Core Programmes for Excellence on Tour! 35 Cultural Programmes for Excellence on Tour! 77
Following the successful kick-off of our road show DWIH New Delhi - Excellence on Tour! in the city of Hyderabad in spring this year, The German House for Research and Innovation, New Delhi (Deutsches Wissenschafts- und InnovationsHaus, DWIH New Delhi) embarks on its journey to the western part of India to the city of Ahmedabad to present the scope of Indo-German cooperation. The BMBF Science Pavilion set up in the heart of Gujarat Science City, provides a perfect venue for the members of the DWIH New Delhi to meet Indian students, academics and researchers. In this futuristic pavilion, we will present to you fascinating insights of what Indo-German research is all about. We will inform about the various opportunities available for cooperation between Indian and German scientists. The program will touch upon areas of research which are cutting-edge in the 21st century. What do you know about cancer biology? Did you ever think about isolating DNA? What is the latest news from researchers working on global challenges like Climate Change or Renewable Energy? How can High-Tech meet low budgets for housing?
Well, if you are interested in one of the many topics outlined in this program, I am sure we will be meeting soon during Excellence on Tourat Gujarat Science City. Enjoy your visit to the Pavilion and your discussions with Indian and German academics!
Maximilian Metzger
Deputy Director General, BMBF
India is one of Germanys most important research partners in Asia. Over the last decades both countries have become strong partners in terms of education, science and research. The German House for Research and Innovation in New Delhi plays an important role within the diverse Indo-German cooperation. Today, it gives home to local offices of altogether 15 major German science and research organizations and universities. DWIH New Delhi - Excellence on Tour! is a road show designed by the DWIH to showcase the potential of the German education, research and innovation landscape and the given opportunities. Germany is one of the top destinations for science, innovation and education and invites bright young people to work together with our top class research institutes and universities. The DWIH New Delhi - Excellence on Tour! road show is presented within a unique pavilion created by the German artist Marcus Heinsdorff.
In Ahmedabad the DWIH will present a broad program comprising cultural events, scientific lectures, panel discussions, exhibits and an information booth. The pavilion will be located at the Gujarat Science City. It will be open to the public. Visitors can gather information about the many different opportunities to study and spend a research internship in Germany. I extend a warm invitation to come and visit the DWIH Tour station Ahmedabad. I am convinced that Germanys science and research institutions hold great potential for further cooperation with India.
7,000 kilometers that is roughly the geographical distance between Germany and India. However, in todays globalised world, geographical distances dont play a decisive role any more. We are interconnected through global services, global production, global communication, global education and science exchange. In this new concept of global neighbourhood, India and Germany are not only strategic partners, but next door neighbours. As neighbours, we should know as much as possible about each other, we should connect. True, Germany is about good cars, high tech and the Oktoberfest in Munich. Just last month I organised the first authentic, original Oktoberfest in India on the occasion of the German National Day at my residence in Delhi. More than 2,000 guests came, among them many Indians in traditional Bavarian costumes and they loved it! But Germany is much more: An economic powerhouse and your gateway to Europe, the largest economy of the world. An open, multicultural society with a growing Indian comunity. And a scientific hub with a broad range of top class universities.
For Indian academics, going to Commonwealth countries is standard. Exploring Germany is still out of the ordinary, but more and more trendy. In the last years, we had an annual increase of 20 % of Indian academics studying or doing research in Germany. For very good reasons: a high-end research landscape, tuition-free Universities, over 1500 degree courses taught in English language, state of the art clusters between Universities, research centers and Industry, good job opportunities. After all, Germany has the lowest youth unemployment rate in the whole EU. If you consider choosing Germany as your study or research destination, then you should not miss the Excellence on tour of the German House for Research and Innovation in Delhi at Gujarat Science City. For an entire week, it brings all the information you need right at your door: hands-on, crisp, entertaining, simply klasse You will discover: after all, 7,000 kilometers are easy to bridge when it comes to forge your personal future. Meet you all at Gujarat Science City!

The Professorship Print Media Technology [pmTUC] is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Chemnitz University of Technology and has an international reputation for its pioneering R&D and education in printing and media technologies. pmTUCs pivotal position is enhanced by unique research facilities, a pool of about 35 highly qualified staff members from manifold disciplines and an extensive network of partnerships with industrial companies, R&D centres and universities at home and abroad. About the collaborations The pmTUC, since 2004 is in close contact with universities and various companies to continuously strengthen the relation with India. A latest exemplary to support this is the pmIndia Innovation Lab opened earlier this year. The double degree program for student exchange is the fundamental basis for the strong collaboration with India of pmTUC and is accompanied by other approaches of the Institute as well. These are internships, presentations, scientist exchanges, conferences or visits. We have now reached a stable basis on which we would like to expand. Since 4 years students are exchanged and the enrolled students are steadily increasing. With continuously widening the appearance of the pmTUC in the field of education a continuation of enrolments will be achieved. Through this the German problem of adequate qualified personnel can be tackled with this program.

Depleting energy resources is a major concern for all countries, especially India and Germany. Demand for clean and efficient energy resources has prompted the current advanced research focused on developing energy efficient processes for industries, devices for consumers as well as means for improving energy generation and storage through different means. These topics are of interest to both Indian researchers as well as German institutions and hence many joint collaborative research projects under DWIH are anticipated. Information on current research programs on the topics related to energy materials and energy generation and storage in Germany will create more interest in the Indian researchers as well as students to take up higher studies in Germany which is the motive of DWIH. In Gujarat, R&D outcomes have been translated into technologies and their use for industrial sectors and common use. Still a lot has to be done, especially using nanoscience and nanotechnology. Therefore, in India, many research groups are working on new materials for energy application right from for ITER program to solar cells and fuel cells. The Symposium is being jointly organized by the Humboldt Academy, Gujarat, Gujarat Science Academy (GSA) and Department of Materials Science, Sardar Patel University. This symposium, which will consist of lectures by eminent scholars in the fields will exchange current status in this area and future programs. This will open new opportunities for future collaborative programs between India and Germany and help the scientific communities from India and Germany.

Cancer is a group of diseases medically referred as malignant neoplasm and is described by abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. The cells lose their regulation on cell division and grow uncontrollably spreading to other parts of the body via blood and lymph, ultimately leading to formation of malignant tumors. During the onset of disease, no signs and symptoms appear, just a mass of cells or lumps continuously growing. It has been reported that around 200 different types of cancer can affect human. In a normal cell, genes controlling the growth and differentiation are altered which ultimately lead into transformation to cancer cells. The two main groups of genes which play important role in tumor formation are Oncogenes which support growth and tumor suppressor genes which restrain cell survival and division. Cancer is caused either by abnormal up regulation of normal oncogenes or down regulation of tumor suppressor genes. Altered programmed cell death and DNA repair mechanisms leads to malignant growth. Cancer is caused mainly due to environmental factors like consumption of tobacco, unhealthy diet, viral infections, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, stress, lack of physical activity, etc. Cancer incidences are rising in developing and developed countries due to change in lifestyle. Cancer can affect people of all age groups. Chances of survival of patient after the onset of disease vary with the type, position of the cancer, age, immunity, etc. In present workshop we will discourse recent advances in cancer biology with some practical

demonstration of basic techniques including determination of cell viability and DNA isolation from human as well as plant cells. In cancer research, in vitro cell culture is the important methodology for primary drug screening as well as molecular mechanistic studies. Trypan blue dye exclusion method can be used to measure cell viabilityand thus to differentiate between live and dead cells. Trypan blue is a vital stain. The test is based on the principal that live cells have integral undamaged functional membrane and hence do not take the dye, whereas dead cells have broken or damaged cell membrane and they take the dye from the surrounding medium. Non-viable cells have distinct blue color when observed under microscope, whereas viable cells are visible as unstained. This results in the ability to distinguish between viable and non-viable cells. In genome level study for cancer, pure and intact DNA isolation and its visualization (using Agarose gel electrophoresis) are the crucial steps. Plant materials are among the most difficult for high quality DNA extractions. Rigid cell wall around the cell hinders the isolation process. Further, secondary metabolites and phenolics add on to the complexity of isolation process. On the other hand, good quality DNA extraction is a prerequisite and thus extreme care is taken to properly prepare the tissues for extraction. This involves the use of liquid nitrogen flash freezing followed by grinding the frozen tissue with a mortar and pestle. Following homogenization, a standard DNA isolation protocol is followed which can also be used for other living system.

Every photographic perception is creating a subjective image of the world, a Theatre of Real Life. In dialog with the others we can learn to understand our own photographs, our cultural and social influences. This is the basis for developing a fresh and personal visual language. Its the main target of this workshop to force this productive dialog.
ASTROPARTICLE PHYSICS
by Dr. Utpal Sarkar, PRL, Ahmedabad
Pavilion 15.30 h - 16.30 h
Astroparticle Physics is one of the emerging branches of physics, in which we study the fascinating interface areas of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Wolfgang Zurborn Born 1956 in Ludwigshafen/Rhein. Studied at Bavarian State School of Photography in Munich from 1977 to 1979 and at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund from 1979 to 1984. Got the Otto-SteinertFellowship of the German Society of Photography (DGPh) in 1985 for his project People Pictures Picture People, presented 1987 at Folkwang Museum in Essen. Running the Gallery Lichtblick in Cologne since 27 years together with Tina Schelhorn, showing international photography in more than 170 exhibitions. Founded Lichtblick School in 2010. Since 1998 in the board of directors of the German Photographic Academy (DFA). Teaching photography in many different countries. Solo shows of his work presented all over the world. Participated in important group shows, like On the Body and other Things German photography of the 20th century. Book publications about all different photographic projects by Wolfgang Zurborn. www.wolfgangzurborn.de In particle physics we try to understand what are the fundamental particles and how they interact. In the process we probe shorter and shorter distances with highest possible energy accelerators. At present the highest energy accelerator is the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN, Geneva, which discovered the Higgs particles, running at an energy of 7 TeV, which could probe a distance of about 10^{-19} cms. On the other hand, in cosmology we try to understand how the universe had originated, possibly from a Big-Bang, about 13.7 billion years back. The cosmological models are based on our astrophysical observations. We try to observe light coming from the farthest objects in the universe, and since these lights began their journey long time back, we can infer about the past of our universe from these studies. For example, the Hubble length is about few giga parsec or about 10^{30} cms, which is a typical distance scale in cosmology, which corresponds to a time, when our universe was very hot and star formation had just begun. In this introduction to astroparticle physics, we shall discuss how our observations at the shortest distance scale, say LHC, can shed light on our understanding of our universe or the observations of the farthest objects in the sky, e.g., COBE and WMAP results.

Art, Denmark (2010); MuVIM, Valencia (2009), amongst others. He has also participated in artist-in-residence programmes, workshops, panel discussions and artist talks in India, South Korea, Thailand, UK, Switzerland and Poland. Coelho was awarded the Faade Video Award (2011) by Art Today Association, Bulgaria; Promising Artist Award (2007) by Art India and India Habitat Centre, India and the Johnson Prize Fund (2006) by BIAD, UK. One cannot interpret Baptist Coelhos work from the surface: it is born, and thrives in the complexities under the apparent faade and probes what is underneath. The compilationunder my skin under your skin attempts to string together conceptual underpinnings that recur in his work, particularly between 2006 -2011. The notion of skin is used in both a literal and metaphorical sense, exploring parallel notions of identity and anonymity; corporeality and impermanence; reality and pretense;the self and the other - that constitute the foundations of his narratives in video. Coelho has an ability to focus on integral aspects of life that go unnoticed and opens them up for diverse interpretation. There exists a visceral connection between his life and his art practice. Each of his projects combine elements growing out of his personal history, his immediate environment, and larger global perspectives and concerns.

Contemporary German animation film 129 min, 1989-2006 Geschichte des deutschen Animationsfilms V
Thanks to artistic experiments, the animated films of the Weimar Republic enjoy world-wide reputation to date. Under the motto Film as Art (Rudolf Arnheim), Walter Ruttmann, Viking Eggeling, Hans Richter, Rudolf Pfenninger coined what is known as Absolute Film - abstract animated films in the spirit of non-objective art. The innovations were not limited to the visual aspect, but also incorporated elements of music and sound. The legend says that Shri Krishna brought the Raas form of dance to Gujarat when he founded his capital on the island city of Dwarka. Garba, the most-popular folk dance of Gujarat, finds its root in the word Garba which translates as the womb. This dance is performed during the (Hindu) festival of Navratri, meaning nine nights, when the Goddess Amba is worshiped. The festival worships the Woman (Shakti) and the power of giving life that woman has. Her womb is represented by a perforated pot. The lamp in this pot represents the life. The nine nights represent the nine months of conception and the whirls of Garba dance represent the Hindu belief of reincarnation. This dance is as much meditating as popular. Puppetry, animation, computer animation and artistic hybrids - the DVD CONTEMPORARIES includes the most exciting German artistic short films produced in the last two decades. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the landscape of German animation was transformed. The DEFA animation studio in Dresden was forced to close after attempts to maintain it, under the new economic conditions, failed. New film schools were founded, e.g. in Ludwigsburg and Cologne, and emphasis was placed on animation training courses. In addition to the growth of educational facilities, the digitalization of the animation process led to an increase and rapid development of animation productions. Abstract, opulent, witty, subversive, and always full of depth and brilliant ideas - German animated films captivate with their high creativity, making them successful at festivals, both at home and abroad. Here we have a unique compendium of contemporary animation culture.

He is also on the international advisory board of the journal Moving Image Review & Art Journal published from London. Gangar has authored and edited several books on cinema in English and Gujarati, including two books on the German filmmakers, Franz Osten and Paul Zils, both published by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai. In 2001, he was artistic consultant along with Marina Abramovic on the dance-theatre production Total Masala Slammer, directed by Michael Laub and produced by the Hebbel Theatre, Berlin. He was also a production executive on the Lars von Trier-Jorgen Leth production, The Five Obstructions. Gangar was one of the key-members of the team on Classic Incantations: The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg performs A.R. Rahman during the Germany Year in India, 2011-2012. Recently, his book The Music that Still Rings at Dawn, Every Dawn: Walter Kaufmann in India, 1934-1946 has been released by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai.
Background information and Concept: The Indo-German cultural symbiotic story traces itself back to only a decade short of a century to 1925, and to the film The Light of Asia (Die Leuchte Asiens) or Prem Sanyas. The Indian producer-actor and the German director who got together in this historic collaboration were Himansu Rai (1892-1940) and Franz Osten (1876-1956), respectively. And it eventually resulted in the establishment of Bombay Talkies, Asias leading film production studio, in Mumbais suburb of Malad. The Germans journey from Munich to Malad is an exciting story. Paul Zils was yet another German who was instrumental in establishing the Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA) in Mumbai. Besides cinema, it was sangeet (music) that also historically binds Germany and India, and here my reference is to the composer-musicologist Walter Kaufmann. Besides composing background music for some Hindi films during the early 1940s, Kaufmann helped form the Bombay Chamber Music Society, for which he gave around 50 concerts. In Mumbai, where he lived for a long time, he worked with the Hindi film producer-director Mohan Bhavnani, with whom also worked Willy Haas, the script-writer. It is this glorious symbiosis between Germany and India that becomes part of the centenary celebrations of Indian cinema. While recalling the unique history, excerpts from some films will also be presented.

David, a young waiter, falls in love with Marie, a literature student. He only manages to impress her after a manuscript he finds accidentally is published as his novel. This plagiarism spurs on Davids career - that is until Jacky appears, the real author of the book. But he too turns out to be an imposter.
The Dance-Theatre piece marks the first collaboration between choreographer Hrishikesh Pawar and German filmaker Konrad Hirsch. The performance also becomes a treat with visuals showcased during the performance with original choreography re-constructed from 1920/30 celebrating dancers Mary Wigman, Great Palucca and the whole golden period of Expressionist Dance. This close study of modern dance also helps understand todays contemporary dance. The performances celebrates the past, present and future.

Jim Dunloop began to train as a classical piano player at the age of four. At his minor age he was analyzing the compositions of Gershwin and Bruback, leading to a keen interest in jazz music. He quickly developed his knowledge of the creative works of many great jazz/funk pianists such as Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Chick Corea and Adam Makiewicz. In the year 2004 they both met in Berlin for the first time and quickly began to collaborate on shows and production. Their first vinyl releases on the infamous Milk Crate label, The Antique Anthem, Bombay Raw & Finale 74, were very successful in the worldwide dj-circuit, followed by a cover version of Babe Ruths The Mexican in 2006, which was dubbed by UKs Jazzman Gerald as the version to have. In 2009 their debut album Stamp out Reality was released on MPM Rec. which featured artists like the legendary Blowfly, Mr Complex, Flomega & Lady Daisey to name a few. On the remix tip they build a strong reputation with works for artists lie All Good Funk Alliance, Deela Danny Massure or Kid Gusto.
