Zhiming Guo Kristen Foster CO150, 403 15th Oct. 2013 The Total Effect of Tablet Computers on Education An Annotated Bibliography This annotated bibliography was written in order to explore the total effect of tablet computers especially iPads on education. I am interested in iPad because I am now aware that it can even be used for studying which opposed my initial thinkingiPads are only recreational tablet computers for playing. Furthermore, I will mainly focus on iPad because it has the largest share of tablet computer market. This topic is exigent because tablet computer is popular in the current society, nearly everyone owns it. Also, this topic is controversial due to the fact that many parents complain that their children spend too much time on tablet computers for playing. For my research, I tried to find the specific method of the effect of tablet computers both on students and teachers. My research questions posted in this article are: (1) What is the positive and negative influence of tablet computers on education? (2) Can tablet computers do more good than harm to education? I conducted this research during a one-week period at the beginning of October 14, 2013. The bibliography includes different sorts of sources, one of which is a peer-reviewed report published in popular journals. One peer-reviewed article comes from a well-reputed journal. The two remaining sources are news articles from two types of famous newspaper;

Helps, Dawn H., Tina S. Herzberg. The Use of an Ipad2 as a Leisure Activity for a Student with Multiple Disabilities." Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness 107.3 (2013): 232-236. Academic Search Premier. Web. May/June 2013. It is a peer-reviewed practical report intended for students and academics in the field of technology. The authors present a special case study of the research, which help a woman with multiple disabilities gain the independence by participating in desired leisure activities through iPad. Based on quotations, statistics, primary research and graphs, the authors acquire the conclusion of this experiment that the woman had learned the abilities to be involved in a preferred leisure activity, which indicates that the experiment does successfully apply to the participant.

The report is credible due to the following two reasons. Firstly, it is a peer-reviewed article published in May-June 2013, which validates the reliability. Secondly, the authors use complete procedure including pre-research, task analysis and baseline data elaborately designed to this student, which makes the report persuasive. However, one limitation is that the authors only focus on one participant, which cant be well-grounded due to lack of enough samples.

This article helps my first research question by providing academic research of what the positive effect of iPad. Also, it proves that the disabled people can shape their individualization by using iPads.

Manuguerra, Maurizio, Peter Petocz. Promoting Student Engagement by Integrating New Technology into Tertiary Education: The Role of the iPad. Asian Social Science 7.11(2012): 61-65. Web. 16 Oct. 2013 It is a scholarly article written for academics, teachers and students. The authors point out the thesis that iPad is significantly useful for students and teachers. Personal experiences, quotation, statistics and students comments are included in this article. Based on investigation, they successfully support their thesis by following points. Firstly, the full-time and part-time students increase their engagements and interests in academic performance by using iPads. Also, iPads are effective for professors in marking assignments and making lectures more understandable.

Several factors contribute to the credibility of this source. Firstly, it was published in a scholarly journal, which proves the credibility. Secondly, this article provides enough evidence to compare the changes in before-and-after situation of using iPads, which makes the article more reliable. One limitation is that it lacks evidence to illustrate why iPads are more useful than laptops.

This article provides enough evidence to help me find out the positive effect of iPads in improving the efficiency of teaching and learning. The article gives me information that it is necessary to popularize iPads among teachers and student.

Richtel, Matt. Technology Changing How Students Learn, Teachers Say. The New York Times.com. The New York Times, 1 Nov 2012. Web. 20 Oct. 2013. Its a news article posted on a famous newspaper website, the New York Times, which is intended for parents, teachers and particularly students. Matt Richtel states the thesis that the attentions of students are distracted and their ability to face up difficult tasks are hampered by technology. The article includes comments of teachers, statistics, interviews and surveys. Richtel uses the following points to serve for his thesis. Firstly, teachers find that they are in difficulty capturing the students attention, which results students grades declined. Secondly, because of the high concentration on electronic products, students behavior and brains are more possible changed by technology.

In regard to credibility, I have two points to prove it. At first, the article was published in the New York Time, a famous newspaper, which validates its authenticity. It was also published in November of 2012, which makes it pretty recent. One limitation is that the article focuses on side effects of technology that is a larger area than my focus of tablet computers, which makes the source a little bit inaccurate.

The article helps my research question in regard to the negative effect of tablet computers on students. It also gives me information that the teachers and students who are stakeholders should treat tablet computers with caution.

Sullivan, Bob. Students can't resist distraction for two minutes ... and neither can you. NBC News.com. NBC News, 18 May 2013. Web. 21 Oct. 2013 It is a news article intended for teachers, students, office workers. This article includes quotations, statistics and studies from others. Bob Sullivan states the thesis that people may be easily interrupted by electronic devices when they are doing their multitasking. Sullivan uses two studies support the thesis. One of the studies suggests that people who are controlled score 20 percent higher than people interrupted by electronic devices on a standard cognition test (Sullivan 1). The other one found that test-takers cannot concentrate on work over two minutes even on their best behavior due to using electronic devices to write emails or looking through social media.

The source is credible because it was published in a famous news websiteNBC News, which validates its credibility. Also, the article was published on May 18, 2013, which is quite recent. One limitation is that the author doesnt give me an affirmative answer to the thesis due to the some limitation of technology.

This source effectively helps my second research question. It inspires my preliminary recognition that tablet computers may do more harm than good because of the potentially negative influence on users behavior and brains. For the relevant stakeholderstablet computer users especially office workers and students, they should use this electronic devices properly.
