FANTASTIC Coaches, FANTASTIC Sport
The FANTASTIC Coach campaign provides schools with a check list, and support tools to make sure their coaches are appropriately qualified, suitable and safe. 86 primary and secondary schools pledged their support to the campaign when it was launched at the County PE and School Sport Conference on 11 October 2013 and more schools have signed up since then. The Campaign is endorsed by David Ripley (Head Coach, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club), Jim Mallinder (Director of Rugby, Northampton Saints) and Chris Heaton-Harris MP. Making a difference to PE & School Sport

170 head teachers, teachers and PE practitioners from primary, secondary and special schools from across the county attended the Northamptonshire PE and School Sport Conference, at Highgate House on Friday 11th October. The conference included key note speeches from Baroness Sue Campbell (Chair of the Youth Sport Trust), Dr Akeem Ali (Director of Public Heath Northamptonshire), Linda Brooks (Principal Manor School Raunds), Chris Heaton-Harris MP and Gail Emms, the audience also attended more specific seminars and workshops. Organised by Northamptonshire Sport, the key objectives of the conference were to launch the Northamptonshire PE and School Sport Strategy, and update teachers on the government's latest PE and School Sport policies.The feedback gained from teachers on the conference was excellent with Baroness Campbell acclaimed as "Inspirational". Northamptonshire Sport works closely with Sport England and Sports Coach UKas well as local organisations and offers a range of services to both coaches and organisations who use sports coaches. The School Sports recommended provider for all of your School Coaching and mentoring support is Coaching Northants. As part of Northamptonshire Sport they believe that healthy, active children achieve more. OFSTED Guidance
Inspectors will use evidence gained from meetings with school leaders, including governors to assess the impact of additional funding on improving the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. Inspectors may also use evidence from observations of lessons and/or extra-curricular sports clubs, and discussions with pupils. Inspectors may also review the details of a schools PE and sport provision on their school website prior to an inspection. The School inspection handbook and Subsidiary guidance have been updated to include these changes. Evidence gained from section 5 inspections from September 2013 will be collated and published on the Ofsted website. Ofsted will also survey selected schools and report in early autumn on the impact of the additional funding. Some Key areas of Effective usages paying the most effective teachers an enhanced allowance to lead improvements in PE and school sport and provide staff training on how to teach PE well providing cover staff to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport paying staff or external sports coaches to run competitions, or to increase pupils participation in national school games competitions buying into existing local sports networks such as school sport partnerships or community sports coaching initiatives pooling funding with other local schools to employ a specialist teacher to train existing teachers and teach PE across a cluster of schools pooling funding to employ qualified teaching assistants to provide regular sports tournaments, festivals and competitions for pupils of all ages employing expert advice to evaluate the schools current strengths and weaknesses in PE and sport, and implement plans for improvement forging links with PE teachers in local secondary schools to help primary staff improve their PE and sports provision establishing a house system to enable regular, inter-house sports competitions for pupils of all ages Thrapston Primary School OFSTED ReportCongratulation to Thrapston Primary School Pupils also achieve well in sport and physical education. Additional funding for this is already being used well by the school to maintain the 2012 Olympic heritage; Discussions with pupils show they enjoy joining in, going to competitions and winning things. They are clear that participation in sport leads them to become fit. The willingness of staff to extend their skills through additional training is exemplified through the range of sport-related and coaching courses attended. Feedback from a neighbouring SSP School OFSTED Visit

In a neighbouring county an Ofsted inspector just asked three main questions and follow ups around the use of School Sports Funding to various Governors

Question back: Why have you spent a large percentage of your Sports Premium if you have not put a plan in place?

Brooke Weston Goalball Project

Project Background - The goalball club was initially set up to provide an opportunity for our visually impaired students to participate in a sport specific to their needs. The club started in January 2013 and resulted in Brooke Weston entered two teams to the Project Ability School Games goalball tournament. Beyond the club we have also delivered goalball during core PE lessons and National School Sports Week, which has attracted a number of other students with special needs to join the club. The club has proved so popular it is hoped that the club with extend this opportunity to young people across the County. Delivering the Project The school club has been run by PE staff, with the support of the visual impairment team that work alongside these students across the school. The goalball that has been delivered during core PE lessons and National School Sport Week have been led by London 2012 Para-Olympian Niall Graham. These sessions have also been supported and partly funded by Matthew Peleszok from Corby Oundle and Thrapston School Sport Partnership. As part of the project BBC Newsround came into Brooke Weston Academy to record a session of Goalball and interviewed some of the pupils about their experience of PE have been since London 2012. Project Impact The project has enabled students that may not have previously had the opportunity, to compete and excel in a sport. Three of our students attended a talent identification day, one of whom is now training with the Great Britain squad and another is likely to be in the next year or so. The students have developed in confidence through playing a sport where everyone is playing at their level. In terms of the whole school impact, it has raised awareness and increased students understanding of those with visual impairments. The Future Working with Greg Yarnall, Satellite Clubs and Matthew Peleszok, School Sport Manager the Brooke Weston goalball club is being developed into a community club. Sportivate and Satellite club funding, have enabled the club to pay for Niall Graham to coach and equipment which allow the club to be accessed by youngsters countywide. Four Lower Schools from the Corby, Oundle and Thrapston School Sports Partnership have received for the first 7 weeks of term funded teacher training on the delivery of football. Through the FA Tesco Skills Programme works the specialist football skills coaching have worked in Glapthorn, Nassington, Oundle primary and Thrapston Primary half a day a week providing specialist, age appropriate coaching for all ages from Years 1 to 4. The Programmes revolutionary approach to coaching football skills is truly child centred, is for all ability levels, and focuses on individual boys and girls' learning needs. As well as helping to develop the technique, ball skills and confidence of children in primary schools, The FA Tesco Skills coaches passed on invaluable lesson ideas and guidance on football coaching to their teachers. Added Value through PE As part of the program Nassington pupils were encouraged to incorporate some literacy and numeracy work of the back of the Tesco coaching. They have collated their individual stats into bar charts and written about their strengths and weaknesses. "I learnt about space, speed and disguise. I learnt football skills and I will practice my dribbling skills" "I learnt space is helpful for when you are kicking the ball. Also you use it for dribbling" "Over the seven weeks, we have been doing a lot of games... Martin taught us how to play. I have learnt a lot of new things and now I can kick a ball straight!" The coaches now move on to visit Brigstock School, Hazel Leys School, St Brendans School and St Patricks School for the half term.

Northamptonshire Arrows ProgramCorby Schools Archery

In preparation for the inaugural Corby, Oundle and Thrapston SSP Archery competition in March 4 schools will have access to 6 weeks of funded coaching to support their teams and support the teaching of a new sport in the school. Teachers and students from Brigstock School, Hazel Leys School, St Brendans School and St Patricks School will receive this support for the term The specially trained coach will deliver a 'mini' version of archery that will help provide teachers with child-friendly equipment and resources. He will use simple activities and competitions that can be used in PE lessons, across the curriculum, and support in the looking into an out of hours clubs and as part of the School Games. All pupils will be signposted to the new Corby Sport Awards club of the year Corby Archery Club.

Corby, Oundle and Thrapston SSP Secure Get Set to Plan Your Legacy Grant for Silver Schools Chris Long and Hazel Leys School have successfully applied for a Get Set to Plan Your Legacy Grant from the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association and the Department for Education for a girls PE project across the 10 silver level Schools. The grant of 5000 will help these schools deliver Nontraditional sports for girls via after school clubs. The sessions will include a selection of activities from street dance, cheerleading, handball and volleyball and will be delivered by specialist coaches in each of the ten schools over a five week period. This will culminate in a COTSSP Enhanced School Games, providing a positive competitive opportunity to showcase childrens learning and progress, as well as building links between the ten schools

Rockingham Primary School Family Funs

The programme was designed to deliver the following objectives: Increased activity for all children Improved fundamental movement for all children Aid social and personal skills improvement with both parents and children Provide evidence to support objectives Delivering the Project The project was co delivered through Northamptonshire Sport and a member of staff from Rockingham Primary School. The member of staff from the school attending two days of training alongside Northamptonshire Sport staff to ensure a high quality level of delivery was delivered by both activators. Project Impact Throughout the running of the club numbers gradually increased until we had 9 families regularly attending with 20 participants enjoying Family FUNS time. The targeted group of participants were KS1 pupils but the club was open to all the members of the families. The club attracted siblings, parents and grandparents along to spend some quality family time together. To improve the club going forward it is felt that better publicity of the benefits to the club and Family FUNS would attract a greater audience and uptake. The Future The school is looking to continue with a family inclusive program of work this academic year. They have used some funding to employ a member of staff half a day a week to support Change 4 Life and other Physical Activity within the school. The school has successfully in an Awards4All bid to develop health and wellbeing across the community of Rockingham Primary School. Feedback Miss Curtis, I have thoroughly enjoyed co-delivering Family FUNS, the training offered provided me with the skills to deliver this project and other Physical Activity work within Rockingham Primary Child A Family FUNS was great as I got to play with my mum at school and at home. Congratulations to Cottingham Primary School for winning the English School Small Schools Tournament. Despite only 3 eligible small school attending the tournament was a great success. Refereed by student from Corby Business Academy the results were: Cottingham 2 v Gretton 1 Cottingham 5 v Our ladys 0. Gretton 4 v Our Ladys 1

School Games Cross Country

T h e C o r b y, O u n d l e a n d T h r a p s t o n S c h o o l G a m e s C r o s s C o u n t r y Championship launched the start of the 2013/14 competitive calendar for the local schools. P h i l Wo o l l e y, S c h o o l G a m e s C o o r d i n a t o r f o r C o r b y Business Academy successfully lead and managed the event. Now in its 9th year the Key Stage 2 cross country has always been a great starting event for the year ahead. The Year 3 races run over 1000m were won by Fabien (Cottingham) and Lexi (Danesholme Juniors) with the year 6 races running over 2000m won by Jacob (Woodnewton) and Jeni (Woodnewton. Young leaders from Brooke Weston School helped lead on the event and showed some outstanding leadership skills which helped put smiles on the faces of the participants when they were crossing the finishing line.

2) The Sainsbury School GamesTo provide a range of competitive opportunities for the pupils within the SSP. Cottingham School take home School Games Tag Rugby Competition Title
Congratulation to Cottingham School for winning the COTSSP School Games Tag Rugby Competition and will now join runners up Danesholme Juniors at the County Finals in February. The Tag Rugby competition which was held at Stewart & Lloyds RFC on Thursday 24th October saw 15 primary schools from the area compete with 180 primary school children taking part. The event was the first of many which the Young Leaders from Lodge Park Academy will get the opportunity to lead on; giving them the opportunity to build on and enhance their confidence, officiating and leadership skills. Nathan Clark, a Young Leader from Lodge Park Academy said I really enjoyed refereeing today, it was a great experience. The Tag Rugby course we did gave me confidence to be able to referee and I definitely feel my leadership skills have improved. The competition was organised by Andrew Milner (Rugby Development Officer) from Lodge Park Academy, with Cottingham Primary School becoming the competition winners beating Danesholme Junior School 3-2 in the final. Both teams will now go on to compete in the Northamptonshire school games competition. Mixed Fortunes For Boys Football

The Hazel Leys Boys Football team continued their quest to qualify for the knockout stages of the Kingswood football league as, on Monday, they took part in Game week 2 at Kingswood Secondary School. The team was in buoyant mood on the walk over to Kingswood, telling each other their scores from the weekend action and talking about how many goals they are all going to score. Lying in wait this week were Studfall Juniors, King John B and Rockingham. Hazel Leys were on first on pitch 2 versus, what looked a big and strong, Studfall Juniors. The game didnt quite go to plan as, a well drilled and skillful, Studfall side ran out 4 -0 winners. The game started with a series of poor tackles that allowed Studfall to continually attack the Hazel Leys goal. Eventually the pressure told and Studfall took the lead, with a tap-in at the far post. Studfall continued to pile on the pressure and scored 3 more goals, one of which was a cracker. Hazel Leys faired much better in game 2, coming away with a 2-0 win versus King John B from Oundle. Jamie Jakes opened the account with a long range stunner from just inside the King John half. The ball dipped and swerved and left the goal-keeper with no chance. The second goal was a well worked goal by the team and was finished off by Jack Pyper, to score for the second consecutive week. Game 3 was given as a 3-0 walkover to Hazel Leys as Rockingham had not turned up. The next outing will be Game week 3 and Hazel Leys will be pitched against; King John A, St Patricks, Cottingham and Woodnewton. Star moment: Jamie Jakes long range goal. Clown moment: Kyle Anderson completely missing the ball with his left foot and falling over.

Does your School have/ need Young Sporting Ambassadors? We have linked up with the Youth Sport Trust and ordered some baseball caps and pin badges that were free for the first 40 students identified already. You can still become involved with the Young Ambassadors Movement and this could be an ideal opportunity for some of your School Sports Organising Crews members. Your Young Ambassador should fulfil the following criteria

Ideally be in Year 5 or 6. (we have adapted to year 3/4 for lower schools)
Be a talented performer and/or a committed leader and volunteer. Be a positive role model within the school.

We encourage you to be inclusive in your selection of Young Ambassadors and include young disabled people as part of the selection process. These young disabled people could be selected from special or mainstream schools. Essential requirements

Ability to influence and inspire other young people. Ability to lead and manage other young leaders. Excellent communication skills with other young people and adults. Ability to show initiative and take responsibility. Ability to portray a positive image and be a good role model to young people. Organised, with good time management skills.

As a School Sport Partnership we will look to get all of the selected Young Ambassadors together for a workshop in January 2014 to provide further training to the School Sports Crew training already being delivered.

The Sainsbury's Inclusive PE Training Course is being held in Northamptonshire through Project Ability on Thursday 28th November at Manor School Sports College from 9.30am until 3pm.

The course aims to provide the confidence, knowledge and skills to: Have a clearer understanding of the needs of all pupils. Be able to use teaching strategies to ensure all pupils are engaged and make good progress, both of which are essential in outstanding teaching. Help to embed inclusive practice in planning, delivery and assessment within the curriculum.
