Dr. Irmo Marini, Ph.D

Is a professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Texas Pan American. He obtained his doctorate in Rehabilitation at Auburn University and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Canada. Thirty-two years ago, Dr. Marini didn’t allow a hockey accident that resulted in C-5 tetraplegia, refrain him from being the extraordinary person we’ve come to love and respect. On a national level, Dr. Marini was the recipient of the 2009 distinguished career in rehabilitation education award by the National Council on Rehabilitation Education, and a year later received the 2010 James F. Garrett distinguished career award in rehabilitation research by the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association. He was also recently the National Council on Rehabilitation

Education’s 2013 recipient of the rehabilitation educator of the year award. In 2012, Dr. Marini received an honorary doctorate in science from his alma mater Lakehead University. To date, he has published over 75 peer-reviewed journal publications, 25 book chapters, and co-authored and co-edited 3 books. Dr. Marini also began a forensic rehabilitation life care planning practice in 1994 and is also a vocational expert witness with the Social Security Administration. Most importantly, Dr. Marini helped establish the the Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling at UTPA, which holds the

17 th rank out of 98 schools in the country. Dr. Irmo

Marini’s 16 years of dedication to UTPA and surrounding community has helped build and shape the department of rehabilitation. Leaders like Dr. Marini help expand our horizons and reach out to empower students. For that, the Graduate Rehabilitation and Counseling Association (GRCA)

Irasema Silva, B.S., is a 26, is a graduate student at The University of Texas-Pan American who plans to graduate in Fall 2013 with a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling and an extensive list of remarkable accomplishments. Ira earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a second Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2009 from UTPA. During her undergraduate studies she was employed at UTPA as tour coordinator and dedicated her volunteer time to a number of organizations such University Program Board, Student Government Association, Distinguished Speaker Series Committee, Golden Key International Honour Society, and Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc among man others. Irasema has been awarded the UTPA Profiles of Excellence, Veteran Javier De La Garza Scholarship in the Fall of 2013; Davidson Family Charitable Endowed Scholarship in the Fall of 2013; Dean’s List Spring of 2012-present; Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges in the Spring of 2013; Salute to Student Leader Award in Spring of 2007 and 2013; Nationally Certified Student Leader in Fall of 2006. Recently Irasema was the recipient of the 2013 Texas RehabAction Network (TRAN) Scholarship and The Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) Scholarship at UTPA. She is completing her internship at the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS). Irasema shared, “The advice I can give is for students to prepare for the demands of attending a university, prioritize and always stay determined.

A triumph consists of overcoming challenges and

being honest in your endeavors while striving to accomplish what you truly believe in.”Irasema Silva

is also the founder of the GRCA and currently

serves as the president. GRCA would like to

recognize Irasema Silva, for all achievements, hard work and dedication. This motivation has

empowered

UTPA. Thank you!

M.O.R.E. Event at UTPA

The department of rehabilitation took part in UTPA's College of Health and Human Services

(CHSHS) Maximizing Opportunities in Research and Education (MORE) event that took place April 25-2, 2013 in effort to educate the public about the complications caused by obesity and diabetes. This Community Health Fair took place at the UTPA Quad from 8A.M. to 4P.M. that included sessions on preparing healthy meals, Zumba demonstrations, glucose level readings, vaccines and other health related check-ups. GRCA members volunteered on Saturday April 27, 2013 by hosting a table on Community Day where they educated the public on disability awareness and etiquette. GRCA is constantly seeking opportunities to volunteer out in the community as well as within the university.

ACES 5k Run/Walk & Pin Social

GRCA members volunteered in the 7 th annual Autism Council for Educational Support and Scientific Studies on Saturday, April 20 th of 2013. Prior to the event, GRCA held a social gathering in the Student Union inviting all students and faculty to make autism awareness ribbon pins. The pins were proudly worn by ACES runners during the event.

Love Your Cha Chas 5K Run!

GRCA is involved in various community events such as the Tails and Trails. This annual 5k run/walk takes place on February 16, 2013 to benefits the Palm Valley Animal Center, Harlingen Humane Society, and Laguna Madre Humane Society. Our members took part in the Tails and Trails at the Edinburg Municipal Park with their pets alongside other volunteers from all over the Rio Grande Valley.

Another annual event is the “Love your cha chas” breast cancer awareness 5k run/walk. Our members showed their support in pink at downtown Edinburg on October 16 th 2012.

GRCA Fundraisers!

On April 11 th of 2013, GRCA hosted a Baked Goods Fundraiser that took place outside the Rehabilitation office from 11 a.m. -1:00 p.m. Members collaborated in setting up a table filled with a variety of delicious homemade and store bought baked goods that ranged from donuts, to minion cupcakes, brownies and more! Another fundraiser GRCA hosted was the selling BBQ brisket plates from Ramos BBQ a local vendor. Thanks to all our members we reached our goal and sold 500 plates. Thank you!!
