Student Practice Schedule

**Suggest recording yourself practice** Warm Up: 10 Minutes Long tones: 5 minutes Think about full deep breaths, good embouchure, and relaxed body. Listen for pitch and intonation. Keep the tone even and work on developing a full sound. Scales: 5 minutes Practice major scales in all keys. Start with the ones that you know for the rst 5 minutes. Concentrate on playing an even tempo. Articulate the notes purposefully. Break: 1 minute Technique: 5-10 minutes (from I Recommend, by James D. Ployhar) Scales (Major, Minors, Dim, Etc.) Chromatics Intervals (Major and Minor 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths) Arpeggios (Major and Minor Triads, 7ths, Diminished, Augmented, etc.) Reading/General Practice ***Work on areas that you feel you need to improve on. No need to work on everything, select areas, or little bit of each. Should be 20 minutes or more. Take breaks when you need them*** Sight Reading: Play through any new material and sight reading books like: 1. Top Tones for Trumpet, Walter Smith 2. Universal Method for Saxophone, Paul Deville 3. Sixty Selected Studies For Trombone, C Kopprasch 4. etc There is an emphasis on playing without stopping, even if mistakes are made. Class Pieces: Play songs that are being worked on in class. Select areas of the songs that are difcult and circled. Play through them slowly, picking up in speed as the part becomes more familiar. To play through the entire piece play along with a recording of the score Listen to and imitate articulation, dynamics, and the phrasing that is done one the professional recording.

Jazz Theory and Improvisation: Play through !combo" songs along with rhythm section on iReal B, Band in the Box, or Aebersold Recordings. Write out the arpeggios to the chord structure of the song. Practice playing only 3rds and 7ths through the form along with the rhythm section. Play arpeggios through !combo" songs along with rhythm section. Improvise under parameters, land on the 3rd or 7th at the beginning of each bar, every second bar, or every four bars. Improvise in between parameters. Complete improvisation. Play tastefully. Transcription Choose a solo or melody that you would like to learn by ear. Use existing slow downers such as The Amazing Slowdowner to slow down songs but keep the same pitch. Mimic what is played on your instrument Commit it to memory and play it at tempo Transcribe the solo/song, (write it down) Practice playing the melody or !licks" from the solo in all keys. Play/Finish Play whatever you want to play. Have fun. Leave your instrument feeling positive # # Evaluation/Reection Mentally or physically run through the given playing rubric. Think back, or listen to the recording of yourself practising. What did you do well? What do you need to improve? What do you need to work on next time?
