Over the past centuries, litmus has been used as the oldest form of pH indicator in the world.

pH indicators are used to indicate the acidity of solutions. Because it had been proven to be effective, litmus paper is still used until now. As a matter of fact, litmus paper is the most widely used type of pH paper. Schools generally use it for science and chemistry classes. However, we cannot deny that litmus paper is expensive; therefore, the researchers have decided to look for an alternative product that is much cheaper yet has equal effectiveness as the well-known Litmus paper a Turmeric pH paper. Although both have the same concept, the researchers idea is to produce the paper itself out of turmeric and still be able to determine pH levels.

METHODOLOGY Materials

Procedure The turmeric first underwent grinding processes. An initial 10 grams of turmeric was grinded into small pieces until its particles were powdered. The remaining bigger particles of turmeric were then grinded again. With this procedure, its particles became finer. If powdered turmeric, on the other hand, was to be used, the aforementioned grinding phases are not necessary. To make the turmeric solution thicker, the fine turmeric was mixed with glue. The amount of glue used in every trial depended on the quantity of the turmeric. Water can also be added for additional lumpiness. Moreover, the glue also makes the turmeric wholesome. The turmeric pulp was placed on a board covered with a plastic wrapper or a food wrapper. The turmeric was

flattened by covering it with another wrapper. The plastic cover was then removed and the product was blow-dried for an hour. The turmeric was peeled from the board and was cut into strips. According to Daniels, the author of the guidelines on how to make a turmeric pH paper on ehow.com, turmeric should be dipped in three solution sets; vinegar, water and baking soda. These solutions are neutral, acidic and alkaline, respectively. The paper should remain yellow in the vinegar and water but turn red in the baking soda solution.
