the best
match possi-
ble for the
dog and the
new family
is a top pri-
ority of the
s h e l t e r s
a d o p t i o n
p r o g r a m.
Key to that
success is
knowledge and education. When a
dog goes home from here, the adopter
has a lot of information about that dog,
she says. We try to educate the
adopter about the dog in every way
possible to make the adoption a suc-
cess.
To that end, Roberta explains that
BHS uses several approaches to get a
sense of each dog entering the shelter.
These include two science-based pro-
grams developed by the ASPCA its
Safety Assessment for Evaluating Re-
homing, or SAFER, and its Meet Your
Match program. First, though, when-
ever a dog is relinquished to BHS, ken-
nel staff tries to gather as much
information as possible about him/her
from the owner.
After giving the dog several days to
acclimate to shelter life, staff conducts
SAFER to determine his/her aggression
risk by identifying the dogs comfort
zone with, for example, movement,
touch, and sound. Next comes the
Canine-ality that assesses the dogs
personality traits, including friendliness
and energy level, and then assigns a
color based on the results of that as-
sessment green for very active dogs,
purple for more mellow dogs, and or-
ange for moderately energetic dogs.
Based on the dogs scores and other in-
t eractions,
staff deter-

tion floor or

training.
Potential
adopters are
also included in the Meet Your Match
program. As part of their application,
adopters are asked to complete a short
survey that evaluates their lifestyle and
personality and helps them and staff se-
lect the most appropriate dog for their
home.
Like other shelters using SAFER and
the Meet Your Match program,
Cheryl Truskowski, Shelter Manager at
BHS, explains that our return rate of
adopted dogs is very low which
means more dogs are placed in their
forever homes. If there ever is a con-
cern or problem, she says, We want
adopters to know that we provide life-
long consulting from both the kennel
staff and the instructor of our Family
Dog School.
Because all the dogs at BHS are spe-
cial, during Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog-
Month, were offering some specials
to promote their adoption. In Septem-
ber, our Choose an Adoption Fee pro-
gram was so popular that were
extending it through October. For dogs
(or cats!) who have been at BHS for 30
days or longer, you decide what youd
like to donate for their adoption fee.
Then theres the Senior for Senior
program which places dogs over 7
years old with senior citizens over 60
years old for a reduced adoption fee of
$50.00 or $75.00. Anyone adopting a
dog or dogs from BHS in October
will also receive a free engraved name
tag and be entered in a raffle for a bas-
ket of dog goodies. And, of course, all
dogs leave BHS with appropriate vac-
cinations, spayed or neutered, de-
wormed, micro-chipped, and more.
Moreover, to keep dogs and cats safe,
BHS will also be offering several
micro-chip clinics on Saturday, Octo-
ber 19, from 10am-1pm, at our Barker
Road shelter, Purradise Feline Adop-
tion Center in Great Barrington, and
Bark N Cat in North Adams. The cost
is $20 and includes not only the micro-
chip but also registration with 24 Pet
Watch, BHSs micro-chip supplier.

T
hough the autumn leaves were es-
pecially beautiful this year, the sea-
sons are changing fast. As the cold
weather approaches, it becomes even
more important to be vigilant about
your animals health care. Here are a
few tips to make sure you and your
hoofed friends get through another long
Berkshire winter.
Housing: Sheep and goats can tolerate
cold temperatures relatively well, but
shelters must provide adequate protec-
tion from wind and rain. Now is the
time to make sure that barns, sheds, and
fencing are in good repair and that shel-
ters are well cleaned out. Its no fun
working on last minute projects in
snow drifts with numb fingers or scrap-
ing out mud and manure that has frozen
solid! Bedding shelters with wood
shavings or straw helps to keep animals
warmer and to absorb urine. Make sure
to maintain good airflow through the
shelter, even if it seems chilly. It may
be tempting to shut up a barn during the
coldest days to stay cozy and warm.
However, poor ventilation can lead to
damp conditions and rising ammonia
levels that can cause pneumonia and
scalding of feet and skin.
Nutrition: Animals should have access
to clean, fresh water at all times. Cold
weather can significantly decrease
water intake, leading to an increase in
the incidence of conditions such as in-
digestion and urinary calculi (bladder
stones). Keep water clear of ice and de-
bris. Position troughs or buckets in a
sheltered sunny spot, cover them par-
tially with plywood, or leave a basket-
ball or soccer ball floating in the
container to help keep the water from
freezing over. Ideally, invest in a water
heater, but check it frequently to ensure
that it is functioning properly. Alterna-
tively, just add hot water to buckets
several times a day. Animals will drink
more, and stay healthier, if water is
warmed.
Be sure that you have enough hay to
get through the winter. The majority of
sheep and goats will need only good
quality square bale grass hay, fresh
water, and a mineral source. Increase
grain rations for thin or breeding ani-
mals if necessary, but keep in mind that
a few flakes of hay will create more
heat and fuel (for far less money!) than
the more rapidly digested concentrated
feeds. Although sheep and goats will
gobble up as much grain as you give
them, this can lead to very serious
health problems including indigestion,
bloat, foot problems, thiamine defi-
ciency and even death. In male goats,
even a small amount of grain in the diet
can lead to a life threatening urinary ob-
struction
If sheep and goats are housed together,
make sure that minerals and grain are
labeled for sheep, because products in-
tended for other species can have inap-
propriate levels of minerals (sheep are
extremely sensitive to copper levels) or
medications which can be dangerous.
Body Condition: Periodically exam-
ine your flock throughout the fall and
winter to evaluate their body condition.
A thick hair coat or fleece can easily
hide signs that a goat or sheep is losing
weight, so you will need to actually put
your hands on each animal. Ribs
should be felt with slight pressure, but
never seen easily through the skin.
Also check the backbone and tail head
area for changes in fat deposition.
Without careful monitoring, by the time
you first notice an animal is thin it will
be difficult if not impossible to improve
its condition again during severely cold
weather.
Deworming: Although parasites are
more of a problem in the spring and
summer, it is important to continue to
monitor your animals mucous mem-
brane color and body condition to iden-
tify problem animals. A high parasite
burden can decrease nutrient absorption
and depress the immune system, lead-
ing to a rapid deterioration and even
death, especially in cold weather.
Dont just administer and rotate de-
wormers according to an arbitrary
schedule. Start with a fecal test to see
what parasites are prevalent and which
dewormers are effective; each flock is
different and not every animal will
need to be dewormed! Ask your vet-
erinarian for more information on the
FAMACHA scoring system for strate-
gic deworming.
Foot Care: The hooves of sheep and
goats may need trimming more fre-
quently in the winter if they arent
turned out as much. Get a good pair of
hoof shears and ask your vet or a
breeder to show you how to trim them
correctly.
If provided with appropriate shelter,
nutrition, and monitoring most sheep
and goats can thrive in even the coldest
New England winter. If you notice
weight loss, hair loss, a cough or snotty
nose, a change in appetite or fecal con-
sistency, or that an animal is lying
down more frequently or staying sepa-
rate from rest of the flock, call the vet
immediately to provide timely medical
evaluation and treatment.
Stay warm and Happy Holidays!

Tiger Lily:
A beautiful, passionate, affectionate -
albeit feisty - female, whose one wish
is to coexist with a caring, committed,
open-minded human who will happily
allow her to be who she is. Tiger Lily is
not all that fond of sharing her home
with other cats. Shes spayed, vacci-
nated, healthy and ready to pounce into
her next adventure with her new loving
family! Might that be you?
BeBe:
Meet beautiful Be-Be! She is a 2 year-
old shorthair female. Be-Be has a
sweet, silly and fun personality and a
lovely slender body. Shes not fond of
most other cats, generally preferring
humans instead, however she would
rather not be around high spirited chil-
dren. She is spayed, has had all other
necessary vet care, is ready for adop-
tion and is looking forward to her new
loving home!

Boris is a handsome 7 year old but still has plenty of
energy. Boris came to Second Chance after his pre-
vious guardian needed to move and could not take
him with them. Boris can be a little shy at first but
warms up quickly. He is out going and very alert to
his surroundings. Boris has been fine with some cats
and dogs. Come and visit Boris and give him his for-

I z z y
THIS WEEKS DOG IS:
I enjoy going for short to medium length walks. I am house broken
if given frequent outings. I can be vocal, I am a bit of an alarm barker.
That was part of my job, I alerted my family when there were things
around. Who needs an alarm system when I am on the prowl. I may
need some time to get acquainted, but once I am at ease, I am loyal
and true. Best friends. An adult household would be appreciated. Did
I mention that I love to snuggle? You can find me under the covers!

JULIE IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO
LOVES ALL TOO MUCH ...
and gets jealous of other dogs stealing her
owner's affection. She would do best in an
adult caring experienced home with a
fenced backyard and no competion (dogs
or other pets) so she could give and get all
the affection and attention. Julie loves to
play with toys and people. She likes some
male dogs but is "too bossy"

PETEY is a beautiful 3-4 year old neutered male mix
of dalmatian and staffordshire terrier. He is the most
lovable affectionate boy to people and especially
children. The only thing he loves more than people is
his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as
the only dog in a loving home with a backyard and
some humans who like to throw that red ball.
