Title I Information
Why reread books? The more a child reads a book again the better he/she will be at reading. The more a child sees and reads a book the more likely the child is going to recognize the words that were at first unfamiliar and the more confident your child will feel about reading. The more one practices something, the better one gets at doing it. One needs to practice over and over again how to tie shoes or how to ride a bicycle. The same thing is true with reading. The more a child reads the better that child gets at reading. If a child doesnt practice especially at home they will continue to struggle. Make the time you spend listening to your child read a fun time and a special time with you. Acting out the story together can make it a fun time. Hopefully, during these times your child will find a joy in reading and will find a favorite type of book they like to read and will eventually just want to read on their own for fun. Then we will have all succeeded in our mission to make all children life long readers! Family Science Night is Tuesday Nov. 19th 5:30-7:30. Family Science Night on Tues. Nov. 19 Keep this date in mind, we will be having a Family Science Night on Tues. Nov. 19 from 5:30-7:30.

Right to Know
Notice of Right to Know Teacher Qualifications Parents/Guardians have the right to know about the teaching qualifications of their childs classroom teacher in a school receiving Title I funds. Longfellow Elementary, Riley Elementary, and Fostoria Intermediate Elementary receive Title I funds. The federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires that any local school district receiving Title I funds must notify parents that they may ask about the professional qualifications of their childs classroom teacher. These qualifications include: 1. Whether the teacher has met the Ohio teacher licensing criteria for the grade level and subject areas in which the teacher provides your child instruction. 2. Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or temporary status that waives state licensing requirements. 3. The undergraduate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate degree or certification (such as National Board Certification) held by the teacher and the field of discipline of certification or degree 4. Whether your child is provided services by instructional paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications. Parents should contact the school offices for this information.

For the month of October, our character word we learned about was Respect. We learned that Respectful students look for the good things their friends are doing instead of looking for the bad things to tattle on. Ask anyone who works with young children to name the problem they struggle with the most, and more often than not, tattling tops the list. In order for tattling to not turn into a habit, children must develop the ability to discern between a situation that can be taken care of independently versus an urgent, more serious situation that calls for adult assistance. To help students discover alternatives to tattling, we read a story titled, A BAD CASE OF THE TATTLE TONGUE and learned the rules to tattling. We also played the game Pin the Face on the Tattletale to practice the rules. Here are the rules we are trying to follow

To continue reinforcing the Rules to Tattling from last year, we read the storybook Dont Squeal Unless Its a Big Deal. I like this story because it seems pretty simple for the students to understand there are problems that are truly kid sized that they could try to solve on their own first and then there are problems that are a Big Deal from the very beginning that require help from an adult. The story really encourages the reader to be a problem solver before telling an adult about it. It also breaks the situations down that are considered an emergency such as someone is hurt, someone is hurting them, someone is hurting animals/pets, destroying property, etc. These are situations that our students are encouraged to come for help right away. To help them further distinguish between kid sized and big deal problems, we played an activity with situation cards and asked them to identify which of the two. Both the teachers and the students really enjoyed the story as well as the activity. You can reinforce these concepts at home by using the same language with your child if you are finding that tattling is a problem amongst your children.

If a person or animal is in danger, you must warn someone.

If the problem involves you, take charge and try hard to solve it yourself first.

Is the problem a Now problem or a Not Now problem? Can your problem be solved at a later time?

If the problem is not dangerous and is does not involve you.

DO NOT TATTLE

I hope you have enjoyed reading and doing the activities from the first Chapter of My Wonderful PAX School with your child. For the month of October we focused on Chapter 1. If your child completed Chapter 1 and returned it to his/her teacher, they received 100 PAX minutes to add to their class total. So GREAT job! Starting in November, your child will once again be bringing his/her book home to begin working on Chapter 2. I love the enthusiasm our students are putting into PAX!

Respect is a basic building block for all other character lessons. When students respect themselves and others their behavior and attitude make it easier for them to display all the other positive character traits. These students display this character trait on a daily basis and are great role models for all of us. Great job Riley students!
