Using the show compress Command with the Hardware Compression Module
Document ID: 9345

Introduction
This document explains how to interpret the output displayed by the show compress command when hardware compression is enabled (that is, when you implement compression in the Compression Service Adapter [CSA] hardware).

Hardware and Software Versions

The information in this document is based on the software and hardware versions below. Recommended Minimum Cisco IOS Software Release Cisco 7000 and 7500 Cisco IOS release 11.1(6)CA or a later release of series with VIP240 (=) Cisco IOS release 11.1CA. Cisco 7000 and 7500 Cisco IOS Release 11.1(14)CA or a later release series with VIP250 (=) of Cisco IOS release 11.1CA. Cisco 7204 and Cisco Cisco IOS Release 11.1(6)CA or a later release of 7206 routers Cisco IOS release 11.1CA. For multiple CSA support in Cisco IOS Release 11.1(8)CA1 or later. The show compress Command

In order to see what the show compress command does, let's look at some sample output:
Router#show compress Serial6/1 Hardware compression enabled CSA in slot3 in use Compressed bytes sent: 402 bytes 0 Kbits/sec ratio: 4.092 Compressed bytes recv: 390 bytes 0 Kbits/sec ratio: 3.476 restarts:1 last clearing of counters: 1278 seconds

Field Definitions
The information displayed here by the show compress command is the same for both hardware and distributed compression. For Cisco 7200 series routers with multiple CSAs, an additional line is displayed to indicate the CSA currently in use. Definition Serial6/1 Name and number of the interface. Hardware compression enabled Type of compression. Identifies the CSA that is performing a CSA in slot3 in use compression service. Total number of compressed bytes sent Compressed bytes sent including the kilobits per second. Total number of compressed bytes Compressed bytes recv received including the kilobits per second. Compression ratio for bytes sent and ratio received since the link last came up or since the counters were last cleared. Number of times the compression process restarts restarted or reset. Duration since the last time the counters last clearing of counters were cleared with the clear counters command. Field
