Job Title: Voluntary Horticulture Training Assistant Walkways Programme

Background:
An exciting opportunity to be a key part of an innovative social enterprise. Walkways is a Groundwork project with a particular focus on working with young people, either those who are at risk of becoming

NEET or those who are currently NEET. We work with local schools throughout south Yorkshire, offering them the benefit of our schools re-engagement services. The re-engagement programme is a structured training course designed for young people who want to develop skills in the Horticulture or Construction fields. Much of our training is accredited by City in Guilds

Purpose of the job


The Voluntary Horticulture Assistant will work to assist the Walkways Team Leader to deliver a variety of Horticulture training for young people. Much of the work will be delivered on our various allotment sites, as listed below. Your work will primarily involved engaging young people in delivering a range of practical Horticulture activities. This could include: Preparing grounds for planting, Weeding, Sewing Seeds, Pruning, Harvesting fruit and vegetables, fertilisation, making raised beds, erecting fences, laying paving & preparing gravel paths etc.

Specific duties and responsibilities:


To assist the Walkways Team Leaders to organise and deliver Schools Re-engagement programmes; helping to deliver tasks in accordance with the clients requirements. Assist in the management and maintenance of the tool store, vehicle, tools and equipment. Work with the Walkways Team Leader to support the delivery of volunteer days and team building days. Be vigilant when working out on site and addressed. to identify issues which need to be reported and

Assist the Walkways Team Leader in maintaining health & safety and Safeguarding standards and records. Represent the Groundwork as required.

Desirable skills and knowledge

Candidates should be able to demonstrate: A basic understanding of and interest in all aspects of Horticulture A basic understanding of basic hard landscaping and fencing Experience of using hand and power tools associated with horticulture and hard landscaping Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with businesses, fellow volunteers and young participants. Previous experience of working with young people, particularly in a teaching capacity Flexibility, confidence and energy, evidence of self-motivation and the ability to work well on their own initiative and as part of a team. An appreciation of and commitment to equal opportunities issues. Experience and understanding of health and safety issues including production and use of risk assessments. A commitment to personal and professional development of self and others.

Training budget to include, as a minimum, First Aid at Work, Safeguarding and Health & Safety at Work.
