4-Operating Instmctions

4- 1 Installation Your mobile transceiver has been engineered to provide high level of performance and reIiability. These qualities axe inherent and will be FeaEized if reasonable concern is given to proper installation and opemtion. 4-1-1. Mobileuse 1) Determine where the transceiver is to be installd. Choose a location which considers accessibilityand safety. The microphone and operator controls should be within easy reach. Try to avoid such locations as the radio is exposed to direct wn rays o r to the air conditioner. 2) Connect first the DC power cable furnished with the radio set to the car battery*Then apply

the DC power mble to the radio set.

The in-line fuse will blow when the mble is reversely connected.
Double check the polarity and repeat above procedure and then replace the fuse.

3)When the DC source is made from the fuse-box, it occasionallypicks up the noise, that direct connection to the battery is recommended.
4)Antenna

Best location for the antenna is on the vehicle top roof. Antenna mble must be securely connected to the antenna connectorlomted on the rear of the mdio set. Poor connection will result in degmdmg the communication range.

7-Circuit descriptions
7- 1.PLL 1)Reference Oscillator & Fxequency Contdler IC9 (TXl 824G) is a TCXO ( Temperature CompensatedXtal Oscillator), generating very high sfability RF signal of 12.8MHz &th accuracybf f3ppm over the operating temperature of -20 CO +60C. This signaI divides by 1024 at the internal divider of lC8 (TC9 18 l P ) , bringing up 1 2 . 5 m reference frequency. ( 12.5KfIz Ret division ratio 1024 for 12.5 & 25KHz spacing.) ( l OKHz Ref. division ratio 1280 for 20/30KHkspacing.
\

Another signal output from VC0 ,goes into IClO(MB503) prescaler and then into the the programmable divider of the 1C8 for divisions, then proceed to the Fkse comparator in the IC8. At the phase comparator, the reference f w e n c y and signal from the VC0 are compared to produce (+) or (-1 puf ses according to the phase comparison results.

The division ratio of progmmmabEe divider at ICS is detetmined by the serial data (binary code) Followings are the data inputs #E 0 (DATA) input Division Ratio #9 (CK)input clock signal # 11(STB) strobe signal input to latch data

2)Frequency Programming A11 the Chmd information, including channel numbers, designation of 'IXJRX, and frequencies are to be progmmmed and stored i n the IC7 EPROM ( E m b I e Programmable Read
Only Memory). Those channel information are made in &e form of division ratio.

3)Channel Display Channel selection switch SW704 i s a 4 bit binary switch, providing 0 - 15 in the binary format. IC13 (TC74HC283P) is a 4 bit full adder. Added results of each bits are given as C output and digit-up signal is given on the pi*9 (C41 Switching transistor Q29 (2SC2458GR) receive Digit-up signal (from MSB of Channel switch) and apply them to the #2 and #l5 pins of IC 13.
IC13 transforms the data of 0 - 15 into 1 - 16 of 5 bits output. Switching transistor Q30(2SC2458GR)receives the signal of 5th bit from the pin #9 (C4and activates the 2nd digit (MSD)of channeI LED 1 (GL7N208). K14 (MB74LS47) is a decodeddriver to drive 7 segments LED with 4bit BCD input. This controls the l st digit (LSD) of the channel LEDs.

4)Luop Filter The output from IC8 phase-comparatorgoes through the Active filter (Q 12,Q 13 2SC2458GR x2) and RC Low pass filter then goes into the VCO. Very critical circuit and the time constancy of this filter stage largdy affects the PLL Iock-up time and modulation response.

5)Prescaler VC0 output mes twice for the divisions, firstby and another - prescaler at ICE0 (MB503) dividing process at IC8 thereafter. This prescaIer X C l0 conducts Dud modutars prescaling by first switching the two division ratios of M & M+1 per 168 demand, then Dual modulas prescaling with thl two internal dividers N/A of lC8 for eventual aquisition of the division ratio of NM+A. 6)VCO Two independent oscillators are used in this VC0 stage. Q50 I(2SC3356) is receiverVC0 and QS03(2SC3356) is for transmitter VCO. Diodes D501,502(1 SV64X2) a t TX and D505,5065(1SV64x2) a t RX are variable capacitance diode, forming a Voltage Controlled Osciflator. AT RX mode,Q501 gets on while Q503 stays o f f . When PTT is pressed, FIT line activates Q502 and make Q503 comes on to stop Q50 1 o f f .( no oscillation)

7)Power source All logic ICs in the PLL and Channel display stages are fed with 5V power supply, regulated by the IC5 (TA78L005P). IC 4(TA78008P) supplies 8V regulated power to the VC0 and the adjacent circuits.

7-2 Receiver

I)= amplifiers and RF filters

~RFcoilsRT10l-RTlOSfms5stagesLC~nk~t;~~ - - -This filter contributes to the elimination of unwqted signals,-aswell as effective attenuation of
the spurious radiation from the l st IF Oscifiator.

RF signal from the aefial goes through Antenna switching relay RLYI(KG IT-12V) & RE filters to reach Q l (3SK73GR) for RI:amplification. This Q l 3SH73GR i s low noise dual-gate FET.

2) I st Mixer circuit The signal amplified by Q 1 above, now goes into Q2 (3SK121GR) for heterodyne with the 1st local Oscillator. The signal new has been conveHed to 20.8MH2,the 1st IF frequency. Q2 (3% L 2 1GR)is Ga-as MES type field effect m i s t o r , and has excellent pexfomances at lntermodulation and low noise figures.
*

3) 1st Local OsciIlator Circuit The 1st Local Osc. signal, which has been generated in IC1 J. PLL VCO,goes into Q3 (25C2498) for ampIification, via Q 15 (2SC2.198) buffer. The butput from Q3 is purified by the 2 pole U C filters then goes into the mixer iircuit Q2

(3SK12 1GR).
4) 1st IF amplifier

The I st I F signal 20.8MHi came out right from the l st Mixer, goes into the C m filter (FE1 & FXL2) for fdtering and for the attenuation of unwanted signals. Then the signal gets amplified in the Q4(2SC2458GR)and proceed to the 2nd Mixer stage.
'

5)Znd Mixer circuit and 2nd J F amplifier The signal amplified by Q4 abve, now goes into the ICI (NJM3359D) through its pin #IS. I C 1 (NJM3359D) has the functions of 2nd local OSC.,2nd IF Mixer,Limiter,Disc\riminator, Noise Amp, Squelch switching, all integrated into this one piece K,

The signal which went into the IC1 through #18 ,now comes out from pin #3 as the cowexted 455IM[z 2nd IF signal after 2nd frequency hetemdyne ( X 1,20.345MHz)within the K 1..
Then the signal goes into the FIL3 (CFV455G) for fuaher purification of the signal. The signal after the HL3 goes into the ZC1 through pin #5 for 2nd E amplification as well as elimination of the unwanted AM factor. 6)Disctiminator The signal of 2nd W 455N-Utrimmed in above 5 ) now goes into quadrature discriminator in X C I ,for converting the signal to audio level . The signal, converted into audio level now comes out on the pin #I 0 of I C1. IF coil RT I 10 -455) is an quardracture detector-coil and its attached resistor R126 is responsible for the sensitivity of the detector circuit.

7)Mamplifier AF level signal came out of pin #10 of IC1 now goes into a De-emphasis circuit consisting of RI30 (1 8 X l ) & Cf 5 l(0.033uF) for GdWoct curve. Then the signal moves into the IC2 (L;BH-0 1) IC2 has functions of low Pass filter and AIF amplifier, of which LPF function cuts off the signal above 4 . 5 m by 18dBhct and its AX; amp. has the squdch function included.

The signal, now goes to TC3 (TA7222AP)for final AF amplification via switching transistor Q7(2SK184Y) and AF volume VRZ (l O K i l A curve).
This IC3 amplifies the signal to the maximum 3W ( S i l l at the speaker-

8)Noise Squelch C h i t The noise signal which was detected out on the pin#10 ofICl (NJM3359D), goes into the pin #l 2 of the same IC J. for its inverting Op. amplificatioa This inverting amplifierserves as active Band Pass Filter of approximately 1 5 for noise amplification with the following parts as impedance elements. RI3 9 (6.8kS1) R140(2 -2KSZ) R14 1(330WZ),Cl 64(47UpF) C165(47OpF). The amplified noise signal come our from pin #l3 ofTC1 and go into rectifying diodes (IS1588 x 2) for rectification. Thw the signal goes through R 1 4 2 ( 4 . 7 l d l ] and SqmIch mm1volume VRl(10lW B curve) to reach squelch switching circuit of the ZCI Pin #l4 and switches the atput pin #E6 of IC. The pin #16 is NPN Open Collector output. When no advity on the channel, pin#I 4 of 1C2 moves above 0 . W and pin #16 is ground. This makes switching transistor Q7(2SK184Y) off and shut the AF signal off from the i'C4 (TA7222AP)
9)Mute switching circllit Mute switch Q9 (2SC2458GR) become off during mission and apply 13V to the piu#& of the IC3 (TA7222AP). This stops ampIificati011 of IC3.
10) BUSY LED

LED 3 (SEL1923D)will not emit when no audio-signal is present , as pin # 16 ofICl is grounded and Q8 (2SC2458GR) stays off. When signal comes in, Q8 gets activated and LED 3 Eights up yellow.

1l )Regulated Voltage circuit and DC Power line filter

IC4(TA7 8008Q)feeds the regulated power of W to all circuit stages except foAhe IC3 and Q9ICI (NJM3359D)is fed with the SV during receiving, but is cut duringtransmission as Base of Q5 gets grounded via D 1 0 1 (1 S 1588) when PIT is depmed. 13.8V DC will besupplied to 1C3 and switching Q9 after the noise filtering circuit
CH4,C35Y3C3 60.

7-3 TransmiEter 1) Amplifier The RF signal which has been generated in the synthesizerunit, goes into Q 16 (2SC26680)for bufferingand proceed to Q 17 12SC2347) for .the first amplifimtionand to Q 18 (2SC2347) and Q T 9 (2SC2538) for further amplification. Those stages b m t s the signal to about 300mW of

W signal.

2 ) b t e r stage

Q20 (2SC3020) and Q21(25C2630) forms a W 'boosting amplifier, to bring the 300mw signal from the preceding stage,up to the rated p e r output of the transmitter.

3) TX'W fitters L 14 through L16 and C344 through C347 forms the Low Pass Filter to effectively eliminate the spurious factors in the TX RF signal. The signal then goes into the antenna relay circuit.
4) Antenna relay circuit

This radio set employes a RF relay for switching of the antenna for TX and RX. RF relay is optimum device for RF switching as it has almost no circuit loss. Q28 (ZSAIOISY) stays OFF during RX, feeding no voltage to the Antam ,refayRLY1 (RF1T-12V) that the antenna is connected to RX stage. When ITIT is depmsed for TX mode, Press line is grounded, bringing Q2 1 into ON to apply 13V to the rehy, which switches the contact to TX stage.

5)APC.circuit ( Automatic Power Control) This circuit detects TX power signal and feed it back to TX exciter amplifier Q 19 through control circuit Q25 - Q27 to maintain TX power constant rqadIess of fluctuation of DC supply power source.

7)Press control M e n PIT is depressed, Press-lie gets grounded with activatingQ24 (2SAlO1SY) to start feeding DC source to each txansistorsand TX L.E.D emits. However, no TX power will1 be produced when the PLL is not locked because the Q23 (2SC2458GR)is ofF. Q23 is controlld by the unlock detection pin of IC8.

8-Programming Procedures
8- 1 .General This radio set employs TC9 181f a PLL F ~ g u m c y synthesizer .It's programmable divider is set by the external data input in serial data format. EPROM 27C64 is used to store such external data information which consists of CH,channel Frequencies of TX & RX in the form o f division ratio.

1)Reference Frequency Reference Frequency for the PLL must be m integral number to the relevant operating frequency. For the 12.5 / 25KHz spacing channel allocation, the Reference frequency is set at 12.5, which is obtained by the division of 12.8MFh TCXO output bv 1024 in the built-in divider of TC9181P. Formula 1 2 . 8 m + 0.0 l 2 5 m = 1024
for 12.5KfW25KHz spacing

For the 2 Q l 3 0 K E channel spacing scheme, the Reference frequencywill be made at 1 0 m , whichisobtainedbydivisionof 12.8MHzoutput by 1280. Formula 12.8MHz; 0.O l OMHz = 1280
for 20KHzt30KHz spacing
1,

Examples 155.1375W This frequency can return you the integral number of 1241l only when 12.5KHz is used as the demominatar. Thus use 1024 as division ratio.

3)Apply volt meter between CP 1 and ground and check the reading is within 0.25 V. - 0,3V

4)Make primary alignment of Discriminator. Turn SG output off and turn SQ knob to extreme CCW position. Hissing noise will be heard. Align RTl f Q (MHR455) ta have maximum noise output.
5)Turn SSG output on and gradually increase its output to such level that receiver marginally pick up the SSG signal. AIign RF filter coils RTt 0 l(LB l) - RT105(lB5) by turns xill maximum sensitivity reading is

obtained.

6)Align 1st Local coils of RT107(I;BR203)and RT108(MBR204)in turn, till you have best
semitivity 7)Align cap RT 101&BR40 l), RT 109 (LBR402), alternately to have better sensitivity at the least distorted audio output.

( S Soutput should be set 1KEb modulation, 1.75-

dev.)

8)Tune RT l 10 (MHR455)till maximum audio output i s obtained. (SSG output should be set at IKHz, 1,75= dev.)

-.

Above procedures will:bring the receiver to achieve -9.0- l l .OdBpV at 12dB STNAD.

9)For the multi-channel receiver alignment, check the sensitivitiesat the highest and the lowest channel Regulate the difference within 2dB reference at the center charnel sensitivity between the channels by aligning RT 107 & RT 108 Should those alignment does not bring it to the required sensitivity, additionally make careful fine tuning of VC IQ 1 through VCIOS.

10)Apply osciltosqe between CP4 and GND to observe wave of Discriminator output. It is expected to have 500-700mVp-p when SSG output of +IQ +20dBuV with I= tone of 1.75KHz.

l l) To check SQ sensitivity Rotate SQ knob to extreme CW position and check the squelch sensitivity. It is to have -6.0 to -10.0dBpV with SG output of lKHz 1,75Khz dev.
