Testing was conducted at the crimp dimensions stated below. 18 AWG: Nominal CCW (+/- 0.05) 2.05mm CCH (+/- 0.05) 1.15mm ICW (+/- 0.05) 2.60mm ICH (+/- 0.05) 2.15mm

Comments and Observations


18 AWG M1L123A wire was used for this test. As with all crimp studies, it is recommended that the nominal crimp height be used for best performance with the minimum and maximum heights as tolerances. All terminal samples were crimped in the Product Evaluation Laboratory at our FCI Novi facility.

A Special Note on Terminal Serrations after Crimping; Mistaking Interior Terminal Serrations for Terminal Cracking
This is a micrograph/ photograph of a cross section of the core/conductor crimped grip wings of a terminal. There are serrations in the interior of the core grip/ crimp wings of many of our terminal systems. These serrations are sometimes in the form of slots or indented boxes so that when the wire is placed into the grips for crimping, the edges of those slots help to bite into the wire, thereby displacing or penetrating the very light oxidation already on that wire. In the photo below, we see two of the serrations at the bottom of the crimp which remain intact as to formation since the bottom of the crimp is only slightly curved after crimping. Those are circled and marked as A on the photograph. However, serrations higher up in the U up of the grip will collapse and form over onto themselves during crimping. Two of those serrations are circled in this photograph and marked with a B. These collapsed serrations are sometimes mistaken for cracks in the terminal. They are not cracks, they are not defects and are a normal artifact of crimping terminals with interior serrations in the core grip. Some photos will not show these serrations. Since the serrations are staggered within the crimp core, a cross section of that crimp core will not always cut directly across the serrations thereby exposing them.
