STANDARD: 4.5.K.D: Identify waste and practice ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. 4.5.2.D: Describe how people can help the environment by reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. 4.5.K.A: Identify what people use in their everyday life. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes) A. The second grade students will be able to state the importance of recycling by writing a paragraph stating different reasons why you should recycle. B. The second grade students will be able to identify materials that can be recycled by placing them in the correct bag during the activity. Reuse: to get more use out of materials by using them for longer periods of time and finding new ways to use the materials 3. Reduce: to make something smaller or use less, resulting in a smaller amount of waste. 4. Recyclable: a substance or object that can be recycled. C. Big Ideas 1. The importance of recycling and its benefits. 2. The materials that can be recycled and how to sort recyclable materials.

Implementation A. Introduction 1. The teacher will then ask the students to raise their hands if they recycle at their own home? 2. The teacher will ask the students if they know what it means to reduce, reuse, and recycle. i. Write what the students think these words mean on the board. 3. The teacher will show the brain poop video about recycling to the students. 4. Discuss how the story relates to the topic for the day. B. Development 1. Go back to the students ideas of the 3 Rs. After viewing the video, discuss the differences and add/ erase words. Then, the teacher will write the definition of each vocabulary word (reuse, reduce, recycle) on the board.. 2. Have the students write these definitions in their notebooks and make sure they understand what these words mean through verbal discussion. 3. Show the song about recycling on YouTube. After the clip discuss the importance of recycling. Use examples from the video. 4. The teacher will ask the students what are some materials that we use in our daily lives that can be recycled. 5. Identify some specific items in the classroom. 6. The teacher will talk about ways to reuse and reduce. i. What can be done with these materials? Give examples of ideas. 7. Introduce and explain to the students the inquiry that they will be doing. 8. Have the students break into groups of 5 and give each student a pair of gloves and each group a bag of garbage. 9. Place the bins/ bags that are labeled paper, plastic, cardboard, metal, and glass in the front of the classroom. 10. In their groups, instruct the students sort through the garbage and place their items into the labeled bags at the front of the classroom. i. As the groups sort the materials the teacher will take notice on items misplaced. 11. After all of the groups have finished sorting through their trash, have them take off their gloves, wash their hands, and return to their seats. 12. Once the students are in their seats go through each bin one by one and verify that each object is in the correct bin. If the teacher comes across an item that belongs in a different bag, re place it into the correct bag. Discuss possible confusion about that specific item. C. Closure 1. Give each student a paper. Instruct them to write down materials that could go into each bin and answer the question at the bottom. Remind students to write at least 4 items for each bin. 2. Give students 5- 10 minutes to complete the paper. Wrap up the lesson for today and tell them that they will be learning about conserving tomorrow. 3. Discuss feedback on the inquiry. 4. Tell the students that we will be learning about plants and their importance to the environment. D. Accommodations 1. Allow extra time to complete the paper at the end. 2. Have a printed sheet of vocabulary words.
