1 why is casting an important manufacturing process.

casting is a center piece in manufacturing many manufacturing process start with casting. Casting is the ideal process to creating large and complex shapes 2 what is the difference between solidification of pure metals and metal alloys pure metals have a specific melting point while metal alloys have a melting range of temperatures

what are dendrites Dendrites means similar tree

state the difference between short and long freezing ranges. how is range determined? Freezing range is the difference between liquid and solid temperature. the median of the range is 50. below 50 is short range. above 50 is long range. define shrinkage and porosity. how can you tell when cavities in a casting are due to porosity or shrinkage shrinkage is when the casting begins to solidify and the metal becomes small than the mold. porosity occurs when gas collects in between the metal as it solidifies causing bubbles in the solidified metal. it may also be caused by shrinkage or both.

what is the function of chills

chills are used to increase the solidification at a certain point

how is fludity defined? why is it important?

fluidity is defined by the ability to flow smoothly and fill into a mold. fluidity is important in casting because the molten metal that is being poured in the gating system. the two factor that important are the characteristic of the molten metal and the casting parameters the capability of molten metal to fill a mold cavities is called fluidity, it consist of two basic factors ; characteristics of molten metal and casting parameters.proper fluidity allows for a full casting mold and reduces the chances of shrinkage or porosity.

explain the reason for hot tearing in casting. hot tearing occur because the casting cannot shrink freely during cooling, tearing the constraints in various portions of the molds and cores. One

factor of hot tearing is coarse grain size, another is low melting points segregate around the edges 11 why is it important to remove dross or slag during the pouring of molten metal into the mold? What methods are used to remove them? Dross is a resultant of flow turbulence that creates a scum that forms on the surface of the molten metal dross or slag can be completely eliminated only by vacuum casting. dross or slag may slow the flow of the molten metal down which may change the way the metal solidifies 12 why is Bernoulli's equation important in casting? Bernoullis equations create a relationship between fluidity and liquid pressure and some constant. The flow and pressure must be calculated. Bernoulli's equation represents an inverse relationship between fluidity of a liquid and liquid pressure. This means that the flow and pressure must be monitored and maintained throughout the casting process. The wall of the casting system is equally important, too permeable means that the molten liquid will absorb through the walls and cause flow decrease of the liquid.
