Crash Course Q&A 1. Sexual Reproduction: when _______ meets _________ 2. What would happen if our cells only divided by mitosis? a. We would all be clones b. We would have half of our cells from mom and half of our cells from dad c. Possibly both 3. Haploid cells have _________ the amount of chromosomes. 4. Meiosis is when a specialized diploid cell splits in half ___________ producing ___________ cells each with different genes. We call these the egg and sperm. 5. Phases of Meiosis are: Prophase -> _________ -> Anaphase -> Telophase -> Cytokinesis -> Prophase 2 -> Metaphase -> ___________ ->___________-> Cytokinesis. 6. Circle the phases from question 5 that are the phases of mitosis. 7. What is the difference between prophase and prophase 2? ________________________________________________________________________

Directions for all Centers:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Sit at station currently working on Make sure all group members have their notebook and something to write with Turn to page in notebook that matches the station you are at Read directions about the station Begin station Any questions must first be asked to 3 peers at your station. If no one knows than ask Ms. K. (Ask 3 before me) 7. Finish station before class ends 8. Reflect on your learning in agenda book

Jobs for all Centers:

Someone in each group needs to take on the responsibility of -Reader (read directions and questions out loud) -Facilitator (keep everyone on track and focused on task) -Time Keeper (watch time and make sure group finishes in one class period) If you are going to be one of these jobs, write job here_____________________

**Remember, you do not hold this job permanently. You can be fired and replaced if you do not carry out your responsibilities, absent many times or if group members vote you out due to attitude or neglect to team.

Crazy Question What came first, the sperm or the egg?

Center 1: IWBAT compare the phases of meiosis Directions: 1. Watch animation of Meiosis on Smartboard. Answer the 3 questions below. Website: http://www.johnkyrk.com/meiosis.html Questionnaire: 1. Describe what happens in prophase 1 to the chromosomes only during meiosis. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 2. Do the chromosomes duplicate again in prophase 2. Yes or no 3. How many cells are made at the end of meiosis? ________________________________ 4. Are these cells haploid or diploid? ___________________________________________ 5. What do we call the cells at the end of meiosis be depending on if they are made in a male or female. ________________________________________________________________________ 6. Why is it important that these cells only have one set of chromosomes? (Hint: remember in order to make an offspring two of these cells must combine) ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

2. Carry out meiosis in dragons and fertilize dragon eggs to visualize the outcome or meiosis. Website: http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/DragonMeiosis/meiosis_dragons.html

Page 1: Parents can produce different ____O______________. This is because parents have different __T_________.

Page 2: Each chromosome can have different traits like wings or no wings based on its genes. Click play on the male dragon and female dragon to observe the phases of meiosis.

1. Does the mother dragon and father dragon have the same genes on the chromosomes (scroll over them)? _______________________ 2. Play meiosis for each dragon. Do they produce 4 sex cells? ___________________________________________

Page 3: During meiosis the parents cell divided twice to form four __G__________, cells that have half the number of chromosomes. These are also called sex cells (egg and sperm). Since each gamete (sex cell) has half the number of chromosomes, a gamete from the _F_________ can be combined with a gamete from the _M_________ to create a new complete cell. 3. Does each sex cell have the same exact genes on the chromosomes (scroll over them)? ______________________

Directions: Select two gametes, one from the male and one from the female. Click play to
see what kind of offspring you made. 4. Draw a picture of the male and female dragon below.

Center 2: IWBAT convince women to make positive choices while pregnant. Research how human development can be harmed based on mothers environment/choices. Focus on nutrition, alcohol and drugs.
Directions: 1. Go to these websites: -Poor nutrition: http://resources.thefeministbreeder.com/pregnancy/prenatal-healthcomfort/prenatalnutrition-how-it-really-affects-your-unborn-child/ -Alcohol: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/7031.php -Drugs: http://www.webmd.com/baby/drug-use-and-pregnancy 2. Read information and record notes in the chart below. Bad Nutrition What are effects on the fetus? Alcohol Drugs

Can it be fatal?

Describe how the childs life will be like

Describe what the child will look like

Center 2 continued.
We need to spread the word to women about how some choices they make while pregnant can harm their baby!! Write a letter expressing your concern and knowledge about the topic. Directions: 1. Choose who you will write this letter to. Some examples are: your mom, a friends mom, any mom, women planning to be a mom or a company who sells drugs and alcohol 2. Choose which bad habit you will write about. Your choices are bad nutrition, alcohol or drugs. 3. Write a informing letter that includes: a. How you feel about a women who does this bad habit while pregnant b. Information on what happens to the fetus (baby) if the woman continues bad habit. Use your notes c. A convincing statement to influence women to stop bad habit.

Center 3: IWBAT illustrate the steps of meiosis. What do the phases of meiosis look like?
Title: What is meiosis? Background information: Only two kinds of cells divide by meiosis. These are called sex cells and are the egg in females and sperm in males. Meiosis is a system by which offspring receive genetic information from both of its parents. This is done successfully because the sex cells from both parents contain half the amount of DNA as a normal cell. With only half the DNA, when the sex cell (egg) combines with another sex cell (sperm), the proper amount of DNA is maintained. **Without meiosis the number of chromosomes would double each generation and the cell would not be able to survive. Purpose: To see the individual steps of meiosis Procedure: READ ALL STEPS! 1. Find a partner at your table. 2. Obtain a petri dish containing pony beads, yarn and thread. 3. Remember the petri dish is the nuclear membrane The beads are the centromeres Define Centromere:___________________________ The yarn pieces are the chromosomes Define Chromosome: ____________________________ The thread is the spindle fiber Define spindle fiber: ____________________________ **Label the sketch showing the nuclear membrane, centriole, centromeres, chromosomes and spindle fibers. 4. Using the materials construct prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis, prophase 2, metaphase 2, telophase 2 and cytokinesis 2 Write a description and Draw the phases of meiosis in the spaces on the next page and label the nuclear membrane, centromere, chromosomes and spindle fibers if present.

Center Conclusion:
CENTERS RUBRIC: Circle the grade for each category that you think you deserve. RUBRIC Needs Improvement (1) Completion of all There is work Centers missing from all centers Time Management Struggled to keep up and finish work. Had to come after class to finish You did not help anyone in your group. Did all work yourself Good (2) There is less than half of a center not finished You had to rush to finish 3-4 centers before class ended You and you group members had difficult time working together and didnt over come it Awesome! (3) You have tried all 4 centers but they are not complete You had to rush to finish 1-2 centers before class ended You and your group members discussed but never taught each other something Excellent!! (4) You were present every day and completed all 4 centers You finished all centers before class ended

Collaboration with others

You helped and asked for help from others in your group

Look back through the centers and create 2 test questions that could be used on the unit test.

Write to Ms. K about the Centers. What do you suggest I fix or keep? What did you like or didnt like? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
