Unit details CHEM2002 Physical and Analytical Chemistry [UG]

Credit Availability Details for new undergraduate courses Content 6 points Semester 2 (see Timetable) Level 2 core unit in the Physical specialisation in the Chemistry major sequence Category B broadening unit for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Design students Level 2 elective This unit is compulsory for all students taking the physical/analytical specialisation of the Chemistry major. It builds on the foundation of core chemical principles and experimental techniques provided in CHEM2001 Core Chemical Concepts and Techniques. More advanced concepts and techniques in chemical kinetics (including reaction mechanisms, chain reactions, polymerisation reactions and collision theory) and thermodynamics (including the phase rule) are presented. A more detailed description is given of atomic spectroscopy and energy levels, and introductory electrochemical principles and techniques are covered. Students understand principles and concepts related to (1) the structure of matter at an atomic and molecular level; (2) reaction mechanisms, complex reactions and theories of chemical kinetics; (3) advanced thermodynamics; and (4) introductory electrochemistry. Students acquire basic practical skills in (1) the operation of instrumentation; (2) techniques of data analysis; and (3) the interpretation of experimental measurements and the evaluation of their reliability. Students further their skills development in scientific writing, problem solving, critical analysis and teamwork, as well as more advanced research skills specific to the discipline. This is achieved through a combination of practical class experimentation, written assignments including an essay, and information retrieval from a variety of sources including libraries, databases and the World Wide Web. Assessment This comprises six laboratory sessions during the semester (30 per cent), quizzes and/or assignments (20 per cent) and a final two-hour examination (50 per cent). Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. Location Mode Unit rules Contact hours UWA (Crawley) on-campus Prerequisites: CHEM2001 Core Chemical Concepts and Techniques or CHEM2210 Structure Determination and Physical Chemistry Incompatibility: CHEM2220 Analytical and Physical Chemistry lectures: 2 hrs per week; labs: 6 hrs per week (for 6 weeks)

Outcomes

The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.

All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops. Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. See the Bookshop Text List Search page at http://www.coopbookshop.com.au/bookshop/action/DataSubjSelect. Where texts are listed in the unit description above, an asterisk (*) indicates that the book is available in paperback.
