Question:
Shaykh I love you for the sake of Allh! In Syria the callers of misguidance, such
as al-Bt who gets people killed with his words, have dominance so please support
the people of Shm even with a word.
Answer from Shaykh Mashhr (hafidhahullh):
The angels spread their wings over the people of Shm and it is reported in the Sunan of Aboo
Dawood from Abdullh ibn Busr (radi Allaahu anhu) who said: O Messenger of Allh, choose
for me. Allhs Messenger (sallallhu alayhi wassallam) replied: Upon you is the land of Shm, for it is
the purity of Allh from His Creation in which are found Allhs pure ones from His servants. The angels spread
their wings over the land of Shm.

The one who resides in Shm [which is Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine] will get the reward
of one who is a Murbit [stationed] on the condition that he works to spread the deen and is a

[TN]: This hadeeth is saheeh and on the authority of Abdullh ibn Hawlah (radi Allhu anhu) not
Abdullh ibn Busr as Shaykh Mashhr mentions. Imm al-Albn states about this hadeeth in
verification and edit of the hadeeth in Abul-Hasan Ali bin Muhammad ar-Rabs book Fadil ush-
Shm wad-Dimishq (Riyadh, KSA: Maktabat ul-Marif, 1420 AH/2000 CE), pp.27-31 that be
hadeeth is found in: Ibn Askir, Trkh; at-Tabarn; Sunan of Ab Dawood and Musnad Ahmad and
al-Hkim. Some routes of the hadeeth are narrated by al-Irbd ibn Sriyah and Ab Ummah, radi
Allhu anhum. The hadeeth does not include the part about The angels spread their wings over the
land of Shm for that is in another saheeh hadeeth narrated by Zayd bin Thbit (radi Allhu anhu)

guardian of creed and good character, and has honour for Allhs sanctities, this is a Murbit in
the path of Allh. What is taking place in Syria is due to a wisdom which Allh wants, the
incredible events which are taking place by Allh my brothers. Before what is happening now
occurred I used to reflect often to myself about Shm and Syria. Allh wants good by what is
taking place now, does Allh want the virtue and the command to return to it? I hope that what
is occurring now in Syria will bring forth the establishment of our brothers from Ahl us-Sunnah.
There is clear sectarian conflict taking place and the people ruling over Shm [i.e. Syria] are
Nusayr Btins upon btil about whom Shaykh ul-Islm Ibn Taymiyyah stated in Majm al-
Fatw: They are more harmful to Islm and the Muslims than the Jews and Christians.
They are more harmful and before Bayt ul-Maqdis was purified from the Crusaders all of the
Btiniyyah were apprehended and killed. Shm is the cemetery of the crusaders, Shm is the
cemetery of the Mongols and Shm is the cemetery of the corrupt evil doers and within Shm
the Sunnah of Allh does not change. The second despatch of the people of deen is from the
land of Shm the first one being from Madeenah and this is the Sunnah of Allh about which the
Prophet (sallallhu alayhi wassallam) informed. Thus, the land of Shm is upon goodness and what
is hoped is that Allh will ordain goodness for the people of Syria and liberate them from those
who show no protection to them and give no concern either to the old or the young, the youth
or the elder, the women or the men. I ask Allh to hasten their end and to purify these lands
from every shirk and dhulm for He, glory unto Him, is Ever-Able to do that.
