To learn proper scientic methodologies and develop work ethics in performing project research, development or implementation

Objectives:
1. To specialize in a chosen eld or area of study through a project that applies ones knowledge, skills and research capability 2. To subdivide the project into simpler tasks that can be set as deliverables or milestones 3. To formulate solutions to problems identied within project development 4. To properly document every milestone and problems encountered 5. To present project for panels examination

Project Description:
A project may be in the form of any of the following, and may be a part of or result from a collaboration of dierent laboratories, departments, etc.: Engineering innovation Technical feasibility study Theoretical problems Proof of concept versus implementation or performance specications Propose a solution to an outstanding problem Other projects approved by the Institute

Project Adviser:
The student shall have a project adviser who is a full-time faculty member of the UP EEE Department. If the student has a project co-adviser, the co-adviser shall be: Full-time faculty member of UP Full-time University Research Associate of the UP EEE Department Teaching Assistant of the UP EEE Department Lecturer of the UP EEE Department

Note: Only UP EEE faculty members are allowed to give grades.

Full-time member of an academic or research institution

Panel:
The panel is responsible for evaluating the performance of the student. It is composed of the adviser, a reader (faculty member) and the examiner. A panel will be assigned to a project at the start of the semester. The adviser and examiner would attend the half-way point and nal presentations.

Halfway-point:
The half-way point is scheduled midway through the semester. Its purpose is to compare the progress of the student with respect to the proposed schedule. It is also a venue where the adviser and advisee can propose modications (scope, schedule and nal deliverables) in the latter half of the semester. The advisee is required to submit a halfway-point project summary which is a 1-2 page document that should give an overview of the whole project. It should discuss the work done, current progress, the remaining tasks and known challenges that need to be overcome for the project to be completed. The adviser will decide on whether the advisee can continue the project based on the assessment of the advisees progress and capability to nish the project. The adviser and examiner will ll out an approval sheet stating the decision on whether the advisee can proceed or not with the project. The approval sheet would state the decision of the adviser and the examiner on whether the advisee can proceed or not and if a halfway-point presentation is needed. The advisee be required to present his/her work if deemed necessary by the panel. The halfway-point presentation is required if there are changes in the project denition, scope and deliverables. Appeals by the advisee regarding the decision of the panel on his or her project status should be coursed through the 198 handlers. The requirements in the halfway-point presentation are Slide presentation (the format will be discussed a few weeks before the presentations) Project demonstration should clearly show that the half-way point deliverables are achieved Complete Bi-Monthly Progress Report Submissions preceding the presentation date Halfway-Point Project Summary

Students who are not allowed to continue will be given a grade of 5.0. Passing the half-way point does not guarantee that the student will be given a passing grade in the nal presentation.

Final Presentation:
The students will present their accomplishments for the entire semester during the nal presentation. The requirements in the nal presentation are Slide presentation (Oral defense of project; the format will be discussed a few weeks before the presentations) Project demonstration should clearly show that the nal deliverables are achieved Complete Bi-Monthly Progress Report Submissions Reviewed rst draft of nal documentation Final Presentation Review Paper (IEEE Transaction Format in A4, max 6 pages with gures and references)

The nal presentation review paper should be a short paper that contains the project methodology, experiment results and analysis, and conclusion. This paper is NOT the nal short paper! The paper will be read by all members of the panel and will be used to evaluate the project. Students who fail to submit the reviewed rst draft of the nal documentation and/or the short review paper on or before the deadline will not be allowed to present their nal presentation.

Bi-Monthly Progress Reports:

Progress reports (IEEE Transaction format, max 4 pages including gures and references) duly approved by the advisers shall be submitted every two weeks by the students to the handlers. These short progress reports should give a summary of the following: 1. What was accomplished for the past two weeks? 2. What is being done at the present problems encountered? 3. What will be done next week to address the present problems? These reports are suggested in order to assess the students documentation skills and to identify points for improvement. The progress reports should not be limited to successes, but should also include failures and errors. The activities outlined in these progress reports should be in concurrence with the project Gantt chart. Note: Use your project title as the main title of your bi-monthly reports when uploading to the UP EEEI Open Journal System.

Final Requirements:
The following should be submitted before the student will be given a nal grade: At least one (1) bound copy of the approved nal documentation with signed title page (including the University Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) disclosure form), signed IPR permission page, and signed approval sheet. The nal documentation should bear the signatures of all project proponent/s, adviser/s, reader, and the institute director. The format of the cover for the bound documentation is as follows: Binding: Hardbound Color: Maroon Spine Label: should contain the following information in CAPITAL letters: Students / Students last name at the top Title of the 198 project running across the length of the spine Degree title Name of institution and year of completion Sample Spine Label:

At least four (4) CDs, each containing the following: approved version of the nal documentation color-scanned copy of the signed title page with the UP IPR disclosure form color-scanned copy of the signed IPR permission page color-scanned copy of the signed approval sheet source codes, if any editable nal short paper (in latex format) project manuals, if required electronic copies of the bi-monthly progress reports halfway and nal presentations slides (powerpoint format or equivalent in openoce)

Online submission of the nal documentation to the UP EEEI Open Journal System (OJS). four (4) paper copies of the signed title page with UP IPR disclosure form four (4) paper copies of the signed IPR permission page four (4) paper copies of the signed approval sheet

Online submission of the nal short paper (IEEE Transaction format in A4, 10 pages max) to the OJS.

Course Policies:
1. The proposal should include a measurable halfway point or milestone that is set by the student and adviser. The halfway point requirements must be adequately satised by mid-semester and shall be noted in the progress reports. 2. The project proposal should be approved during EEE 190. Students without approved project proposals should present on or before the last day of late registration. 3. The proposal should include a detailed Gantt chart. The corresponding percentage of the total work should be indicated in each major section of schedule. The Gantt chart will be used to determine the amount of work accomplished during the half-way and nal presentation.
A 4. All CoE/ECE/EE 198 documentations/papers are now required to be typeset in TEX/L TEX. Resource links A and TEX/L TEX document templates will be made available in UVLE.

5. All CoE/ECE/EE 198 online document submissions (in PDF) will be made through the UP EEEI Open Journal System (OJS). The current issue is available at http://eee.upd.edu.ph/journal/index.php/undergrad/issue/current. The link above is only accessible inside UP Diliman. You will need to log-in to access this page. 6. Please note that only the groups who have submitted all the requirements will be allowed to present their halfway-point and nal presentations. Those who have not submitted, or submitted late, any of the reports will need to write a letter to the EEEI Director requesting that they be allowed to present (and avoid an automatic failing grade). The letter must be noted and signed by the adviser/s and must state the reasons for failing to comply with the requirements. The letter of request, together with the pertinent requirements, must be submitted to the course handlers on or before the set deadline. 7. Presentation time allotments for the halfway-point and nal presentations (including demonstrations) are limited to (5N + 5) minutes per group, where N = number of persons in a group. After the presentation, there will be 5 minutes of Q&A. Attire is business casual. The presentation schedules will be posted in UVLE a few weeks before the presentations. 8. The time limits and schedule for project presentations shall be strictly enforced. Since members of a group may be graded individually, each member should get equal airtime during an oral presentation. 9. The adviser can recommend a grade of unocial drop anytime during the semester based on the following grounds: (a) Negligence resulting to destruction of equipment (b) Willful disregard of laboratory rules (c) Falsication or misrepresentation of data (d) Abandonment of the project 10. A student can incur a grade of 5.0 if he does not comply with one or more of the following conditions: (a) Submit or provide periodic progress reports to the adviser/s and/or handler/s (b) Meet the halfway point or milestone (c) Follow all course policies The list above does not exclude other possible reasons for getting grade of 5.0. Furthermore, complying with the above conditions does not by itself guarantee a passing grade. 11. Bi-monthly progress reports duly approved by the advisers shall be submitted regularly by the student to the handlers. These reports are suggested in order to assess the students documentation skills and to identify points for improvement. The progress reports should not be limited to successes, but should also include failures and errors. 12. The project documentation shall be read by the adviser and the reader. The nal project documentation shall have the signed approval of the adviser and reader. Documentation with a missing signature of the adviser or the reader will not be accepted. If the reader and the adviser are not satised with the quality (contents, readability, style, etc.) of the documentation, the student will be given a grade on INC (passing nal score) and should revise the documentation according to the recommendations of the reader and adviser. 13. The adviser can recommend to the panel to disallow his/her advisee to present the half-way point accomplishments and the student be given a grade of 5.0 if it is apparent that the student was not able to achieve the half-way point deliverables and/or fail to submit regular updates. If the request of the adviser has been granted, the student can submit an Appeal to Present to the institute director, channeled through the 198 handlers. The student should submit the appeal not later than 2 days after he/she was informed of the panels decision. 14. The adviser can recommend to the panel to disallow his/her advisee to make the nal presentation and the student be given a grade of 5.0 if it is apparent that the student was not able to achieve the nal deliverables and/or fail to submit regular updates. If the request of the adviser has been granted, the student can submit an Appeal to Present to the institute director, channeled through the 198 handlers. The student should submit the appeal no later than 2 days after he/she was informed of the panels decision. 4

Grading System:
After the nal presentation, the panel will convene to decide the nal grade. The student will be graded as follows: a.) The panel will decide if the student will get a passing grade, a 5.0, a 4.0, or an INC. b.) If the student passed, the grading scheme below will be followed. Panel Grade: The panel grade is subdivided as follows: Documentation (10%) To be given by the reader. 2.5% will be from the half-way point documentation while 7.5% will be from the rst draft of the nal documentation. The documentation will be graded based on readability, content, thoroughness, completeness and usage of technical writing techniques. Presentation skills, organization of topics and slides, Q&A, project demonstration. Technical merits of solutions (techniques, processes and tests) employed in solving the problem. Interpretation of data.

Presentation (10%)1

Methodology (10%)1

Results and Analysis (15%)1 Conclusion (5%)1

Summing up of the project. Demonstration of thorough understanding of the project and results. Recommendations.

Advisers Grade2 The adviser/s would give a grade based on the criteria enumerated above. The recommended percentages are as follows: Documentation Presentation Methodology Results and Analysis Conclusion Work Ethics (10%) (10%) (10%) (10%) (5%) (5%)

The following grading scale will be used to compute the nal grade: Range 92 - 100+ 88 - 91.99 84 - 87.99 80 - 83.99 76 - 79.99 Notes: A conditional grade of 4.0 may be given in cases where the student fails to complete the project and has no idea how to complete it or make it work. This is applicable only to cases where a signicant part of the project has been nished. The examination panel shall set a new deadline (short term) to allow the student to complete all requirements. Note that a grade of 4.0 must be resolved to a passing grade of 3.0 or a failing grade of 5.0. A grade of INC may be given if a student fails to complete the project, provided there is a good probability of success and the student knows how to solve the problem and complete the project in a deadline (short term) set by the panel. The grade of INC can be converted to a passing grade of 3.0 or better. UP Grade 1.00 1.25 1.50 1.75 2.00 Range 72 - 75.99 68 - 71.99 64 - 67.99 60 - 63.99 UP Grade 2.25 2.50 2.75 3.00

1 Given with equal weights by the non-advising members of the panel. For group projects, the students can be graded individually or as a group. 2 Given with equal weights by the advisers. For group projects, the students can be graded individually or as a group.
