Hi there--This is a general guide to the software included in this CD with notes on the improvements and corrections made since

the first edition. You can find a detailed description of the software in Chapter 17 of the book. 1. Languages and Units There are three copies of every program except for the carbon dioxide control program. Two copies are intended to support both ! and "nglish #nits. The third copy is a panish version of the ! programs. The program names including $ %&'( are in spanish) the names including $"ng( and $ !( use "nglish and ! units respectively. 2. The CD: Contents and Structure

A. Visual Basic and DOS so t!are:

Air "u#p 2.$ !ncludes the revamped &ir %ump program done over in *isual +asic. Air "u#p 2.$ !ith graph !ncludes an even newer version of the &ir %ump with a new added feature that graphs the air flow of the system vs. the water flow of the system. ',T"- .hen using this program in a .indows /000 or "xcel /000 1and above2 system) the computer may prompt you about $3uery 4efresh.( !f you check the box that says $&utomatically enable 5uery refresh for all workbooks and never show this warning again( and then click $"nable 3uery 4efresh)( the program should run without problems. Car%on Dio&ide Control The original Carbon Dioxide Control program. L'O !ncludes the original 6H, program and its ! counterpart

B. (&cel Spreadsheets:
Cost Anal)sis 2.$ !ncludes the newer version of the Cost &nalysis spreadsheet) which is intended to be more user-friendly when obtaining input. *ish Tan+ Design !ncludes the original 7ish Tank Design program and its ! counterpart O&)gen Design !ncludes the original ,xygen Design spreadsheet and its ! counterpart "ipe *lo! Design !ncludes the original %ipe 7low Design spreadsheet and its ! counterpart ,. -otes concerning certain progra#s Using the L'O progra# The only trick to the 6H, program is that the little file called 8default.txt8 9or a variation of this: ;# T be in the same location as the program file to work. .e have placed these files with the programs in the correct folders.

DOS Based "rogra#s 2 The computer ;# T be configured in the .indows ,perating ystem as follows- The numbers must have a $dot( as decimals and a $comma( as thousand separators. Calculating the "o!er .nput in the Air "u#p progra# The power input that is presented in the output screen of the &ir %ump program is a TH",4"T!C&6 value that is calculated under the assumptions of the pump working at optimum conditions and with the whole system tweaked perfectly to support such performance. +eing a solely theoretical value) it is well below any actual power consumption measurements. & better estimate of the actual value of power was obtained by making power consumption a function of depth and air flow. #sing the assumption that power consumption < 0 . when air flow < 0 C7; and depth <0 meters and data from different blowers used in con=unction with airlift pumps) we calculated the data>s regression. These statistics demonstrated that there was no statistical significance to the correlation to depth) perhaps because the blower consumes the same amount of power at all depths 1though depth thus influence how much air you are moving) this is independent of the power used2. #tili?ing the coefficient associated with air flow and the data from the blowers) we estimated the power output and plotted the following empirical graphs 1see below2.
