Materials/Teaching Aids- Readers Theatre and writing paper Equipment Needed- Computer (PowerPoint Program) References- Signore, Margaret; Simpson, Debra, A play Called..I Want to Be, T.S. Denison & Co., Inc. 1995 Reading Street Unit 2; Pearson Scott Foresman, New York, New York, 2008. Lesson- (1st grade) This lesson is meant to accompany Unit 2 of the Scott Foresman Reading Series. After reading the story Who Works Here?, first grade students will practice, read, and perform the Readers Theatre titled I Want to Be. Each student will be given a part to read of the readers theatre that will be later performed in front Ms. Katies Kindergarten class. A readers theatre is a good tool to use to increase reading fluency and the topic of jobs goes along with their reading story for this week. Students will practice the play daily until the end of the week, when the performance will take place. On Friday, students will also be required to write about a career/job that they are interested in. A rubric will be used to assess their writing and understanding of the different jobs they have been taught throughout the week. (Kindergarten-Lesson and Procedures) (1) This lesson will expand on our story Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten by Joseph Slate, Illustrated by Ashley Wolff. This story talks about going on a field trip to visit different occupations within the community. 2

After reading the story we will talk about the occupations in the story (baker, fireman, mailman/mailwoman, librarian, and teacher). It is important the boys and girls discuss what the worker does in their occupation and why their job is important. (2) We will also make a chart listing the other jobs in our community (police officer, bank teller, waitress, etc.). (3) Introduce, sing, and practice the song Who Is It? (We will sing this song for first grade students after they perform their readers theatre). (4) We will then write When I grow up I want to be a ____________. I will help my community by ________. The children will receive a pre-written sentence and they can fill in the blank. Teacher will need to dictate for many students. To accompany their writing they will draw a picture of their future occupation and what they will do. (5) Boys and girls will then get to choose a hand puppet to color and put together (custodian, mailwoman, dentist, nurse, fireman, or police officer). They will use their hand puppet to talk to their friends and family about what that person does in their occupation and why they are important to our community. (6) First grade will come in to perform their readers theatre. Then we will perform our Who Is It? Song! When first grade is finished we will play a roll the cube game school workers. We will put first grade and kindergarten in groups. To play the game they will roll the dice and talk about as a group what that person does at our school and why they are important. Sometimes young boys and girls do not understand or know all the workers it takes to run a school smoothly, so first grade will serve as a guide and more information for kindergarten students. They will also talk about the important rules that each worker has for students to follow. Procedures1. Brainstorm a list of jobs. 2. Read story titled Who Works Here from Unit 2 of the Scott Foreman Reading Series. 3. Have a class discussion on the jobs that are in our community. 3

4. Explain the Readers Theater called I Want to Be and assign parts. 5. Allow time over the next week to practice and reread the play. 6. On Friday, students will perform the play to Miss Katies kindergarten class. 7. On Friday, students will write about a job that they are interested in and give at least 2 details about that job. Students will use the background knowledge from this weeks story and class discussions, as well as the Readers Theatre. (How you will measure what is learned?) A Writing RubricAbove Expectation (3) Specifies a specific Job that they would like to have. Describes the job giving at least two details about it. Writing is readable and uses correct grammar and punctuation including capital letters. 4 On Task/Meet Requirements (2) Needs Improvement (1)

For Kindergarten I will measure what is learned by, observing their participation during group discussions and group game. In addition, to discussing their writing project. Notes/ReflectionThis lesson goes along with the current reading series and it informs students about jobs in our community. They also are learning to work together to perform a readers theater and play a game. Students will increase their reading fluency and listening skills through a variety of whole group and small group activities. They can also write about/express verbally what they have learned and practice their writing which is an important life-long tool.
