ECED 243 Objectives for Wheels Unit 1.

Matching: Identify and match the color of the wheels with the correct color of each bicycle. Objective/Foundation: A child will verbally identify and place each wheel on the correct color of each bicycle. M.5.23 Identify similarities and differences in objects. 2. Classification: Sort the buttons, pasta wheels, pennies, etc. into groups of likeness using the cups provided. Objective/Foundation: A child will group the items by similarities. M.5.12 Identify when objects are similar. 3. Memory: Find pairs of matching tricycles, bicycles, motorcycles by turning over two picture cards. If the two cards that are turned over do not match, turn the cards over face down and try again by turning over different cards. Repeat until all pairs have been found. Objective: A child will follow the simple rules of the activity while finding pairs of matching picture cards. SE.4.46 Follow rules for simple games and activities.

4. Creativity: Pour a small amount of paint into provided containers. Dip macaroni wheels into the paint and stamp onto paper. Objective: A child will use the macaroni wheels and paints to create an original work of art. FA.1.69 Use a variety of materials (e.g.,crayons, paint, clay, markers) to create original work. 5. Discrimination: Match the colored picture of the vehicles with their correct shadow. Objective: A child will use their visual perception skills to match the colored pictures with the shadow pictures. M.6.12 Identify when objects are the same. 6. Literacy: Look and listen to the story Wheel Away. Then identify parts of the bike and tools that are pictured on the first page of the book. Objective: A child will look and listen to the story and then identify parts of a bicycle/tools when asked by an adult. ELA.3.32 Name objects from a picture book.

7. Science: With help from an adult, a group of children will construct a ramp using materials provided and watch how fast and far a car goes down the ramp. Change angle of ramp or type of car to see the difference in speed and distance. Objective: A child will witness the effect of height and mass in relation to speed and distance by constructing ramps at different angles and using different types of cars. SC.1.71 Engage in a scientific experiment with a peer or with small groups of children using sharing/turn taking skills.

8. Direction: Give a child(ren) a car and ask the child(ren) to steer the car in different directions such as forward, backward, sideways (left or right), etc. One can also use simple objects to place in the path of the child such as a block or toy buildings and say turn left when you come to the red barn, turn right when you get to the castle. Objective: A child will identify which direction they are going by turning their car the correct way when asked to go forward, backward, etc. SS.3.77 Move in directions on command (e.g.,forward, backward, sideways).

9. Fine Motor: Using tweezers and the round items provided, place the items in the different compartments of the tray. Objective: A child will use their fine motor skills to move round objects from one place to the other with tweezers. P.5.3 Uses fingers of two hands to complete activities. 10. Gross Motor: Set up a course using the cones provided and have children zig-zag through cones with the scooters. Objective: A child will use their bodies to move the scooters around the cones. They can lay on their stomachs and propel forward with their hands or sit on the board and use their feet and hands. P.3.10 Use objects as tools. 11. Hand/Eye Coordination: Have a child roll a car into a parking spot on the circle provided. Objective: A child will use their hand/eye skills to manipulate a car into a parking spot. P.4.2 Releases objects with control.

12. Cooperation: Revised version of Red Light/ Green Light The children will push a car across the floor in response to the Red/Green commands. At the start, all the children form a line about 15 feet away from the stoplight. The stoplight faces away from the line of kids and say green light. At this point the children will push their car toward the stoplight. At any point, the stoplight may say red light and turn around. If any of the kids are caught moving their car toward the stoplight after this has happened, they are out. Play resumes when the stoplight turns back around and says green light. The stoplight wins if all the kids are out before anyone is able to touch him or her. Otherwise, the first player to touch the stoplight wins the game, and is stoplight for the next game. Objective: A child will abide by the rules of the game. SE.5.93 Participate in games and follow the rules. 13. Seriation: Organize wheels in order from smallest to biggest Objective: A child will use their visual skills to identify the order of the wheels by size, Smallest to biggest. M.5.14 Order three objects by size.

14. One to One: Count the number of wheels and place the correct number symbol next to the wheels. Objective: A child will count the wheels using their finger for tracking, then identify the correct number symbol and place it next to the wheels. M.1.37 Apply one-to-one correspondence with objects and people. 15. Social Studies: using carpet map and cars to discover different landmarks of a town; i.e. fire station, police station, post office, school, etc. Objective: A child will use the cars to explore different places all over the carpet map. SS.3.2 Become familiar with the idea that maps help people locate themselves in space.
