Report disasters
Rains and wind cause havoc
The Limpopo Provincial Disaster Management Centre has received preliminary assessment reports of strong winds and heavy rains in the four District Municipalities of Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune and Vhembe. This is due to incidents that occurred on the nights of 30 and 31 October. In Mopani District 134 families were affected in sixteen villages of Greater Giyani and Greater Tzaneen combined. There were eight villages (Guwela, Gawula, Vuhehli, Xitlakati, Matsotsosela, Khashani, Mbawula and Phalaubeni) affected in Greater Giyani alone while eight villages were affected in Greater Tzaneen. The villages affected in Greater Tzaneen are Mawa Block 8, Lekgwareng, Mokhwathi, Mandhlakazi, Mariveni and Leretseng. To date five tents and eight food parcels were provided to affected families at Guwela village. Vhembe District recorded 458 households affected in Makhado, Mutale and Thulamela by the recent strong winds and heavy rain. The Capricorn District has reported 40 households, three schools and a nurses home were affected in the Blouberg Local Municipality. Sekhukhune District has 293 affected households that occurred in Makhuduthamaga, Fetakgomo, Greater Tubatse and Elias Motsoaledi municipalities. Fetakgomo has provided four emergency tents and mattresses to affected families, while Makhuduthamaga has provided one tent, three temporary shelters, fourteen blankets and sponges to all affected villages within its locality. GoGHSTA stressed that the Departments statement is issued based on preliminary reports received. Some affected households have recovered from these incidents. All affected districts are working around the clock to ensure that final reports are submitted to CoGHSTA via the Provincial Disaster Management Centre for consolidation for submission to MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe. As per Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002, municipalities are required to report any incident that occurs in their area to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. The MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe called on members of the community to be vigilant and contact the Provincial Disaster Management Centre on this toll free number 0800 222 111 to report incidents of disaster. Kgetjepe encouraged parents and guardians to warn children not to cross or play near rivers for their safety.
We are in a democracy and supposed to have water, but we do not have, says Mrs Thabita Mnisi of Extension 10 in Burgersfort. This is not the first time. We struggle. I had to buy water I was supposed to have. Water, toilets and service delivery in general are problems we experience every day. Nobody tells us anything and we do not know when it will become better. We are struggling.... See inside on page 2 and 3 the problems residents experience and the reasons why.

Mr Raj Balasubranim said: Mnr Jeffrey Mothebejane s: Apparently they struggled to Hier by Burgersfort is groot clean the water. I had to buy moeilikheid met die water. Two days! Niks water nie. Die water. They must notify us. toilette werk nie. Ons kan nie was nie. Ek sit by die huis maar daar kom niemand wat rapporteer daar sal van so laat tot so laat nie water wees nie. They must take responsibility!
Mnr. Kyk net hierdie gemors.
Mnr Jerome Gibley s: Dit was hel. Ons het even Lydenburg toe gery om daar ordentlik te gaan was.
Me.
Mr Mehboob Patel said: We are buying water to drink. We did not bath for 2 days now. Our work also stopped. Lepelle Northern must warn business people so they can prepare. Around here people were buying water for R2 a bucket.
Mr Tsheko Malepe said: It drives us crazy. They never warn us. Especially leading up to the election this government is failing us. Some of our residents want to march to the municipality because they never warn us about things like this. We spend 2 days without bathing. We run small businesses. How do you cook without water? Water is life. There is nothing we can do but hope to see changes in the next Ms Lebogang Papole had a big load of washing to do once she had water general election. Those in again. She said: We suffered a lot. We had to buy water. power are forgetting us.
Mr Keith Henriques runs a hair salon and without water his business is very limited. He keeps book of when he has to cancel appointments due to no water supply. This is ridiculous! When I worked in Cape Town someone from the municipality always came to warn us about interruptions in the water or electricity supply

With less than a month left in its 2014 entry process, the iconic Comrades Marathon has already amassed nearly 14000 entries. International participants from as far afield as Egypt, China, Canada and India as well as a host of European countries will represent more than 60 nations in The Ultimate Human Race, come Sunday, 1 June 2014. The three-month long entry process for the 89th edition of South Africas most famous road-running race opened on 1 September and will close at the end of November 2013 or as soon as the entry cap of 18,000 has been reached. The entry barometer currently stands at 13900 and is steadily rising. Entry is open to all athletes, be they novices or veteran Comrades Marathon runners. Qualifying for the 2014 Comrades Marathon is applicable as of 2 June 2013 until 5 May 2014. Runners have been urged to take careful note of the entry criteria. For more details, please visit the official Comrades Marathon website: www.comrades.com The CMA has urged all aspirant Comrades Marathon runners who have not yet entered the 2014 running of the Comrades Marathon, to enter soon to secure a space in next years down-run, starting outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. CMA Race Director Johan Van Staden says: The attraction of the Comrades Marathon to ultra-runners across South Africa and all parts of the world has meant that our entries are being taken up very quickly. At the rate at which entries are coming in, we anticipate that the cap of 18000 will be reached well before 30 November. No extensions will be granted. Van Staden adds: We warmly welcome all of our international participants but greatly value our local Comrades Marathon runners who have made the race the epic event that it is today. With little more than 4000 spaces left before the close of the entry process, we urge our regular runners to enter as soon as possible so as not to be left disappointed.
