YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM BENEFITS FROM FUNDS RAISED BY HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION As part of its ongoing Community Heroes Campaign, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) recently presented a check in the amount of $250 to Youthbuild, a program sponsored by the Troy Commission on Economic Opportunity. Each month, HRCCU chooses a local not-for-profit community organization and donates five dollars for each new member that joins or existing member that upgrades a service. To date, HRCCU has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each others success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through their homebuilding and other community service. At exit, they are placed in college, jobs, or both. Hudson River Community Credit Unions mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and Cohoes. The Credit Union is a not-forprofit financial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or businesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family members are eligible to join the credit union. HMS PINAFORE- The Greenwich Central School Junior Drama Club will be presenting Gilbert and Sullivans HMS Pinafore on Friday, November 15th and Saturday, November 16th. Both performances will take place at 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. H.M.S. PINAFORE is a hilarious operetta from the famous team of Gilbert and Sullivan. The story takes place aboard the British ship H.M.S. Pinafore where a navy captains daughter, Josephine, falls in love with a lower-class sailor instead of her fathers choice, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. This charming story pokes fun at the Royal Navy, parliamentary politics and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. H.M.S. PINAFORE is filled with memorable music and a surprise twist. The cast includes Chloe Littell as Buttercup, Daniel Brierley as Sir Joseph, Delaney Vogelien as Josephine, Ryan Brownell as Ralph, Jaimie Gaskell as the Captain, Kristen Cain as Dick Deadeye, Blythe Kelleher as Victoria, Mia Taylor as Elizabeth, Olivia Snell as Felicity, Rosie Maguire as Sarah, Devin Drew as Bob, Garrett Haynes as Bill and many more 7th, 8th and 9th grade students. The show is directed by Mr. Richard Cherry, with assistance from Mrs. Sarah Moses. HMS Pinafore is a wonderful showcase of the incredible student talent at Greenwich Central School and promises to be a fabulous family event, fun for all ages. Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and senior citizens. Pre-school children are free of charge. Tickets will be available at the door. Advance tickets are on sale at the High School Main Office or can be reserved by calling 6929542 ext. 6300.

CONCERT On Saturday, November 16th at 8pm Seventy Main, Greenwich, NY will be hosting a concert featuring renowned mandolinist Don Julin with the dynamic guitar playing of Billy Strings. They play traditional American string band music with energy levels usually associated with extreme sports. A typical set includes haunting Appalachian songs, righteous gospel standards, and blazing bluegrass instrumentals. Honoring the musical traditions of Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, and Jimmy Martin, these boys will take you back to that high lonesome sound of yesterdays bluegrass. No super-slick Nashpop here. This is your grandaddys bluegrass delivered with a pedal to the metal intensity of a moonshine runner. Doors open at 7:30! Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door and can be purchased online at seventymain.com There will also be an instrumental workshop featuring Don Julin, who is also the Author of Mandolin For Dummies from 2 to 4pm earlier in the afternoon. This is a two hour workshop that will feature specific techniques about how to improve your ability to improvise with more confidence utilizing the tricks and tools that Don has accumulated throughout his years of playing and teaching the mandolin. While Don specializes in the mandolin, this workshop is appropriate for musicians who play any stringed instrument. All levels are welcome. Cost: $45. A discounted concert and workshop package option is available - more details and tickets available at seventymain.com Here is what Don says about his teaching philosophy: I understand that not all people learn in the same manner. Some people learn easily from books while others do better with videos or learning from recordings and some find it best to be face to face with the teacher. I offer many ways of learning to play the mandolin at many different levels. Whether you are just beginning your mandolin journey or you have been at a while and could use a few challenging lessons to get you to the next level, a good tip from a lesson or workshop may be just what is needed.

Long Term Care: Are You Prepared? is Long-term Care Awareness Month. And when it comes to longterm care such as a stay in a nursing home or the services provided by a home health aide youll want to plan for the potential costs involved. Of course, you might think that youll always be able to live independently, without requiring any assistance and perhaps you will. However, the odds arent necessarily in your favor: About 70% of Americans who reach the age of 65 will need some form of long-term care in their lives for an average of three years, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And every type of long-term care is expensive. Consider these numbers, taken from the 2013 Cost of Care Survey: The national average rate for a private room in a nursing home is $83,950 per year a jump of 24% over the past five years. And its not much cheaper for a semi-private room in a nursing home the average cost is $75,405 per year, up 23% from five years ago. A full-time home health aide costs, on average, $44,479 per year. If you had to spend more than $80,000 per year for a nursing home, and you needed to stay in that nursing home for several years, what would it do to your savings? How would it affect all your financial goals? Many people think Medicare will pay for long-term care expenses, but thats just not the case. In reality, Medicare only covers a small percentage of long-term care costs, which means its typically up to the individual to foot the bills. Youve worked hard to position yourself for an enjoyable retirement, so its important to protect your income and assets from potentially huge long-term care costs. How can you deal with these expenses? Essentially, you have a couple of options. First, you could selfinsure by incorporating long-term costs into your future budget but, as the above numbers indicate, that could be pretty expensive. Your second choice is to transfer the risk of incurring long-term care costs to an insurance company. A financial professional can assist you in choosing the right solution for your individual needs. However, as important as it is to address costs, and ways of meeting them, its also necessary to look at some of the other factors that may be connected with the need for long-term care services. To illustrate: If you were to enter a nursing home, you might be suffering from a physical or mental disability that could keep you from handling your own affairs. So you may want to consult with your legal advisor to discuss a durable power of attorney, which would allow you to delegate your financial decisions to a relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose. Preparing for the unexpected, including long-term care, takes time and careful planning. So why not observe Long-term Care Awareness Month by getting started on your plans? It can be time well spent. Consider me your local financial resource; a true farm girl at heart who understands family and business dynamics and the important decisions that need to be made. In her hometown of Poultney and outside the educational settings, she has been instrumental in many community programs. For a great many years Sheila was involved in the planning and orchestration of Poultneys July 4th parade, field and fireworks leaving no detail overlooked ensuring successful events. With the Catholic Church, Sheila has been a member of the Catholic Daughters [Ladies Guild] where she dedicates herself to fund-raisers as well as bereavement dinners for parishioners so families and friends can come together in fellowship after funeral services. A huge undertaking, Sheila gladly does this in an effort to support local families. As a member of Poultney Womens Club, she has been instrumental in the Tree of Giving Project. This project enables the children of needy families to enjoy the celebration of Christmas with special packages donated, purchased, wrapped and distributed. She makes sure the elderly receive beautiful holiday baskets. She has helped facilitate breakfast with the East Bunny, has chaired the Calendar Committee and a host of other fundraising events. She has also often helped families connect with the Salvation Army for fuel assistance and she serves on the board of trustees of Poultney Food Shelf. Now retired, her lifes work as a professional educator is never distant to her. Currently, she volunteers with the BackPack program in which she prepares backpacks for students in need of school supplies at the beginning of each school year. She continues to expertly and quietly support educational boards and programs for students and new teachers in a holistic and meaningful way as a consultant, mentor and literacy leader. A devoted wife, mother of two and grandmother of five, Sheila feels that Poultney has afforded her family a quality of life not found elsewhere and that Poultney is the essence of her being. The Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990 by Poultney Chamber of Commerce, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship - - a real "unsung hero" of Poultney. The Citizen of the Year will be the Grand Marshal of the 2014 July 4th parade in Poultney. Main and East Main Streets.
Twenty-three years of citizen awards have been presented to thirtyone Poultney citizens. Poultney Chamber looks forward to the community joining with them on November 23rd for this 24th annual celebration; this year honoring Sheila H. Nichols, life-long Poultney resident. Jessica and Howard Steller opened Picassos at 21277 State Route 22, Hoosick Falls, NY, in the former location of Bakers Nursery, the first week in August. 518Their grand opening was August 9 to 11. Business has been really steady since then, 854-7041 said Jessica. They want people to stop in to Picassos, create their own sandwich or salad or ice ream mix-ins and sit back and relax. In the summer time, picnic tables outside help make relaxation inevitable. There is a cozy dining room for eating inside if the weather is cool or rainy. Otherwise, half the pleasure of eating at Picassos is sitting outdoors. Picassos is more than just a place to eat, it is a destination, said Howard. Picassos menu offers a variety of interesting wraps, sandwiches, panini and salads. In addition, they encourage customers to create their own ideas for a sandwich or salad. They want their customers to be like Picasso and express their creativity, except they want them to do it with what they eat. Menu ideas are on display. On one wall they have a long list of combinations for mixins to add to the ice cream. And they mean mix-in. The ice cream is placed on a marble slab and the fruits and/or candies are mixed right in before it is put in a cone or a dish. Jessica is proud to say they use all fresh local products, and she makes everything but the ice cream from scratch. Thanks to the previous owners creativity, there is a lovely little pond and waterfall fountain with a seating area that is just perfect for relaxing while eating. In other areas there are Adirondack style chairs and picnic tables. The couple expect next year they will create some gardens in the area and add more picnic tables. The Stellers have transported their llamas down to the property where they now live and are on display for all to enjoy. Folks will be able to view them before, after, or, while they enjoy their meal Picassos has been a dream of the Stellers for many years, but their situation was not quite right until now. Picassos is open Sunday from 10-6, MondayTuesday 10-7, Wednesday 10-2, Thursday-Saturday 10-8. They know they will be open for the fall HFCS game season for sure, and they are currently working on a winter hours schedule. Picassos is on Facebook or the restaurant can be reached at 518-659-6068.
