About The Painting That Hangs Above Our Baptistry

You may not be aware, but the beautiful backdrop to our baptistry is a 65-year-old, handpainted canvas painting. It was created by Blanche Garrett Perry in 1949, and is one of about 240 canvas paintings created by Blanche Perry for churches throughout the United States, Canada, Panama, and the Philippines. Our baptistry painting was the 118th work completed by Mrs. Perry. Blanche Garrett was born in 1890 in Carmel, Alabama. She died in 1981 in Denver, Colorado. She married Andrew Perry in 1913. In 1924 she contracted tuberculosis and became deathly ill. Her husband took her to a sanitarium in Denver, Colorado, where she remained for 10 years, ulti-

mately recovering her health. In the sanitarium, she took up a childhood hobby of painting, and when she recovered her health, she devoted herself to painting backdrops for church baptistries. This activity began in 1937 and continued until about 1960. At her peak years in the 1940s, she was producing several paintings a month and sending them to churches all over the country. Blanche Perry donated these paintings, and only accepted reimbursements for the coast of her materials. She sometimes traveled to the church to paint on the baptistry wall, but more often she prepared a large canvas in her Denver studio and then shipped it to the church, requesting that the church return photos of the painting installed in the building. She also asked for photos of the exterior of the building, of the minister and his family, and of the new painting in its new home. With the painting, Mrs. Perry sent a two-to-three-page typed interpretation of the painting explaining its symbolic features. The painting that graces our building was originally given for display in the Gallup Church of Christ building that was located on Hill Street. It was moved here when this building was built in the 1950s.

David Atchison is recovering from surgery to remove spots on his kidney.

Norman Atchison has had a bronchial infection. He has improved. Jimi Christian and Mason Quam have been sick with respiratory infections this past week. Gina Houghtaling will be prepped with a PICC line for chemotherapy on November 5. Chemotherapy will begin on November 6 and continue 4-6 months. Kristin John had surgery to remove her gall bladder, on Thursday. Leora Jones is recovering from surgery. Ted Kingery, father of Annette Roehr, is recovering from two procedures that implanted arterial stints. Colin Graham has sent an email report about his work in Ireland. His family and the congregation have been busy and many good things are happening. He and Lisa were able to visit the United States in August, where they attended the Polishing the Pulpit workshop and made several visits to congregations to raise funds. After losing a lot of support earlier in the year, the Grahams have been able to recruit new support to make up their deficit. Colins email address is irishpreacher@live.co.uk. Encourage the Grahams with notes and prayers.
