AMERICAN STUDIES SOCIAL STUDIES (FOLEY)

How does history impact the world we live in today?

THE 1920s SOCIAL CHANGES RESEARCH PROJECT
Overview:
Many historians have argued that modern America began in the years after World War I a time more commonly known as the Roaring 20s. While it may seem crazy to think that Derrick Rose has any connection with The Babe, or Kanye owes a debt to Satchmo, it is possible that history may be able to teach us about the world we live in today. In this project, student teams will research different ways American society changed in the 1920s to try to determine if this was indeed the beginning of modern America. Each team will be assigned an aspect of social change from the 1920s. Please check your groups topic below: Prohibition and Gangsterism The Transportation Revolution The New Woman of the 1920s Consumerism The Harlem Renaissance Radio and the Movies Procedure: Teams will work together to research their topic and create a presentation to the class about their aspect of social change. Here is what is required of each group: 1. An accurate and thorough explanation of the assigned social change that occurred in the 1920s. (50 points) 2. A thoughtful analysis of the question: How does history impact the world we live in today? Analysis should include an answer to the question (based on 1920s and 2013 society) and facts, details, examples that support the answer. (30 points) 3. Creativity and effectiveness. Students must be engaged during your presentation (thats the creativity part) and they must clearly learn about your topic (thats the effectiveness part). (20 points) Here is a suggested procedure for completing this assignment: 1. The team reads the overview of the topic* together, then outlines the main points that will need to be in the presentation. 2. The team works on the Prezi by entering the outline into the presentation, making sure it is understandable. 3. The team expands on the basic outline with research. Pictures, videos, stories, etc. will all make your presentation more creative and effective. 4. The team brainstorms ways we can see the impact of this social change in our society today. Research your ideas, deepen your explanation, and add this element to the Prezi. 5. The team rehearses the presentation and finishes it up with any last minute changes that need to be made.
