History, Maintenance and Operating Equipment Res Ipsa Loquitur 1965 Columbia 50

Res Ipsa Loquitur (It Speaks for Itself) is a 1965 Columbia 50 sloop (hull number five) formerly known as Eight Girl. Res Ipsa was designed by Bill Tripp and built in Sausalito, California. Res Ipsa has been kept and maintained in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes only, except for one trip to Florida. Res Ipsa has a storied racing history. She was a winner of the Chicago Mackinac in 1966, and has been racing ever since, most recently taking a third place (among 127 boats) in the 2010 Falcon Race from Cleveland Yacht Club to Mentor Harbor Yacht Club (26.8 miles).

The hull is fiberglass with a balsa core and extensive teak trim. She is 50 feet long, 12'7" in the beam, draws 6'7" and weighs 34,000 pounds with an 8000 pound lead keel. She has an 8 foot spade rudder with a hull shaped like the Bluenose sailing ship of Nova Scotia. The boat has been maintained in a Bristol fashion and is pristine. She carries 100 gallons of water and 100 gallons of diesel fuel in Monel tanks from 1966 that have been continuously kept by the present owner. She has approximately 28 sails, 3 spinnakers, a storm spinnaker, a staysail, reacher/drifter, a roller reefing genoa, and a heavy weather genoa, a Rodney Carr staysail and three separate Dacron main sails (one recent, full luff to leach battened, built in 2010). The mainsail can be roller reefed if needed and has a sail cover. She has a hydraulic adjustable back stay. She has a recently installed roller reefed 170% genoa trim able at the cockpit and variably adjustable depending on wind conditions. She has a hydraulic chrome plated boom vang controllable from the cockpit. She has a new 51/2 foot four passenger West Marine rubber dinghy with a 2.5hp outboard. Res Ipsa has a full complement of cutting edge electronics including, two ship to shore FM radios, an AM/FM radio with CD, Cassette and MP3 player input capabilities, three pairs of speakers throughout the vessel, including on deck including a pair of Bose speakers in the main cabin. Complete laptop connectivity at the navigator chart table for computer aided plotting. The helm boasts a Raymarine Nav station with color E-Series Display (wide angle viewing even in full sunlight). The Nav station connects to a 48 mile radar with bottom scanning ship positioning, waypoint plotting navigational and tracking capabilities and 2d and 3d chart imaging. The Nav station comes with a full complement of Great Lakes Charts including many extras. There are depth sounders, two electronic speed meters, wind speed and directional indicators, with meters mounted at the navigators chart table and at the helm. She has forward-scanning separate sonar with fish finder and speed meter. There are appropriate navigating tools, a pylorus, sextant, two barometers and chiming ships clock. There is a strobe unit, and additional duplicated navigational lights on top of the mast, as well as running lights in the vessel. There are two spreader spotlighted deck lights and a steaming light above the spreaders. The helm has a large, 5 foot destroyer wheel with white rope windings and Turks head woven knots. The helm has a 5 inch floating gimbaled compass. The vessel is powered with a 75 hp Volvo Penta diesel engine mounted on rubber shock absorbers on stringers in the bilge, with a 65 amp alternator/generator. The main battery bank consists of two 1385 amp truck batteries, and the auxiliary back up battery consists of one 1385 amp truck battery. All batteries are hooked up with appropriate sized cabling to the heavy-duty Marine battery charger, and to a 30 amp shore power connection with 100 ft. cables.

There is a dual action electric anchor windlass with an approximately 200 ft. of chain, mounted anchor storing in the Bow and the electric, remotely controllable anchor windlass can be used for a winch, raising and lowering the sails and/or storing the dinghy with an extra stainless steel halyard, mounted through a halyard block on top of the mast for assistance when needed. She has a self-bailing cockpit and is rigged for ocean sailing in accordance with the standards set out by the Offshore Yacht Racing Association. The vessel has a full complement of life preservers, as well as horseshoe life preservers and man overboard equipment plus a guest man overboard strobe. She has 1 copper grounding cables from the chain plates to the engine radio ground and keel for lightning and electrolysis prevention.

Maintenance and Equipment added in 2009 and 2010 Installed a brand-new Westerbeke, 7.5 kW diesel generator with soundproofing, selfstarter and remote control, with an independent battery, and appropriate remote switching. Installed a 16,000 BTU air conditioning/heating unit connected to the generator and powered by diesel fuel, working either from shore power, or while underway with the generator. There is appropriate insulating and sheathing with air-conditioning and heating vents throughout the boat making it a truly comfortable, year-round vessel. Installed a bow thruster, mounted in a 10 inch diameter fiberglass tube with appropriate attachments, heavy wiring and remote control capabilities at the helm. The bow thruster has a rating of 176 pounds of thrust with a separate gel battery with 1375 amps of cranking power. Completely overhauled the pressure water system with automated pressure, shore power connection, hot and cold pressure water throughout the vessel including the galley, as well as in the enclosed shower stall trimmed in teak. The water system is hooked up to an electric hot water tank, as well as to the engine for hot water heating, when underway. There is a sea water intake pressure water system with electric pump for deck cleaning and washing the anchor chain when needed. Installed privacy drapes in the main cabin and for the forward V births with newly curtained windows in the main cabin. Also, includes a macerator power operated head and shower starboard. Installed custom-made full deck canvas awnings with large plastic viewable panels and a fully continuous Bimini above the helm mounted on 1 inch chrome folding and collapsible supports with a convertible downsizing capability.
