Chapter 26: Lunch Time Revelry at Carnival De Goa

One of the biggest disadvantages of working in an office located on M.G. Road is that a good, value-for-money lunch is very hard to come by. So when I discovered Carnival De Goa, I held on tight. Walking distance from Trinity Circle, quick service, lovely ambiance, reasonable prices and great tasting food! For a while now, I have been raving about it to the other big biters and promised to take them there. We finally got around to it on that perfect Tuesday for lunch.

Prakash and Rohan, responding to my threats- came right on time and picked me up to head over to a much awaited lunch. It was Suveers birthday (Who is Suveer you ask? a friend whose bite is bigger than his bark and since his office was magnanimous enough to give him a day off, we invited him and his wife Devishree to join us. Faithful to the custom of tardiness we were all used to, Suveer was nowhere near the place when we got there, so the three of us decided to order. Carnival De Goa, true to its name, is a restaurant which brings the taste and spirit of Goa on a platter! The )

waiters are dressed in tropical shirts and hats and are warm and full of smiles. The walls are adorned with the colourful humour of Mario De Miranda and the music is lively. After browsing through the menu and resisting to order everything that was there, we zeroed in on the Prawns in Peri Peri Sauce and the Chilly Beef. We went back to contemplating on what to order and while our noses were still in the menu our starters arrived.

The prawns were incredible! They were fresh and soft and rather large sized. We had been skeptical about the Peri Peri Sauce thinking it was not so Goan, but once we tasted it, we were very glad we had listened to the waiter and ordered it. The chilly beef was very nice too-the beef strips were soft and well marinated- but it was very spicy and both Prakash and I quickly ordered Lime Juices to soothe our throats. Nevertheless it was

yummy and we could not stop eating it. We were craving for some bread to balance the spice, but Goan Pav was our only option. Prakash was against ordering it but our waiter recommended it and we finally decided to take the risk. It came almost immediately and it was lovely. It was slightly hard on the exterior, but inside, it was soft, warm and delicious and the perfect supplement for the starters we had ordered.

The reason I prefer to go there on weekdays is because they have these fantastic thali combos available at lunch time. So I insisted we order the thali. There are three options- fish, chicken and prawn- and all are perfect solutions to a workday lunch dilemma. Prakash chose the Chicken Thali, Rohan preferred the Prawn Thali and I decided on sharing with both of them. I was pretty full with all the prawn-pav-beef overeating! At about this time Suveer walked in along with Devishree and his cousin. After showing off his new phone and announcing that it was his birthday (yet again), everyone settled down. We passed the remaining bits of the prawn to them and they loved it so much they decided to order the Peri Peri Prawn again. While we waited for the food much chatter and laughter ensued. It had been a long time since we had met the couple and we were all truly enjoying ourselves. Soon the thalis and the main courses came, distracting us all from the nonsensical conversation we were having. Once I describe the thali to you, it will be clear why I will always vouch for this restaurant. The portions are fantastic and each and every morsel tastes so very good. Let me start with the Prawn Thali: It comes on a platter with a big bowl of rice, vegetable concoction of the day (it was ladies finger that day), a clam preparation-Tisrea Sukhem, a dried shrimp-coconut preparation-Kismur, a large piece of fried fish and best of all- A bowl of Prawn Curry. Additionally, you get a shot glass of Solkadi, pappad and pickle. What constitutes a better lunch?! I will not delve into detailed descriptions, but I can tell you that all of it is

We loved it and the portions were so good that two were enough for the three of us! Somewhere in between Prakash and Rohan ordered a plate of Chappati which neither of them liked. (Who orders chappati in a Goan restaurant?!) We were pretty stuffed but we could not leave without desert. Predictably we ordered the Bebinca. I have eaten a lot of Bebinca, but I must say this one was awesome. It was served warm and with a scoop of ice-cream and it was so good that we could not put our spoons down till we had polished it off. By then it was close to 3.00 pm and I had long overstayed my lunch hour. Rohan and Prakash too had some work and so decided to leave with me. Suveer tried some half-hearted emotional blackmail to make us stay but he was too preoccupied with his food and so, we paid our bill, said our good-byes and left. All in all it was a memorable lunch with lots of laughter, even more senseless conversation and food we will always talk of!
