Lifeskill or Life-long Guideline of the week: Integrity

Math rd 3 - This week in math we are continuing our unit on multiplication. This week we will be exploring arrays, or items arranged in equal columns and rows. We will also be looking for patterns in a table of data and developing our mathematical thinking through multiplication games. *Talk with your child about arrays they see in the world around them tiles on the floor, panes on a window, etc. Ask them to name the dimensions of the array and to figure out the area of the amount of objects that make up the array. 4 - Students will explore the idea of multiplication through arrays and the multiplication chart. Students will use arrays (a gridded rectangle) as a model for multiplication and to become more familiar with multiplication pairs. Students will also be learning two array games that will help reinforce skip counting as well as combining smaller arrays to make larger ones. Finally, at the end of the week, students will make their own multiplication chart using arrays as a guide. *Ask your child to explain what an array is. Which numbers is he or she finding all the arrays for? How does he or she know when they have found all the arrays for a number? Earth Science Students are learning about different forces that affect the surface of the earth. This week students will explore the concepts of weathering, erosion, and deposition through reading, demonstrations, models and short film clips. Students will also learn how both rapid and slow changes affect the earths surface by creating landforms. *Ask your child to explain the difference between weathering, erosion and deposition to you. At the end of the week, ask him or her about landforms that form rapidly, and those that form slowly.

Journey of the Heart This week and next students will be listening to picture books around the theme of journey. Each picture book is different in the tale it tells, but within each story is a journey; either physical or emotional, sometimes both. Students will also be looking at character traits, writing paragraphs and making claims using evidence from the text as to which traits he or she feels the main character exhibits. *Ask your child about which stories about journeys he or she has liked so far. Which story stood out to him or her, and why? Super Wonderful Words Review these words with your child this week. Ask him or her to explain the meaning of the words to you by showing you the movements, or explaining the lesson on each word. relentlessly [ri lent_lis le] steady and persistent; without stopping procession [pr! sesh_!n] a group of persons, vehicles, or objects moving along in an orderly, formal manner; a parade solemn [sol_!m] deeply serious Important Notes and Events! *Published persuasive papers are due Friday, November 15 morning to the turn in basket. Please check in with your child to see where he or she is in the publishing process. *Third graders will go to the performance of the Nutcracker at the th Long Center on December 10 .
