Headmasters Corner
On Monday the school congregated for our annual Remembrance Service. It was a very moving affair and we were thrilled to be joined by Mr Warn who played Amazing Grace on his bagpipes at the end. Thank you to the boarding staff and all the boarders who represented the school so well on Sunday at Olveston Church. An e-mail was sent to the school community on Tuesday congratulating our General Knowledge team who became the National Inter- School Area Quiz champions. This sees them secure their place in the national finals at Harrow next term. Well done to all concerned! Thank you so much to Mrs Preston and the FOTM for putting on such an enjoyable Bonfire Night. It was wonderful to see the whole school community come together in such a way. As ever, the bonfire itself was a huge success and we thank David Wilmer and the team for their hard work. Thank you to Year 1 for such an enjoyable assembly on friends this morning. I know our special guest, Prof Steve Webb MP, thought it was excellent. Well done to all!

Cross Country
U9 v Wycliffe & Beaudesert Park A fabulous performance from our girls and boys in Years 3 and 4. The girls came second to a strong Beaudesert team with Isabelle Preston and Iona Campbell coming home in 2nd and 4th place respectively. The boys race over the 1km course was dominated by an impressive Tockington VIII with our runners coming home 41 places ahead of the second placed team. Otis Walker ran a gutsy and thrilling race, winning with a long bursting sprint in the final 30m. Jake Wakeling came home in 3rd place, Freddie Cooper 4th and Harry Mather 6th in an impressive team display. What a talented group we possess! TMS Cross Country Congratulations to Bennie Sanzo who became the 18th fastest junior boy on our all time list with a fabulous 8 minutes 12 seconds. Oscar Watts achieved a list time, working hard to run an impressive 8 minutes 54 seconds. Well done also to Dalis Jones who ran 8 minutes 47 seconds to become the 15th fastest on the junior girls list. These three athletes still have another year on the same course. Adrian Ng had a fabulous run, smashing his PB by a huge 2 minutes 54 seconds. He has worked hard on his fitness and is also developing into a very good rugby player. Last week was the first week of the November Cup, a cumulative competition over the next month or so. The second week of the November Cup saw an excellent effort from our athletes. The outstanding runs came from Antonia Hopcraft-Guest (15 minutes 25 seconds) on the senior course and Olivia Banks (9 minutes 20 seconds) on the junior course. Adrian Ng leads the November Cup with 16 points, closely followed by Georgina Loring and Dalis Jones with 12 points. In Years 3 & 4 cross country today Otis Walker gave the performance of the day, completing the course in 3 minutes. This effort ranks him as the second fastest Year 3/4 runner in 2013. There were also excellent runs from Alys Wakeling, Carmen Rey-Jones, Archie Carter and Jacob Browning.

Swimming News

Congratulations go especially to the Year 3s who completed PBs for the first time and to: Logan Fitzpatrick, Alys Wakeling, Toby Gaulton, Erin OLeary, Ben Jacobi, and Archie West who gained a top ten spot in their first Personal Best session.

Year 2 at SS Great Britain

Year 2 had a fantastic day on the SS Great Britain on Tuesday. We explored the cabins, did some hot riveting and even launched the ship.

Year 1 Florence Nightingale Workshop

Year 1 had great fun learning about Florence Nightingale with Kirsty from the Freshwater Theatre Company. They learnt about her life and work in a very hands on way. Florence talked about her journey to Crimea and her work in the hospital. She even had them scrubbing the floor!

Julia Golding Visit

Years 7 and 8 enjoyed a visit from award-winning author, Julia Golding, last week. She was really informative and got the children writing fantasy stories, creating exciting characters, considering how to create back-stories and plotlines. She also talked about her writing habits - her books are written in true JK Rowling style in cafes with a cup of coffee, particularly Waterstone's cafe! She works on her stories in her head as she walks the dog - a labradoodle called Casper and she lives in Oxford. She travels widely and used to be a foreign diplomat and a policy adviser for Oxfam. Julia's new series - the Young Knights - unites two worlds - the human world and the world of myths and legends. The children were very enthusiastic, bought books and had them signed and even shared their work with her. Judith Case

Monmouth Quiz
Four of our Year 7s went to Monmouth to compete in the Prep Schools' Challenge on Sunday and they acquitted themselves well, winning their last round against last year's champion school - Moor Park. Many of their opponents would have been from Year 8 and so they did well in the face of some tricky questions and some stiff competition. This quiz runs along the lines of University Challenge with competitors having to be quick off the mark to win the next three questions for their teams. They all made a contribution to the team effort and gave up their Sunday afternoon to represent the school, so well done to : Roshan Patel, Olivia Campbell, Antonia Hopcraft-Guest and Abby Blackwell and we look forward to taking part again next year.

Christmas is Coming with Free Gifts and Free Postage to Boot

As Christmas approaches, I know many of you might be thinking about getting books or giving books as presents to friends and relatives. I am sending out the Christmas Scholastic Catalogues for you to look in the next week and am opening the Group Order online, if you would prefer to browse the full range and make your choices electronically. The web address is : www.clubs.scholastic.co.uk. This is a great opportunity to earn free books for the school library and to buy books at a good price. Paper orders need to be returned to me with a cheque by November 22nd, which is the date on which I will also close the online Group Booking form. There are some great deals like the All-time Classics set of five books for 9.99 and favourites like Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas and CS Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (which years 6 to 8 are going to see at the theatre in December). Do remember that if orders are delivered to the school, you won't pay any postage and packing. What's more you can get two issues of National Geographic for kids absolutely free with your order. You cant go wrong! Judith Case
