THE EVOLUTION OF A STYLISTIC MOTIF

What began as a simple interest in a statement made during one of the Le Corbusier lectures at the recently concluded MOMA exhibit evolved into a much more intricate philosophy on both the aesthetics and meaning of form.

REGARDING THE ROLE OF A BUILDING WITHIN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT I FOUND PARTICULARLY COMPELLING. TO HIM, THE OUTSIDE OF A BUILDING FUNCTIONED AS A SORT OF INTERIOR. THAT IS TO SAY, BECAUSE A BUILDING GROWS TO FUNCTION AS AN ORGANIC COMPONENT OF ITS SURROUNDINGS, THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ARE INSEPERABLE.

I BEGAN THINKING ABOUT THIS IDEA IN OTHER DESIGN TERMS, QUESTIONING THE ROLE AN OBJECT PLAYED WITHIN ITS IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS. I WONDERED IF IT WERE POSSIBLE TO EMPLOY BOTH NEGATIVE SPACE AS WELL INTERACTION WITH NEGATIVE SPACE TO CREATE A SORT OF AESTHETIC AND CONCEPTUAL FLUIDITY.

I SAY CONCEPTUAL FLUIDITY BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THIS SEEMS TO BE SIMPLY A STYLISTIC TECHNIQUE, IT GETS AT THE IDEA OF AN OBJECT BEING DEFINED BY ITS NEGATIVE. THIS RAISES NUMEROUS QUESTIONS THAT ARE STIMULATING FROM MUCH MORE THAN JUST A COSMETIC LEVEL.

A FEW EARLY EXAMPLES

BUILDING A BACKGROUND

The background is intended to provide both a surface to support the form in the foreground, as well as a vehicle for interaction. Because of this I split the background into several geometric areas that would suggest movement similar to that of the object in the foreground, but not identical.

DRAWING THE FORM ITSELF

The form is drawn through a series of fragments, essentially identifying the key components of movement and structure that can be used as either negative space (an extension of the backing color) or positive space in the final stages of coloring.

PROMOTIONAL WORK FOR MILK STUDIOS MADE FASHION WEEK // 2013

WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY CAME TO WORK WITH TOPO DESIGNS, I WAS THRILLED.

Topo has been able to successfully combine menswear and technical quality in each seasonal release. Because of this, they have amassed a substantial following in both the finicky made in USA menswear market as well as the outdoor enthusiat crowd. This is a particularly interesting crossover and one that I sought to build upon both in concept and execution. I found inspiration in the manner in which Visvim used a range of technical fabrics on their Ballistic backpack. I also thought a nod towards streetwear / menswear would provide a solid aesthetic backing. I opted to look at the limited Nike Air Max release back from 2009, created by the Dutch Boutique Patta. This seemed to be an overlooked colorway with an intrinsic autumn aesthetic.

VISVIM BALLISTIC PATTA AIR MAX

After months of work, the finished product involved a bacpack and Dopp Kit with both 1000 D Nylon and 600 D Nylon, oxblood leather, and a hand drawn camo print for the collab tagging. The colorway chosen remained true to the initial concept of referencing the Patta Air Max.
