Theinterestinraisingsmallflocksisnotlimitedtoruralsettings.MDARsDivisionofAnimalHealth hasreceivedrequestsforinformationfrombothresidentsandofficialsofsuburbanandurban areasalike.Beforegettingstarted,makesuretocheckwithlocalcityortownofficialsabout complyingwithalllocalbylaws,ordinances,orpermitrequirements.

OBTAINBIRDSFROMAREPUTABLESOURCE
ThesourceofanybirdsorhatchingeggsmustbefromaSalmonellapullorumtestedflock.TheSalmonellapullorumtest isconductedonanannualbasis,andisintendedtodetectthepresenceofthispotentiallyharmfulbacteriumthatis knowntoaffectpoultryandtheeggstheyproduce.Theownersofalltestedflocksareissuedcertificationoftheirclean statusbyMDAR.Youshouldreceiveacopyofthiscertificationwithanybirdsyoupurchase.Shouldyoueverfind yourselfactingasasourceofbirdsforotherpeople,yourflockwillneedtobetestedpriortomovinganypoultry.The testingisperformedonallbirdsover16weeksofage,andisprovidedbyMDARatnocost.Oncetheflockhasbeen certifiedpullorumtyphoidclean,youwillbefreetotransferownershiptoothersaslongasthebirdsareaccompanied byacopyofthetestingcertificate. PROVIDEANDMAINTAINADEQUATEHOUSINGFORPOULTRY
