Dual-source CT: contrast matters

Siemens Healthcare, Germany, claims that its new Optimum Contrast imaging software "will bring new levels of contrast" to sectional images generated by its recently launched dual-source CT system, Somatom Definition. The software, which is previewing at the 10th Annual International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT in Las Vegas, NV, this week, forms part of the manufacturer's drive to make dual-energy CT, hitherto restricted to specialist clinical investigations, compatible with a broader range of routine examinations involving contrast media. According to a press statement, Optimum Contrast enables CT systems, "for the first time", to combine the advantages of CT images taken at low- and high-voltage values. More specifically, that means the higher resolution of displayed blood vessels at 80 kV plus the low levels of image noise at 140 kV. The software contains proprietary image optimization algorithms that analyse the 3D data and determine the optimal mix of high and low voltage from the two X-ray sources for every image voxel. It's this functionality that makes soft tissue and vascular structures containing contrast medium more recognizable, according to Siemens. Other Siemens announcements in Las Vegas included a portfolio of dual-energy applications for Somatom Definition: syngo DE Heart PBV (perfusion blood volume), which provides colour-marking of nonperfused parts of the myocardium during cardiological examinations. syngo DE Gout, which enables CT to be used in the detection of gout. syngo DE Lung Vessels, a series of applications to assist in CT examinations of patients with suspected pulmonary embolism. syngo DE Brain Hemorrhage, which helps to distinguish between new and old haemorrhages in the event of cerebral bleeding. "We see vast potential for dual-energy imaging combined with tools such as Optimum Contrast to provide a dimension of contrast in CT, improving diagnostic outcomes and simplifying complex workflows," said Andr Hartung, vice-president of marketing and sales at Siemens Healthcare's CT business unit.
