ESSAY QUESTIONS: 25 Points each; 75 total 6 will appear on the final. select 3 of them and answer them with well-argued and supported essays. 1) In his guest lecture professor Lynch presented a clear argument (much, though not all, of which was similar to that laid out in the chapter we read by Shirley Rigger) explaining why many Taiwanese believe their island has a history and political identity quite distinct from that of mainland China. Present the main points of argument (this should be the bulk of your essay). Then, in a paragraph or two present what you think the strongest arguments are for the idea that Taiwan should be part of China (you can also think of this as a paragraph rebutting the first part of your essay). Finally, conclude with your personal evaluation of the Taiwan issue. Summarize Professor Lynchs argument

Easy to start chronologically: Taiwans history Historically: Austronesians, not inhabitated by Han- not until early 1600s Piracy, fishing, smuggling Dutch 1600s- making settlements Prefecture: not even a province IN Chinese government: Central, province, prefecture therefore not very big part of Qing dynasty Didnt really pay attention with Taiwan Later on: Ryukyu incident o Landed on eastern coast of Taiwan o problem: Qing has no control over Taiwan- some settlements on the west, but not the east; not even on the map o Japanese said you killed a bunch of Ryukyus well if you dont take responsibility then Taiwan isnt yours and we will take over it o Forces Ryukyus to be Japanese and Taiwan to be part of Qing 1885: finally part of province argument: never really part of China; when Japanese came, they gave it away only with Qing- for a little bit 1895-1945: colony of Japan o Japan helps Taiwan develop economically o Dont experience tension with Japan as China did o Immersed in Japanese culture Japanese writing; speaking Post 45: Taiwan given back to China- Japanese rule falls Nationalists take over Taiwan o Arrive with some military, not manyo Think Taiwanese people are brainwashed by Japanese ppl o Think of them as traitors

Local uprising: 1947: nationalist government crack down on local people- to end riots and became a systematic attack on Taiwanese educated elites anyone with education over 6 grade were seen as dangerous Then on: go into Martial law- until the 1980s 1949: Kuo Ming Tang- move to Taiwan then on, under KMT rule thugh DPP have won elections, have not ever come out say Taiwan is independent b/c lot of threat from China

Against Argument 6 million ppl on Taiwan- of the 6 million, 5.5 million are ethnically Chinese Fujian, Guangdong 2) You are at a holiday party with your parents friends and one of them asks you what classes you took at USC this fall. When you mention this class she says, Yes, yes. Well you know, Im a policy analyst specializing in Asia and its quite evident that Chinas rise is destabilizing for the region and that China is increasingly becoming a threat to its neighbors and to US interests. As Robert Kaplan noted, Secretary of State Hilary Clintons rejection of balance-of-power politics as a relic of the past is either disingenuous or misguided. There is an arms race going on in Asia. We ignore these realities fact at our peril and at the peril of our others in Asia You respond 3) China is facing a slew of environmental crises and is regularly subject to human-induced ecological disasters (some quite localized, some of great geographic scope) as well. Write an essay summing up Chinas biggest environmental challenges. While doing so make sure to try to explain the root causes of these problems. Conclude by discussing what kinds of steps the Chinese government and/or public are taking to address these problems. Do you think these steps are going to be successful? Why? 4) Write an essay evaluating the role the last 30 years of economic globalization has played in China. You can focus on whatever combination of issues you like, positive or negative factors, etc., Just make sure you have a clear thesis statement (underline it so we know exactly where it is) and at least 3 evidence-supported arguments su1845-bstantiating your claim. Conclude by discussing one or two big challenges facing China today and how you think these should affect Chinas policies in regard to globalization. 5) China has been pretty involved in Africa since that 1950s. Write an essay describing how that involvement has evolved over the last 60 years. What continuities have there been between the internationally- say Taiwan is part of China

Mao era and the present? What changes? How do you explain these continuities and changes? 6) For the sake of argument, lets say that Chinas activities in Africa over the last decade or so substantiate the idea that there is a Chinese model of development. Explain how Chinas engagement in Africa demonstrates how this model works. In what ways does Chinese partnership/aid in African differ from Western (US, World Bank etc.) engagement? How are the forms of Chinas aid reflective of or extensions of the political-economic organization of China itself? What is your evaluation of Chinas engagement in Africa? Is it better than US/Western involvement? Do the differences matter? 7) One of Mao Zedongs famous adages (and political threats) was Never forget class struggle! Indeed, he purged Liu Shaoqi (who died in isolation in 1969) and Deng Xiaoping (who spent most of the Cultural Revolution on farms in the countryside) from their posts because he suspected they often DID forget class struggle. Write an essay in which, looking at the last 30 years of reform, you explain 1) whether Mao was actually right all along and 2) you argue with clarity precisely why and how Mao was right; or why and how he was wrong; or present otherwise clearly how he was right in some regards and wrong in others.

8) China is facing a host of acute problems right now. These include: Government corruption ethnic(?) etc) Various kinds of inequality (economic, regional,

Structural socio- economic problems (there are several, please specify) Several difficulties in international relations (specify) specify) Tensions regarding various rights (specify) Environmental crises (again, please

ADD YOUR OWN PROBLEM HERE ()

Write an essay where you pick any 3 of the above listed problem areas (in almost all cases specifying a bit more clearly what the acute problem is) and argue one of these positions: The current major problems China faces today are mainly the result of the policies and changes of the last 30 years of reform and opening OR The current major problems China faces today are mainly have their roots in issues rooted in history, dating to the Mao era or often much earlier. 9) Much of what we have read and studied over the semester has been based on ideas about how economic development happens. We often take for granted that a nations development involves moving through a serious of stages from less developed to developing to developed. Keeping these stages in mind, write an essay about US trade/investment relations to China and Chinas

trade/investment relations to Africa comparing these relationships to one another. You certainly should also put these issues into some historical context, but focus on the last 30 years. How do US-China trade/econ relations differ from China-Africa in this regard? How are they similar? Are they all connected together in one larger process of global (uneven?) development? Or not? 10) You have spent the semester analyzing a country within a region in your section. Write an essay comparing your findings about your country and region of specialization with the findings about Africa (from Aldens book, the film When China Met Africa, and class lecture). Explain the key differences, similarities, overlaps, contradictions, etc. 11) Your incoherent professor made an argument at the end of one class that Chinas problems domestically were pretty much the same as Chinas problems internationally (in foreign relations). Write a well-supported essay trying to make that statement makes sense. And in the end evaluate whether you think it really is accurate, or misses the point.
