Introduction Modern digital switching systems are highly susceptible to transient voltage disturbances. The traditional protection offered by shunt-connected gas filled arresters is no longer a suitable form of protection for these switches. Novaris Technologies MDF module protectors feature multistage protection providing lower let through voltages which provide a safe working environment for sensitive digital equipment. Operation Novaris Technologies multipair protectors are multistage overvoltage protection modules designed for the protection of PSTN equipment and low voltage control circuits, against transient overvoltages caused by lightning, induced impulses and other voltage surges. Each protection module contains ten protection circuits on a single PCB. Each circuit consists of a primary three terminal gas filled arrester, secondary series impedance followed by a tertiary stage transient clamping circuit. The gas arrester provides protection by bypassing transient overvoltages to ground. The arrester is chosen to have a fast impulse response. The secondary stage comprises a series element in each leg consisting of a series impedance which acts in blocking energy let through the gas filled arrester stage.

KP10 protection modules are virtually maintenance free as they are designed to fail-safe. The PCB tracks between the line side terminals and gas arrester primary protection act as fuses, causing the line to open circuit in the event of a surge exceeding the capacity of the primary arrester. This failure mode is preferred to an open circuit arrester, which gives no indication of failure. Should such a failure occur, service would be interrupted giving a positive indication of a fault condition. The blown fuses are visible on the exposed circuit board.
Line Fuses
KP10 modules are earthed via two earth tabs, which connect to the KRONE LSA* frame. These heavyduty tabs are substantially built and provide excellent contact with the frame. For later model tubular rod frames, special earth connectors are available as shown in the figure below. The KP10 is suitable for PSTN services. The KP1020 is designed for ISDN, RS232 and UTP network applications. Other voltage ratings are available on request.
