OurgoalatScenerySolutionsistocreatesuperiorterrainproductsfortheMicrosoftFlightSimulator series.Inordertodothat,weusetheabsolutebestsourcedataintheindustry.UltimateTerrainX USA,alsodescribedasUTXUSAinthisdocument,isbuiltusingtheTeleAtlasMultiNetdatabase, whichwebelieveoffersthemostpreciseGPSqualitydatacurrentlyavailablefortheUSA.

AboutTeleAtlas
TeleAtlasisaleadingproviderofdigitalmapsforavarietyofnavigationproductsandenterprise andconsumersolutions.Ourdatabaseisthemostaccuratereproductionoftoday'sstreetnetwork, enablingturnbyturnrouteguidanceonvirtuallyallEuropeanandNorthAmericanroads.Singapore, HongKongandlargepartsofAustraliaarecoveredaswell.Compatibilitywithallmajornavigation systemsandouropensystemdesignhaveplacedusattheheartofbothconsumerandbusinessto businessapplicationsacrosstheworld.

However,forumsareaterrificsupportvenue.Theyallowalluserstoshareinformationthatwould normallybeprivatewithanemailsupportbase.BothFlightOneandScenerySolutionsmaintaina presenceintheUltimateTerrainforumbelow,andwouldbehappytohelpyouwithanyfurther assistanceyouneedatthatlocation.

1. Afterinstallation,theUltimateTerrainXinstallerwillimmediatelycalltheUltimateTerrainX SetupTool.Thefirsttimethesetuptoolisexecuted,itwillautomaticallyconfigureyour environmentusingthedefaultsettings.Youdon'tneedtodoanythingelseatthispoint. 2. StartFSX.MakesurethattheSceneryComplexitysliderinFSXissettoatleastNormalif youplanonusingtheenhancedlightingfeaturesandtheextrusionbridgefeaturesinthe UltimateTerrainXseries. 3. Enjoyyournewsceneryenvironment!Whenyouareready,exploreallthedifferent configurationoptionsthatareavailablethroughtheUltimateTerrainXSetupTool.

5.UltimateTerrainXSetupUtilityDetails
ValidationProcessAndErrorChecking
Immediatelyaftertheinstallationprocess,theUltimateTerrainXUSASetupToolwillbestarted. EachtimetheSetupToolloadsitwillvalidatemanyoftheFSXconfigurationsettingsforyouand displayanyunresolvedtexturereferencesorlayeringproblemsthatitfinds. Figure51(startupprocess)

Intheexampleabove,thevalidationprocessfoundnosignificanterrors.Atthispoint,youcanpress theOKbuttontocontinue. Intheeventthatthevalidationprocessfindsinconsistencies,youwillbewarnedasshowninFigure 52.Toviewthewarningmessages,clicktheWarningMessagesAreAvailablebutton.

Wehaveprovidedouruserswiththisadvancederrorcheckingtohelpresolveanyissuesthatmay comeaboutasaresultoftheuseofthirdpartyproductsand/ormanualtweakingthatmayhave corruptedyourenvironment.Weknowthirdpartyaddonsmakethishobbygreat,buttheycanalso leadtounstableenvironmentswhensuchproductsarenotinstalledorremovedappropriately. FeatureActivationButton
Thefeatureactivationbuttonwillshowyouthecurrentactivationstatus(activeorinactive)forthe currentlyselecteditemintheFeatureSelectionTree.Infigure56(previouspage),thebutton indicatesthattheExtrusionBridgesForRailroadsfeaturesiscurrentlyactive.WhenanUT/XUSA featureisactive,itisdisplayedwithinFSX.AninactivefeaturewouldnotbedisplayedinFSX.

Todisableafeature,justclicktheactivationbuttonwithanActivestatus.Thiswillchangethe activationstatusoftheUltimateTerrainXfeature.Oncethisprocessiscompleted,thebuttonwill indicatethenewstatus.

Toenableafeaturewhichcurrentlyhasaninactivestatus,justclickthefeatureactivationbutton labeledInactive. WhenUltimateTerrainXfeaturesareactivatedormadeinactive,fileswillberenamedonthehard disk.Thisprocesswilltakeafewseconds.Thecurrentprogressisalwaysdisplayedinaprogressbar atthebottomoftheUT/XUSAwindow.Whentheprocessiscompleted,thebuttonwilldisplaythe newstatus(ActiveorInactive).

FeaturePerformanceImpact
TheFeaturePerformanceImpactbarwillgiveyouagraphicalrepresentationoftheperformance impactoftheselectedUltimateTerrainXfeature,relativetootherUltimateTerrainXfeatures.Most UltimateTerrainfeatureswillnothaveabigimpactonframeratesand/oroverallsystem performance. TheFeaturePerformanceImpactbaronlyshowsaroughestimatefromanUltimateTerrain perspective.ItisnotadirectindicatorofoverallFSXperformance.

6.UltimateTerrainXSetupTool,UTMenu
Overview
Asmentionedearlier,theUltimateTerrainXSetupToolhasbeendesignedtoaccommodatethe varietyofneedsandabilitiesofUTusers.Thissectiondescribessomeinterfacefeatureswhichwill beofinteresttothenoviceuser,butalsooffersadvancedtips.

QuickUltimateTerrainEnable/Disable
IfyouwanttotemporarilyturnoffyourUltimateTerrainXenvironmentandreturntothedefault, selectQuickUltimateTerrainEnable/DisablefromthedropdownUltimateTerrainmenu.A windowwillbedisplayedshowingthecurrentUltimateTerrainXstatus.Youcanthenchoose whetherornotyouwouldliketochange(toggle)thestatus. Figure61

TechnicalInfo:ThisfeatureisfastbecauseitdisablesorenablestheUltimateTerrainXlayersinthe FSXSceneryLibrary.Nosceneryfilemanipulationsareactuallyperformedduringthisprocess.

ChangeRoadSurfaceColors
UltimateTerrainXprovides2differenttypesofroadsurfacetextures:ConcreteandAsphalt.You canchangethetypeofroadsurfaceassociatedwithdifferentroadtypesbyselectingChangeRoad SurfaceColorsfromtheUltimateTerrainmenu.ThiswilldisplaythewindowshowninFigure62. Figure62

Whenthewindowisactive,itwillshowwhichselectionsarecurrentlybeingusedbyFSXforeach typeofroad.Tomakechanges,simplymakeaselectionforeachroadtypefromtheConcreteor Asphaltcolumn.Then,presstheOKbuttontosaveyourchanges. AdvancedUsers:IfyouhaveprovidedyourownroadtexturesusingtheAdvancedmenu,the settingsinthiswindowmaynolongerbevalid.Thesetuptoolwillrecognizethecustomtextures andremovethecheckmarksfromthiswindow.

ChangeResolutionOfUltimateTerrainXTextures
UltimateTerrainXinitiallyusesaveryhighresolutiontextureset(approx1meter).Formostusers, thissettingwillprovidetheoptimumvisualenvironment.However,someuserswithlowerend systemsmayberunningFSXtexturessetatlowerresolutions.Ifthisisthecase,thenyoushould probablychangetheUltimateTerrainXtexturestomatchtheresolutionoftheFSXtextures. Thecurrentresolutionwillbeselected.Tochangetheresolution,selectoneoftheavailablesetsand presstheModifyButton.Thisisasetofguidelinestoconsiderwhendecidingwhetherornotto changetheUltimateTerrainXtexturesetresolutions. RestoreUltimateTerrainXToInitialSettings
UserswhotweaktheirUltimateTerrainXenvironments(eithermanuallyorusingtheUltimate TerrainXSetupTool)canrestoreUltimateTerrainXtotheinitialsettingsbyselectingRestore UltimateTerrainToInitialSettingsfromtheUltimateTerrainmenu.Thisfeaturewillnotchange theUltimateTerrainXactivationstatus(activeorinactive)ofthevariousfeatures.Instead,itwill restoreanyUltimateTerrainfeaturecharacteristicsthatmighthavechanged.Thisincludesadvanced featuresliketexturemappings,linewidthchanges,flatteningstate,etc. TechnicalInfo:AfterinstallingUTX,theFSXTERRAIN.CFGfilewillcontainmanyadditionalentries forthevariousUltimateTerrainXfeatures.TheRestoreUltimateTerrainToInitialSettings operationreturnstheUltimateTerrainTERRAIN.CFGvaluestotheirdefaultstate.Anymanual changesthatyoumayhavemadetotheseentrieswillbeoverwrittenwiththedefaultvalues.

ChangeWaterTextureColoring
Bydefault,FSXusesaverybluewatercoloringforallwaterfeatures,withtheexceptionofafew muddyriversandlakesinisolatedareas.Also,allwarmwaterregions,liketheGulfOfMexicoand theSoutheastUSAseaboard,aredisplayedusingaverylightbluetropicalwaterenvironment. UltimateTerrainXwillprovide4alternatecoloringenvironments,using4differentwaterclass replacementsets:Clearwater(bluetint),Algae/Plankton(greentint),Muddy(browntint), Muddy+Algae(greensandbrowns). TechnicalInfo:WaterclassisjustliketheFSXlandclass,butisusedtodefinedifferentwater texturesfordifferentlocationsaroundtheworld.UltimateTerraindoesnotactuallyprovidedifferent watertextures.Instead,itreclassifiesthewaterclassdefinitionsusingthe60differentwatertextures currentlyavailableinFSX. UponinstallationofUltimateTerrainX,theUltimateTerrainXwaterclassfeatureswillbeactive,and theselectedwaterclasswillbetheUltimateTerrainClearWater(bluetint)option. MostoftheterrainsceneryinFSX(andalsoUltimateTerrainX)isdrawnasvectorgraphics.Using thistechnique,individualfeaturesaredrawnontheterrainintheirnaturalsize,shapeandlocation. Thevectorfeaturesarealwaysdrawnontopofthegenericbaselandclasstextures.Forexample,to drawalakeinacity,FSXwillfirstdrawthecityusingagenericlandclasstexture,andthenitwill drawthelakeinitsnaturalshapeontopofthelandclass. MostcompatibilityproblemswilloccurwhenanotherproductprovidessimilarfeaturestoUltimate TerrainX,inaregionthatisalreadycoveredbyUltimateTerrainX.Asmoreproductsbecome availableforFSX,freecompatibilitypatcheswillbereleased.
