Paper II GENERAL ENGLISH
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
SECTION A
1. (a) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow : (5)
My neighbour's wife is a clever woman. She can easily afford servants but she does
not keep any. She very often stands at the gate of her house. When she sees some
neighbour or other going to the shops, she calls out, Thanks, will you get me some
potatoes? O Sunanda, I haven't got any onions. Buy some for me and some chillies
too. She smiles sweetly at them and thanks them profusely when they bring her
what she wants. For larger purchases, she depends on hawkers who come to her
door. The only time she leaves the house is to see a film or to go on a shopping
street. Once or twice her husband has been seen carrying buckets of water in
from the street tap. She never asks anyone in, so we can only wonder whether she
does any cooking at all. It seems as if she gets her husband to do it, poor man!
(i) Why doesn't the neighbour's wife keep any servants?

One of the amazing things about ants is that it can eat living things. This is a
special kind seen in Africa. This species is called the driver ant. They always go
out in armies and not even in groups. On their way whatever they see they would
kill and eat. You might wonder how a little insect like an ant can kill and eat. The
reason is they attack as an army, each individual and covering only a small area of
the body of the victim. Even the largest animals would run away when they see the
ant - army approaching them.
If that creature does not runaway, then it is goodbye to it. The ant-army could kill
a fly or a wounded lion.
Such ant-armies are also seen in the southern and central parts of United States

Why should we take the trouble to learn English? It is neither our own language nor the
language of any other part of India. It is an extremely difficult language. The study of it
occupies a great deal of time and demands a great effort. What profit can we get from
this study?
The study English still is, and always will be, of great importance in India, Because in
many ways it is extremely useful both to individuals and to the country. Even a clerk in
an office is likely to get on better if he can write correct English. India is connected with
the outside world in many important ways. For instance, in industry and commerce, we
have dealings with other countries, since we need both to export our own goods and to
import goods from abroad if India is to prosper financially and socially. In most other
countries, English is well understood, while our Indian languages are not understood at
all. Therefore our correspondence with them must be carried on in English. Again in the
political affairs of the world, India is playing greater and greater part; and since English
(DENG 21) 4
is an international languages it is used in political discussions and correspondence.
Besides, where English is better understood than Hindi, it will be sometime before
Hindi can replace English in correspondence between these parts.
