I

t is often during times of

extreme devastation when
children first see how commu-
nities can join together
to help one another.
Such efforts may be a
childs initial exposure
to charity while high-
lighting the impor-
tance of putting anoth-
er persons needs before
your own.
But children need
not be exposed charity
solely during times of
tragedy. Teaching children
to be charitable is one of the
ways to help them become good
citizens of the world. By helping
others, parents can instill early on
lessons of kindness, empathy and
compassion into their sons and
daughters. Children who are
ready and willing to lend a help-
ing hand may grow up to be more
appreciative of what they have in
their own lives.
Whats more,
they may
learn to be selfless while assigning
less value to material things.
Youngsters who repeatedly
see their own parents and other
role models doing good
and lending a helping
hand may be more inclined
to repeat that behavior,
and giving will be the
norm for them rather
than the exception.
To mold charitable
children, families can
employ the following tech-
niques.
Start locally. There are peo-
ple right in your own community
or on the street where you live
who can benefit from a helping
hand. Ask an elderly neighbor if
he or she needs assistance with
shopping for groceries or could
benefit from your child taking in
the garbage cans after pickup.
Children can help shovel snow
from sidewalks or do other age-
appropriate tasks, such as place a
carelessly strewn newspaper clos-
er to a neighbors door.
Volunteer as a family. The
entire family can get together and
spend time working at a commu-
nity-sponsored carnival or clean-
ing debris from an area beach.
Volunteer work may be available
at your childs school, where fam-
ilies can plant gardens around the
property. When volunteering as a
family, not only is your entire
family helping to do good, but
youre spending quality time
together as well.
Make charitable donations.
Let children see the solicitations
for monetary donations that
come in the mail. Read aloud the

two kids nearing college and
my unemployment checks
have stopped. What do I do
now?
Im 51, the company I
work for was just sold, people
are being let go, I believe I
may be next to get fired and
Im not prepared to retire.
What do I do now?
Im 61, my industry is
being phased out by techno-
logical advances, Im too
young for Medicare, too
young to receive my pension
and too old to find another
job. What do I do now?
Im 71, retired, with no
weekly paycheck, negative
performance in my portfolio
on top of my withdrawal
needs will deplete my
funds sooner than later. My
parents and in-laws are
already gone so there is no
inheritance to look forward
to. Must I look to my chil-
dren for financial support if
my funds are depleted or is
there another solution?
Im 81, its harder for me
to do the grocery shopping
and clean the house. My
spouse is getting more and
more forgetful every day. We
dont have any long-term
care insurance policies.
What do I do now?
Or
Im 21, out of college
and cant find a job. Its a
good thing that my father
told me to put away 10 per-
cent of my earnings from
each and every paycheck Ive
ever earned from my part-
time jobs as a teenager.
Im 31, just got laid off,
have a big mortgage, a spouse
and two kids. Utilizing the
cash value from my life insur-
ance policy and my mutual
funds that I have been fund-
ing for ten years now, there is
plenty of money at my dis-
posal until I can find the per-
fect job again.
Im 41, recently got
downsized, have a bigger refi-

good thing that I can borrow
against my 401k, my life
insurance cash values and my
mutual funds to keep every-
thing afloat.
Im 51, the company I
work for was just sold, people
are being let go, I believe I
may be next and Im not pre-
pared to retire. Once again,
with a combination of home
equity, life insurance cash
values, all of my mutual
funds and my 401k assets, I
can start my own business or
purchase a franchise, become
my own boss and this
dependence on a job will be
gone forever!
Im 61, my industry is
being phased out by techno-
logical advances, Im too
young for Medicare, too
young to receive my pension
and too old to find another
job. After analyzing my port-
folio, Ive determined I can
actually retire comfortably
for the rest of my life without
the constraints of a job. My
spouse and I both are guaran-
teed an income that will
never diminish or cease,
thanks to our financial advi-
sors advice that we listened

heres a new way to
coerce fearful patients
to visit the dentist,
and it involves a nasal spray.
The nasal spray is cur-
rently undergoing tests to see
if it can substitute the way we
administer Novocaine. Early
trials were successful, so its
possible that permission for
use will be granted this year.
If a nasal spray successful-
ly fills in for the injections in
giving dental anesthesia, it
will go a long way toward
shedding the negative feelings
associated with dental treat-
ments.
Psychological methods,
anti-anxiety medications and
medical procedures are used
today to reduce dental anxiety
with success.

oston Louis Jewelers in
Pequannock is gearing
up for a trunk show on
November 30 from 26pm.
The show will feature the beau-
tiful Nomination jewelry line.
A few years back,
Nomination steel bracelets
with charm links were all the
rage. What most of the fans of
these bracelets didnt know was
that Nomination also designs
stunning high-quality silver
fashion jewelry. All the pieces
are crafted in Italy, renowned
for some of the best-made jew-
elry in the world, and most are
in the very affordable
$100$300 range.
There are many unique
design suites in the
Nomination line. The
Romantica suite consists of
beautiful modern-styled neck-
laces, bracelets and earrings in
filigree heart shapes that are
accented with 18K rose gold
overlay details. The Sorrento
suite features cut-though geo-
metric circles with sun, cloud
or heart shapes. The Sofia suite
uses perfectly cut pastel-colored
semi-precious gems, such as
lavender and green amethyst,
light blue topaz, smoky quartz,
citrine, and green/gold quartz
complimented by brilliant
white cubic zirconias. All are
gorgeous, plated with tarnish
resistant rhodium that also
gives it a brilliant platinum
look. They are pretty enough to
be worn with formal attire but
are designed for everyday.
The wonderful thing
about this Nomination line is
that with many matching ear-
ring, pendant and bracelet sets
available, you can add to your
jewelry wardrobe with each
special occasion. Any piece in
this stunning line is sure to
please that special someone in
your life!

pleas for funds to help chil-
dren and adults who may not
have enough to eat or who
may require medical care.
This is an important lesson in
humility and helps show chil-
dren that not every person in
the world is comfortable.
Once kids have read about the
needs of others, involve them
in the donation process. They
can assist with sorting cloth-
ing and toys they may no
longer need and then help bag
it up and donate it to an
agency that takes collected
items.
Give throughout the
year. Charity need not be lim-
ited to the holiday season.
Inform children that many
people need throughout the
year, and that volunteering is
a year-round activity.
Match kids charitable
fundraising. Encourage chil-
dren to start their own
fundraising efforts and match
the funds they raise. Find
companies that will also
match the amount your chil-
dren have raised.
Set up a giving policy.
Children can learn the impor-
tance of giving at an early age
by dividing their allowances
and financial gifts into differ-
ent categories. They can put
one-third toward savings, one-
third toward spending and
one-third toward donations. If
children do not have a lot of
money in a piggy bank, they
can donate their time, which
many charities need as much
as money.

H
ome health care is a
preferred way of
care for those who
wish to receive quality indi-
vidualized services in the
comfort of their homes.
Recipients of home health
care include the elderly,
those living with an illness
and those recovering from an
accident or surgery.
Choosing a quality home
health care agency is not an
easy decision. Here are some
helpful points to consider:
1.Is the agency certified by a
reputable Accrediting Body
of Healthcare Organization,
such as the Commission on
Accreditation for Home
Care, Inc. (CAHC), which
is New Jerseys largest and
only state-based home care
accreditation program?
2.Is the agency available
24/7 with an RN supervisor
on-call if necessary?
3.Is there a proper process for
the hiring, screening and
training of employees? Note:
RNs need to be licensed by
the New Jersey Board of
Nursing, and home health
aides should be well-trained
on emergency, disease or
infection control, and safety
measures.
4.Is there an efficient caregiv-
er-client matching procedure
to ensure individual expecta-
tions and needs are met?
5.Is there an RN-approved
and tailor-made plan of care
developed for the agencys
home health aides to follow
for each specific client?
6.Is there an efficient com-
munication system in place
between the agency, the care-
giver and client for handling
concerns and issues, such as a
home health aide running
late or unable to make it to
work?
7.What payment options are
available, including group
health plans, long-term care
insurance, Medicaid, private/
self-pay and veterans bene-
fits?
8.Are the services being
offered by the agency right
for you or your loved one?
Does the agency offer skilled
services performed by an RN,
such as medication set-up per
physician orders, infusions,
and wound care? Does it offer
non-skilled services generally
performed by home health
aides, including companion-
ship, daily errands, light
housekeeping and meal
preparation?

t the 2012 Olympics,
74 men from 61
countries competed
in the 100 meter dash. Usain
Bolt left his competition in
the dust, setting a new world
record. But 20 runners were
within a half-second of his
qualifying time and 50 run-
ners were within one second.
No matter how good you
think you may be at what you
do, there is a lot of competi-
tion out there.
If we focus our energies
on beating others, even when
we are successful, the question
remains for how long? First
place is a fickle and unsustain-
able perch. No matter how
powerful something may
seem, the relentless onslaught
of time has a way of eroding
the most formidable champi-
on because they are alone and
exposed. Everyone is aiming
to knock them off their podi-
um. Thats what happens in a
world fueled by competition;
everyone else is a potential
enemy.
Instead, my goal is to be
the best at finding common
pathways of success for others
around me. We all have the
opportunity to journey alone
or together. By sharing the
win, we find instead that
everyone else is a potential
ally. It doesnt dilute your suc-
cess it multiplies it.

T
hough it may seem like
dogs have stomachs of
steel, no dog is invin-
cible. Sometimes they may be
struck with stomach upset or a
symptom that indicates there
is a problem.
The American Veterinary
Medical Association cites
canine digestive issues as one of
the main reasons people bring
their dogs to see a vet. Dogs
have different digestive systems
than humans, and one notable
difference is that dogs do not
have digestive enzymes in their
saliva. Food does the majority
of its breaking down within
the canine stomach, which
requires the stomach to pro-
duce more acid than a humans.
This extra acid is what helps
dogs digest meats, particularly
raw ones, more readily, but it
may cause issues when intro-
duced to uncooked produce or
starches.
There are different stom-
ach ailments that may arise in
a dog and subsequent treat-
ment methods. Understanding
what might be going on can
help you seek medical advice
when necessary or avoid a trip
to the vets office.
VOMITING: Infrequent
vomiting is generally nothing
to get worried over. When a
dog eats something that is not
readily digested, he or she may
regurgitate the offender quite
quickly. Dogs who quickly eat
large amounts of food also may
find they have eaten too much
and regurgitate the contents of
their stomachs. Sometimes a
dog will vomit a frothy, yellow-
colored liquid. This is usually
bile that can be irritating to the
stomach. Smaller portions of
food spread out throughout the
day instead of one large meal
can help reduce vomiting.
When vomiting is fre-
quent and you notice any
other problems, such as weight
loss or refusal of foods, it is best
to consult with a veterinarian.
The dog may have eaten
something that is inappropri-
ate or poisonous.
DIARRHEA: Dogs are
not immune to diarrhea. Just
like humans, diarrhea is often
a byproduct of intestinal upset
rather than irritation in the
stomach. Many times dogs
may be afflicted with diarrhea
if they have intestinal para-
sites, such as certain types of
worms. There also may be a
foreign form of bacteria in the
body that causes irritation in
the intestines.
Diarrhea is often not a
cause for concern. It may
resolve on its own or by feed-
ing the dog a bland diet with
rice to absorb extra water from
the intestines. Frequent diar-
rhea will need further action
and may be indicative of a
larger problem.
Much like people, dogs
can suffer from colitis, an irri-
tation of the intestines. In
such instances, a dogs stool
may appear full of mucous and
be very loose. Dogs who are
normally house-trained may
have trouble making it out-
doors and soil the house. Vets
may prescribe antibiotics and a
bland diet for a week or two to
get digestive health back on
track.
ULCERS: Ulcers can
develop in dogs when their
bodies are in shock from a
severe bacterial infection,
blood pressure problem or
even a heart problem. Ulcers
also may be the result of taking
certain medications. Dogs
with ulcers may produce vomit
with specks of old blood mixed
in. A vet may prescribe
antacids and a bland diet for
ulcers, much like a doctor
would for a person.
CANINE GASTRI-
TIS: This is a condition of
irritation in the stomach due
to a foreign object or food
allergy. Some instances of
canine gastritis are a result of
dogs eating garbage or grass. In
acute cases, canine gastritis
often goes away on its own in
one to two days. If it does not,
it may be chronic gastritis,
which results from a food aller-
gy or by consuming hairballs
or something that cannot be
digested, like plastic.
A vet can do a test
called a gastroscopy
to narrow down gas-
tritis diagnoses.
BLOAT: Bloat,
or gastric dilation-
volvulus, is a very
serious ailment that
occurs when there is a
problem with digestion.
Something causes gases to
build up in the dogs stomach
and inflate it like a balloon.
The stomach also may twist
inside the body, causing the
esophagus to wrap around
itself as well as the bottom part
of the stomach at the pyloric
valve. This further prevents
the gas from escaping as nor-
mal. Eventually the stomach
may grow so large it cuts off
circulation to the heart, and
the dog may go into cardiac
arrest.
It is important to react
very quickly if you suspect
your dog has bloat. Surgery
may be needed, and even a few
minutes can mean the differ-
ence between life and death.
There are many digestive
ailments that can afflict dogs,
so its best to always consult
with a veterinarian when you
suspect there is a problem.

ts not too late to make
moves to reduce your 2013
taxes if you are a business
owner.
Use the new streamlined
home-office rules. Many self-
employed taxpayers declined
to claim the home-office
deduction because it was so
complicated to compute. For
2013, the deduction is stream-
lined, allowing for a deduction
of $5 per square foot, up to a
maximum of 300 square feet or
$1,500.
Create a retirement plan. Its
not too late to create a retire-
ment plan for yourself and
your employees if you have
them. The plans can be simple
to set up and administer, such
as a Simplified Employee
Pension (SEP) plan. A 401(k)
plan could be established even
for a one-person business.
While some of these plans
must be established by the end
of the year, most can be fund-
ed up to the extended due date
of the tax return.
Purchase business equip-
ment. Up to $500,000 (sched-
uled to be reduced significant-
ly to $25,000 in 2014) in busi-
ness equipment purchases can
be expensed this year, rather
than being expensed over a
number of years. Additionally,
there is also a 50 percent
bonus depreciation allowance
(that will not be available in
2014) if your purchases exceed
the $500,000 limit. This might
be the last year to maximize
your equipment purchase
deductions to such an extent.
Deduct health insurance. If
you are self-employed, you are
allowed to claim 100% of the
amount paid for health insur-
ance for yourself, your spouse
and your dependents as long as
you follow certain conditions.
Consider credit card pur-
chases. If you want to purchase
equipment or supplies for your
business before the end of the
year, but you are cash-
strapped, consider using your
credit card. Your deduction
occurs this year when the pur-
chase is made, not next year
when the credit card charges
are paid.

end tax planning for your busi-
ness, contact our office.

ime is in short supply
during the holiday sea-
son. Between the shop-
ping, cooking, baking and
wrapping, there seems to be
precious few hours to tackle
anything else. Those who
desire an old-fashioned, home-
made holiday can still experi-
ence all of the seasonal magic
by deferring some of the work
to local busi-
nesses.
DECORATING
Much of the splen-
dor of the holiday sea-
son comes directly
from the intricately
decorated houses and
storefronts. Twinkling
lights and garlands of
fresh pine boughs can
instantly transform any
building. Decorating a
home can take an entire day or
more, but delegating the work
to a decorating service will pro-
vide you with professional-
looking results as well as free
time to tackle other obliga-
tions. Decorators can work out-
doors stringing lights and creat-

fraction of the time it takes
homeowners to decorate their
homes.

BAKING
What would the holiday
season be without the sweet
treats and inviting smells of
freshly baked goods? The cool-
er weather is an ideal time to
turn on the oven and whip up a
batch of cookies or cakes with
the aroma of pungent cinna-
mon and nutmeg. Others
would prefer desserts that pro-
vide homemade flair without
the effort. Local bakeries expe-
rience an upswing in business
this time of year as shoppers
flock to choose among the pas-
tries, cookies and pies in display
cases. Whether a dessert comes
directly from your kitchen or
that of a local confectionary
shop, chances are guests will
enjoy each delectable bite. If
you have a custom-order
dessert in mind, consult with
the bakery well in advance to
ensure your dessert will be
available when hosting friends
and family.
CATERING
Roasts and lavish tables
are part of the holiday season,
but so are the corporate parties
and cocktail events that com-
prise a social season. Catering a
party is an easy way to offer
guests delicious food with min-
imal work. Local caterers can
provide everything from sit-
down dinners to buffet spreads.
Some restaurants that do not
normally cater events may
offer special packages this time
of year. Different customers are
vying for the services of cater-
ers within a small window of
time. Contract with a preferred
caterer early on to guarantee
you can benefit from their
services.
PARTIES
Social calendars fill
up come November and
December. When hosting a
gathering of coworkers, fami-
ly or friends, choose local
venues for social events so
travel to and from the party
is easier on guests. Parties
can take place anywhere,
including movie theaters,
bowling alleys, wine stores,
and indoor floral nurseries.
GIFTING
Shopping at local vendors
often means more personalized
service and a less stressful expe-
rience. Develop a rapport with
a favorite shop owner so that
he or she can alert you to pri-
vate sales or put coveted items
on the side. A specialty store
may have that unique gift not
easily found elsewhere, and
shop owners may be able to
special-order bulk gifts. Smaller
retailers may also offer special-
ized services, such as gift-wrap-
ping or personal shopping.
Shopping locally can help
holiday shoppers save time and
support their communities.

his year more than
5.4 million homes
were sold by the end
of August, according to the
National Association of
Realtors. Are you one of these
millions of new homeowners?
If so, youve most likely felt
the urge to settle in immedi-
ately. However, before mak-
ing any major renovations, its
a good idea to live in a new
home a while to see how the
space is meeting your needs.
Here are a few swift swaps
that will have a big impact in
making that new house feel
like home sweet home.
PERSONALIZE WITH
PAINT
It may be the most obvi-
ous update but painting is an
easy solution to change the
look of a room in an instant.
Whether you paint an entire
room,-create a bold accent
wall or incorporate glossy
white trim, paint is an afford-
able fix for any home.
You can easily and
quickly bring your design
ideas to life with Shape Tape
from FrogTape. Available in
three on-trend patterns:
Wave, Chevron and Scallop,
Shape Tape makes it simple to
achieve unique, repetitive
decorative painting styles.
Each roll of tape features a
pre-cut repeating pattern, so
all you need to do is simply
unroll, apply and get painting
to create your desired look.
From delicate, narrow waves
throughout a bathroom or
nursery, to bold, wide chevron
patterns in the living area or
bedroom, this tape can be
used in any room of the
house.
FABULOUS FRAMES
When moving into a
new space, the things you
love should take center stage.
Once your home reflects who
you are, the rest will slowly
fall into place. Photo frames
are the ideal choice to add a
decorative and personalized
touch to any room. Bring this
common decor pick into the
modern age by creating a per-
sonal gallery and displaying
frames of varying shapes and
sizes. To do this, plan the lay-
out of the frames before hang-
ing, either with paper on the
wall or by arranging them on
the floor. Or, you can simply
purchase pre-arranged frame
galleries at home decor retail-
ers.

its resale value. However, new
homeowners who are strapped
for cash may not have a large
budget for a full-scale bath-
room remodel. Fortunately,
there are several basic swaps
that can quickly change the
look and feel of a bath.
The easiest way to
remodel your bathroom is to
replace its hardest-working
fixture - the faucet. This is a
project new homeowners can
tackle themselves at a reason-
able price. Moen offers a wide
variety of faucet options like

prints and water spots, so the
faucet will stay looking clean
as you show it off to family

look, swap out old hardware

accessories including robe

Apple Cinnamon Loaf
E
veryone loves the flavor
sage brings to turkey
and stuffing yet there
are so many great ways to
enjoy this holiday flavor
beyond its traditional use.
Sage has that special
aroma we all crave this time of
year, which is why I love
adding it in my potato gratin
with creamy cheddar cheese
for a dish that immediately
says holiday, said Mary Beth
Harrington of the McCormick
Kitchens. You can use sage in
your everyday favorites
because its such a versatile
spice.
Make every moment of
the season a little more savory
by:
Stirring sage into soft-
ened butter for green beans,
broccoli and rolls.
Sprinkling sage on sweet
potatoes, butternut squash or
other roasted harvest vegeta-
bles.
Mixing sage into meat-
loaf for a festive family meal.
Sage and Cheddar Potato
Gratin
Makes 12 (1/2 cup) servings
2 teaspoons McCormick
Rubbed Sage
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon McCormick
Ground Black Pepper
3 pounds Yukon Gold pota-
toes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 package (8 ounces) shred-
ded cheddar cheese (2 cups)
1 cup chicken broth
1 up heavy cream
reheat oven to 400F.
Mix sage, salt and pepper in
small bowl. Layer 1/3 of the
potatoes and 1/2 of the onion
in lightly greased 13-by-9-
inch baking dish. Sprinkle
with 1 teaspoon of the sage
mixture and 1/3 of the cheese.
Repeat layers. Top with
remaining potatoes, sage mix-
ture and cheese.
Stir broth and cream in
medium bowl with wire whisk
until well blended. Pour even-
ly over potatoes.
Bake 1 hour or until
potatoes are tender and top is
golden. Let stand 5 minutes
before serving.
