EXPERIMENTNO:-12
AIM:- Measure cake resistance, filter media resistance in filter press.

FILTER PRESS

APPARATUS:- Filter medium, Filter press, Filter plate and Frame, Circulating pump, Mixing tank and Agitator, set of Filter cloth. MATERIALS:- The solid powder like CaCO3 with in water. THEORY:A general equation for all types of constant pressure filtration was developed by hermans and bredee, dt2/dV = k1(dt / dV)n where V = volume of filtered liquid, k1, n = constants If n=0 ,equation (1) becomes , d(p) /dV = k2(p)n where, p = pressure drop A specific cake resistance is defined by the equation, pcgcA / umc where, = k3(sp / vp)2(1 - ) / 3p (3) (4) (2) (1)

For incompressible cakes is independent of the pressure drop and of position in the cake. A filter cake is called compressible. In a compressible cake varies from place to place in the cake ,it varies with the pressure drop and it may be vary with the time. The filter medium resistance Rm can be defined, by analogy with the equation (3), by the equation, p pb / Rm = pm / Rm = u / gc (5)

The filter medium resistance Rm varies with pressure drop and with the age and cleanliness of the filter medium ,bu8t since it is important only during the early stages of filtration. PROCEDURE:(1) (2) Take 100liter of water and 5kg of CaCO3 in a graduated bucket. Mix it well and make an uniform slurry.

Arrange the Centrifugal pump, Connection tube, Filter medium, Filter press, Filter plate and Frame, Circulating pump, Mixing tank and Agitator, set of Filter cloth. Crank hand wheel on the end of the filter press to loosen the sections of the press. Install the two sheets of filter paper between each section and crank hand wheel to tighten the sections and maintain the numerical sequence for each. Starts the apparatus with mixer and filter press in circulation mode for several minutes. Run filter press until the desired data has been obtain. Be ready with your stopwatch & note down the reading of the time in second for every liter of water collected.

(2) Calculate the pressure drop from the centrifugal action P = 2(r22-r12) 2gc

(3) Plot the graph of (t/V) Vs. V using the data of observation table (4) Find out the slope and y-intercept from the graph. The plot of (t/V) Vs. V will be linear with a slope (Kc/2) and intercept of (1/qo). From these two values we can find the values of and Rm. Calculate :Rm/= (1/qo) (AgcP)/( )

Calculate : = Kc A2 gcP / c
