his year we mark an event we will not experience for another 70,000 years: Chanukah and Thanksgiving celebrated together. This gives us the opportunity to recognize an integral connection between these two special holidays. While Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to express profound appreciation for all of our blessings, Chanukah provides us the chance to realize that we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors. We are so grateful to the ancient Maccabees and their ability to confront the oppression and cruelty perpetuated by King Antiochus and the Syrian-Greeks in the year 165 BCE. Fighting against foreign domination, a band of Jews led by Mattathias took to the hills of Judea in revolt against the Seleucid empire. Antiochus sent thousands of well-prepared and heavily armed troops to the Land of Israel to crush the rebellion. Mattathias son Judah, along with his followers, drove the Syrian-Greeks from their land, and most importantly, from the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Then, upon the rededication of the Temple, the chieftains of the twelve tribes brought gifts to express gratitude to God. In the same spirit our forbearers illustrated, it is appropriate at this season to oer thanks to God for our peoples mirac-
ulous deliverance, for the heroism, and for the battle victory of our ancestors who were defending their beliefs and their religion for all time. This is the reason that Chanukah cannot be merely about receiving presents, but about giving of ourselves to others. It has been a longstanding custom in our family to write a tzedakah check each night to a dierent organization immediately following our lighting of the Chanukiyah. This act serves to remind us that Chanukah is not merely about receiving gifts, but even more, it is about sincerely expressing our personal and familial gratitude for each of our blessings. During this holiday of lights, I pray that each of us brings increased light into the world by making a strong statement that giving charity is not optional: it is an obligation! Of course, not only should we give money, but whenever possible, we should give our time. Assisting worthwhile community organizations that rely on volunteers is truly priceless, for in so doing, we involve ourselves in the global responsibility of Tikkun Olam healing the world. Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and a Chanukah of appreciation and gratitude from our home to yours!
he days are short and the nights are long, but this is the season of light. Of course, we celebrate this yearas some are calling itThanksgivukkah: one of the rare times in history when Chanukah and Thanksgiving coincide. So this year, more than any other year, Chanukah falls when the nights are at their absolute longest. With great celebration each of us will light our Chanukiyah (Chanukah menorahs), and bring light into the darkness. We will then fulll the Chanukah mitzvah of pirsumei nisa, publicly proclaiming Gods miracles by displaying the lights of the Chanukiyah in our windows for all to see. This is the holiday we Jews are commanded, quite literally, to bring light into the world. In truth, however, we are at all times commanded to bring light into the world. Speaking for God, the prophet Isaiah informs us, It is insucient that you be a servant for Me [only] I will make you a light for the nations (or lagoyim), so that My salvation may extend
to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). God has brought the Jewish people into this world, and blessed us with immeasurable blessings, that we might represent and testify to Gods greatness by our actions. More specically, God demands that we go out into the world to care for those in need and to right the injustices that exist. We are, in word and deed, to teach and bring justice and righteousness to all the nations of the world. Like the Chanukiyah in the window, the Jewish people must bring light into the world. We live in dark times. The weather is cold, the nights are long, and those who suer do so the most at this time of year. And, in addition to the physical suering, there are those who suer spiritually. May this season of light encourage us to deepen our commitment to bringing light. This year, especially, Congregation Shaarey Zedek is oering a variety of opportunities to fulll this important mitzvah. I look forward to joining you in these holy pursuits. Rebecca, Caleb, Ayal and I wish you and your family a very happy Chanukah.

CSZ Sisterhood Torah Fund supporters recently gathered at the home of Susie Harold for an afternoon of biblical discussion led by Rabbi Michele Faudem. While Rabbi Faudem fed their souls, Annabel Cohen fed their bodies with a wonderful lunch in her signature style. This Sisterhood event raised more than $10,000 for Torah Fund, which supports scholarships, housing and special programs at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies and the Schecter Institute of Jewish Studies. Many thanks to Susie Harold for opening her home to us, and to all who attended our wonderful afternoon event in support of Sisterhood and Torah Fund.

Darrien is one of three young adults who are working in Metro Detroit for the National Ramah Commission. Darrien is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, has spent several summers at Camp Ramah in Canada as both a camper and as a madricha. She worked with campers in the Tikvah program, mentored an 11 year-old blind camper, and worked with younger edot (villages). Darrien is excited to become more involved in the community and have a presence at Shaarey Zedek. Among other programs, Darrien will be one of the leaders of our Shabbat 4 Kidz experience.

f all the Torah texts that I have learned over the years, one of my favorites, and a relatively obscure one, comes from the classical Midrash on the Book of Proverbs: Rabbi Levi said, Whoever thinks to himself before going to sleep at night, When I wake up tomorrow, I will do good things... That person will ultimately share great joy with the Good People in the Future, the Next World. As the verse states ...there is joy for people who make plans to do good. (Prov. 12:1) Our Jewish heritage teaches us that it is our sacred responsibility to repair the world. We are excited that on Sunday, November 10, Congregation Shaarey Zedek will once again be hosting Fall Fix Up in partnership with Jewish Family Service. Fall
Mazel Tov!
Fix Up is an annual program serving homebound older adults in need of outdoor cleanup to prepare for the winter months. Fall Fix Up will enable all of us, from kindergartners to adults, to participate in the holy task of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) where we will have the opportunity to not only experience the power and value of our personal contributions, but also engage with our Synagogue community. Our entire kindergarten through seventh grade learning community will break from their traditional classes in order to lead our congregation in this important work. We hope you will join us; it is not too late to sign up and participate. For more information, contact Allison Gutman at 248.357.5544 or agutman@shaareyzedek.org.

s the High Holidays end and fall begins, I look forward to creating and implementing programming to engage our youth and young adults. Whether its going to Zap Zone and playing laser tag with our third through sixth grade youth group, building robots with our sixth through eighth grade students at The Robot Garage, or going on regional conventions with MCUSY, our local USY chapter, we are rolling out events that will serve to strengthen our community. Our goal is to educate, spiritually engage and facilitate connections among the next generation of Conservative Jewish leaders. When it comes to our young adults, we are forming a young adult committee tasked with executing a three-pronged programming vision that consists
of social, religious and community service activities. In addition, I am very excited about our new Carlebach Shabbat service which we hope will foster the growth of our spiritual community here at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. The first of these monthly services took place in October. The energy was invigorating and the feedback has been exceptionally encouraging for the future. Upcoming services are scheduled for November 8 and December 13. But is it Kosher? A Discussion of Kashrut in the 21st Century with Rabbi Joseph Krakoff and Rabbi Aaron Starr
The Torah outlines the most basic laws of the Jewish diet, but kashrut in the 21st Century is much more comprehensive than the Torahs statutes. How? Why? Join us as we analyze the complex system of kashrut, its origin and modern implications, as well as the complex world of hekshers, ethical kashrut, and other modern intricacies of the ancient dietary laws. 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 6 weeks: Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 Tuition: $90
Jewish Men, Jewish Women: Gender Roles through the Ages with Rabbi Aaron Starr
Gender roles in Judaism have evolved significantly since the days of the Torah, and often remain a point of contention today. What does Judaism teach us about the role of men and women in Judaism? What does it mean to be a Jewish man? A Jewish woman? How do we understand traditional permissions and prohibitions when it comes to men and women in Judaism? 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 8 weeks: Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27, Apr. 3, 24, May 1, May 8 Tuition: $115
