By SHANNON SADLER
The Sun
Almost synonymous with the
holiday season, the Pennsylvania
Ballet is set to kick off its annual
production of George Balan-
chine's The Nutcracker. Bring-
ing a local flair to the production
will be 10-year-old Jane Cohen, a
Moorestown resident and student
at Moorestown Upper Elemen-
tary School, who just last week
was selected to play the lead role
of Marie.
We were floored, father Greg
Cohen said. Shes very expres-
sive and that role is for someone
who can really connect.
Greg said that his daughter
began ballet at 3 years old, as she
began taking classes at the
Perkins Center for the Arts in
Moorestown.
We enrolled her into Perkins
and she really took to dance,
Greg said. She just really had a
love for it.
Yet, Greg said, after awhile,
they began to look into other bal-
let schools, eventually enrolling
Jane into the Barbara Sandonato
School of Ballet.

The Moorestown Sun
Ushering in the holiday season,
the Moorestown Community
House is gearing up to kick-off
the first-ever tree lighting cere-
mony within the town.
The first Tree Lighting Cele-
bration will take place on Dec. 2 at
5:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the
Community House.
This has been an ongoing ef-
fort for the better part of the last
six to 10 months, said resource
assistant for the Moorestown
Community House Amanda Park.
Park explained that the event
came out of the Moorestown
Community House Board of
Trustees Community Outreach
Committee.
The board looked at the Com-
munity House and looked at the
seasons to see what hole in the
calendar they could fill, Park
said.
The event will culminate in the
lighting of a 20-foot Norway
Spruce, donated by Pete Palko in
memory of his mother and plant-
ed by Depenbrock Design, Inc.,
and the lighting of a 10-foot-tall
menorah, which was built and do-
nated by the Moorestown Jewish
Association.
In addition, the Moorestown
Jewish Association will also be
actively participating in the event
on Dec. 2.
Festivities will include live
music provided by the
Moorestown High School Madri-
gals, hot chocolate donated by
Brandywine Senior Living at
Moorestown Estates and cookies
donated by Wegmans.
We are proud to bring this
new tradition to the community,
Moorestown Community House
Board of Trustees president
George Schulmann said. The

E
very year, on Nov. 11, our coun-
try celebrates Veterans Day.
America has been honoring its
veterans around this date, in some
fashion, by some name, since 1919
the one-year anniversary of the
armistice of World War I, then known
as The Great War.
Fighting stopped between the Allied
nations and Germany on the 11th hour
of the 11th day of the 11th month in
1918. President Woodrow Wilson pro-
claimed Nov. 11 as the first commemo-
ration of Armistice Day a year later.
In 1938, the government passed an
act that made Nov. 11 an official holi-
day dedicated to the cause of world
peace and to be thereafter celebrated
and known as Armistice Day. In 1954,
after World War II and the Korean
War, Congress revised the act, replac-
ing the word Armistice with the
word Veterans.
The remembrance shifted to Oct. 25
in 1971 after some governmental con-
fusion, but was returned officially to
Nov. 11 by President Gerald Ford in
1975.
The name and date of what is now
known as Veterans Day may have
changed in the 94 years since the first
celebration, but the spirit has not.
Veterans Day commemorations are
held throughout the country, and our
local region does an excellent job of
paying homage to the servicemen and
servicewomen who have served, and
are still serving, to protect our free-
doms.
These men and women of the
Armed Forces past and present risk
their lives, day in and day out, so that
we can live the lives we enjoy today in
America. They risk their lives, day in
and day out, so that we can live better
lives in the future. They risk their
lives, day in and day out, so that people
around the world can hopefully live a
life that is free like ours.
Fighting for freedom is not always a
popular choice, and it may be debat-
able, at times, whether its even the
right choice. But that does not, and
should not, take away from the people
who serve to protect our country.
Hopefully, you commemorated Vet-
erans Day in some fashion. And hope-
fully, youll continue to honor our vet-
erans throughout the year.
in our opinion
Honor our veterans
With Veterans Day over, our support for those who serve should not stop
Your thoughts
How did you commemorate Veterans
Day this year? How can we continue to
honor the servicemen and service-
women throughout the year?
The Moorestown Home and School Asso-
ciation will be holding its annual Turkey
and Pie Drive on Monday, Nov. 25. A time-
honored tradition, the drive provides more
than 150 complete Thanksgiving meals to
Moorestown families and charitable organ-
izations.
Home and School, student and parent
volunteers, along with guidance coun-
selors, nurses, principals and teachers par-
ticipate in the group effort of solicitation,
collection, assembly and delivery of meal
components. In addition to a turkey and
pie, recipients are provided with all sorts of
fixings for traditional side dishes and bev-
erages.
Frozen turkeys or breasts (up to 15
pounds) and fresh pies will be collected at
three locations: Maple Dawson Park
(across from Baker school) from 7:30 to 11
a.m., WAMS from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and the
UES, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please consid-
er donating, as the need grows greater
every year.

wrapped toys at the companys sales offices

Weichert employees at the companys
corporate headquarters in Morris Plains,
as well as in other company locations
throughout the United States, will also par-
ticipate in the yearly community service
event. To date, the annual toy drive has

Burlington County Clerk Tim
Tyler announced that his office
will be the first in the state to im-
plement a new document han-
dling process that will drastical-
ly reduce turnaround in record-
ing and verifying the critical in-
formation on deeds, mortgages
and other documents submitted
for recording.
Those who typically bring
documents to the clerks office for
recording will definitely notice
and appreciate the accelerated
recording, Tyler said. The tim-
ing for this couldnt be more criti-
cal. The real estate market is
clearly on the upswing, and I an-
ticipate we will be recording
40,000 more documents that the
78,000 we handled in 2012.
Revenues from recording a
large portion of which will go to-
ward the county budget and help
reduce taxes will also increase
significantly by years end, Tyler
said. We anticipate total rev-
enues of more than $6.5 million,
or about $1.5 million more than
last year.
The new system, called double
key verification, employs an
electronic verification process,
which checks documents for such
key information as names, land
identification, document type and
page count. Currently, the clerks
office relies on in-person sight
verification.
To put it another way, Tyler
said, The amount of time that is
required for recordings will be
significantly reduced by allowing
technology to verify documents.
We will have the flexibility to
shift employee job duties from
verification to recording docu-
ments as needed, Tyler said.
This ability to change employee
workloads will be extremely effec-
tive especially now in response to
the current increases in record-
ings.
A contract was awarded by
freeholders to AMCAD of Hern-
don, VA to implement the new
system, at a cost of 70 cents per
document. This cost is offset by
statutory user fees that the clerks
office receives from its recording
services.

document handling process for records

bodies all that the Community
House stands for, in that it creates
a new memory and further bonds
people and families to each other
and to our town.
In addition, warm clothing and
non-perishable food will be col-
lected by Moorestown Home and

port MooreKids and the
Moorestown Ministerium Food
Pantry operated by Saint
Matthew Lutheran Church.
Its not just turning on the
lights of a menorah or a Christ-
mas tree, but also to give back to
the community, Park said.
All collections will take place
inside the Community Houses
clubroom.
I could not be happier with
the positive response that I have
heard from people all over town,
trustee and Tree Lighting Com-
mittee chair Laurie Palko said.
As well, many groups have heard
about it and called us directly to
see how they could get involved.
Spreading the news around
town, Park said that members
have already begun distributing
posters and flyers around the
schools, as well as even hanging a
banner across Main Street.
The word is getting out there
and people are hearing about it,
she said.
The lighting of both the tree
and the menorah will take place
at 6:15 p.m. and be broadcast live
by CBS 3. Following the lighting,
Santa is also slated to make an ap-
pearance while riding on a fire

Sandonato founded the school
by the Pennsylvania Ballets first
member in 1963, according to
Pennsylvania Ballets website.
Greg said the school was one of
the selected pre-professional
dance schools, in which the Penn-
sylvania Ballet would audition
for the productions child cast.
Jane then made her debut in
The Nutcracker for the first
time at 8 years old. Greg ex-
plained the restriction was due to
labor laws in Pennsylvania.
Thats the youngest theyre al-
lowed to perform, Greg said.
In her first appearance in The
Nutcracker, Jane played both an
angel and a bunny, and played
both an angel and a grandchild
the year after.
Unlike past years, Greg said
the audition process for the child
cast had changed, following the
opening of the Pennsylvania Bal-
lets own school. What was once a
daylong audition has now
changed into a scouting period
encompassing several weeks.
It was a longer process, ap-
proximately four weeks, Greg
said.
Instead of hosting auditions
from the select schools, Greg said
the Pennsylvania Ballet now
chooses from its own students,
one of whom being Jane who
joined the school since Sandonato
closed her school when the Penn-
sylvania Ballet opened its own.
Greg explained that, at first,
the school had sent home a notice,
announcing it would be evaluat-
ing students for potential roles in
The Nutcracker and later a ten-
tative list of students being con-
sidered for roles in the produc-
tion.
Originally Jane was being con-
sidered for three roles. Greg said
it was only recently that they
learned that Jane had landed the

Dr. Jeffrey Morton, a
Moorestown periodontist, pre-
sented a guest lecture for senior
dental hygiene students at
Burlington County College on
Thursday, Oct. 24. Morton
brought real-world periodontal
surgical concepts into Eileen
Morrisseys Periodontology II
class.
The students enjoy him. He
rapid fires questions, challenging
them and stimulating them with
new, as well as tried and true con-
cepts about periodontal disease
and its treatment. We love having
him here, said Morrissey.
Morton has donated his time
each year, for the past eight years,
to speak to BCCs dental hygiene
students. Periodontists specialize
in the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of diseases affecting
the supporting and surrounding
tissues and structures of the
teeth.
It is so inspiring that he was
actually a hygienist before he be-
came a periodontist, said BCC
dental hygiene student Alyssa
Ryba.
Morton is a former member of
the Board of the Burlington
County chapter of the American
Red Cross, the treasurer of the
New Jersey Society of Periodon-
tists, president of the Burlington
County Dental Study Group and
an assistant clinical professor of
periodontology at the University
of Pennsylvania School of Dental
Medicine.

in dangerous activities.
Moorestown volunteers offer
their hearts and hands on the Fri-
day of Thanksgiving week to host
a popular flag football tourna-
ment to benefit Camden youth,
Joe Ehrline, MCWC founder said.
We are able to host a tourna-
ment for over 1,000 players due to
unwavering support from local
businesses all with the goal to
help the Boys & Girls Club of
Camden County carry out its edu-
cational, social and recreational

lead role as Marie.
Currently, Jane attends ballet
school three times a week for an
hour and a half per day on top of
rehearsal, which also runs three
days during the week.
Greg credited Janes determi-
nation for her accomplishments,
as he explained that landing the
part of Marie is something she
had set her sights on long ago.
Back when Jane was only 6
years old, Greg had taken her to
see The Nutcracker and
through a friend was allowed to
tour backstage with her. While
backstage, Greg recalled Janes
excitement as she climbed into
the boat used during the show
and how at such a young age, she
expressed aspirations to play
Marie from that day on.
It was her trajectory, Greg
said. When she sets her sight on
something, she gets it.
Now four years later, Janes as-
pirations remain the same.
Im excited about a lot of
things, but mostly the boat, Jane
said.
Jane also added that she is ex-
cited to be in a lead role and be on
stage alone for the first time.
Its different, because for the
last two years, the other Maries
are the ones I looked up to, Jane
said.
Jane added that while she does-
nt think shell ever teach ballet
in the future, she would like to be-
come a professional ballet dancer
for a few years before eventually
pursuing a career in astro-
physics.

our young students the great his-
tory of our school, said Lower
School Director Kelly Goula. We
are proud of our dedicated and
talented faculty, as well as our
many predecessors.
Moorestown Friends School is
home to one of the oldest kinder-
gartens in the United States. Al-
though the school as a whole was
established in 1785, the kinder-
garten program was not added
until the fall of 1883. This was
about 10 years before American
public schools began integrating
kindergarten on a national level,
and 10 years before the establish-
ment of the International Kinder-
garten Union (only 6 percent of
American kindergarten-aged
children attended kindergarten
in 1900).
Rachel L. Rogers and her assis-
tant Sarah Wilson were the first
kindergarten teachers at MFS.
Rogers studied under a famous
pioneer of the Kindergarten
Movement, Madame Maria
Kraus-Boelte, who herself was a
disciple of Friedrich Froebel
the German pedagogue who in-
vented the concept of kinder-
garten (childrens garden) in
the 19th century.
The Moorestown Friends
School kindergarten program is
also notable for one of its earliest
alumni, Alice Paul, who was one
of 11 students enrolled in the
kindergarten class in 1891. Later
known as one of the countrys
leading advocates for womens
rights, Alice Paul graduated from
Moorestown Friends School in
1901.
Today the schools Beginnings
at MFS program enrolls 87 stu-
dents in preschool, prekinder-
garten, and kindergarten. In ad-
dition to core instruction in lan-
guage arts and mathematics, stu-
dents take classes in art, music,
science, Spanish, physical educa-
tion, and Quaker/Religious Edu-
cation, all taught by professionals
in those fields. Learning is very
hands-on and students, read,
write, ask questions, interview
experts, conduct experiments,
take field trips and share their
learning.
The program for the birthday
party will begin promptly at 10:15
a.m.
Program includes:

The Moorestown Turkey Trot
is coming Thursday, Nov. 28,
Thanksgiving morning.
This is a fun community out-
ing that drew more than 1,000 peo-
ple last year. It is a great way to
get ready for all the food later in
the day, and a good way to connect
with friends and neighbors.
Like last year, this is a low-key
race without timing. The good
news is the entry fee is only $10,
everyone gets a prize for finish-
ing, and there is free food.
All proceeds go to the
Moorestown Cross Country
teams. This year the teams will
donate $1,000 of the proceeds to
the Orkeeswa Running Club a
school in Tanzania.
Sign up online at
RunSignUp.com or Facebook, at
the Moorestown Running Compa-
ny, or register the morning of the
race.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m.,
the One Mile Fun Run is at 9:15
a.m. and the 5K is at 9:45 a.m.

If you are looking for a well built home that will stand the
test of time, with unmatched attention to detail, look no
further! Very rarely do you come across a home of this
caliber with rare wood throughout the home, as well as
many stained glass windows. You would spend an
exorbitant amount of money to match what already exists
in this stately residence. The beauty of the home continues
on the private exterior with grounds that have been cared
for by a master gardener, a slate roof (that's right a SLATE
ROOF!!), the exterior wood under the eaves and the brick
work on the chimney. This one of a kind home awaits your
gatherings, holiday parties, and memories yet to be made.
