Our autumn time meditation on the last things` continues. 1he end is near` is a recurring theme
throughout the New 1estament. St. Paul is ery insistent on the point and only backs o rom it in his
later writings. %<? 1G8> ;GO?6 FG YI>7? F<? '=8F< X:F< YI6F:;? proclaims our responsorial. Our end,
then, will come with judgment, just to make us een more nerous about 1lL LND.

1he Book o Malachi that was supposed to prepare us or the Gospel has the last day coming blazing
like an oen` to make all eildoers stubble` and to set them on ire.`

\ith all o the doom and gloom` signs that surround us rom wars without and diision within, it
is ery tempting to read the signs o the times as warnings that 1lL LND may be near. But i I
were you, I wouldn`t purchase a ticket on the next aailable commercial space tour to watch the
end o the world-just yet.

A little bit o research reeals that what Scripture is reerring to as signs` and the end` are to be
understood as apocalyptic. 1hat is to say, these scriptures reer to a typical prophetical iew that

speaking and understanding, one could be reerring to the end o history` as it is perceied at the time
or the end o all history. So when prophets speak o the end,` they are almost always doing so to

assumed to be staying in open areas without shelter. 1hese numbers are expected to increase as more

is the personal responsibility o each one o us as stewards o the
Church. All members o the Church hae their own roles to play
in carrying out its mission:
-Parents, who nurture their children in the light o aith,

-Parishioners, who work in concrete ways to make their
parishes true communities o aith and ibrant sources o
serice to the larger community,
-All Catholics, who gie generous support-time, money,
prayers, and personal serice according to their
circumstances-to parish and diocesan programs
and to the uniersal Church.
