Winter Camp Weekend

Come to camp in the winter! Skate on Dew Drop Pond, carve ice from Lake Chilver and discover your camp during the winter. Play outside in the snow and on the ice - skate, hike and build snow forts - then, come inside to a warm and satisfying supper! Bring warm clothes, skates, bedding, toiletries and pyjamas. Family Weekends
Bring the whole family to the Camp Chief Hector YMCA for a weekend get-away! There are a variety of activities to choose from to create a unique holiday weekend. Family campers can try things like horseback riding, hikes, high and low ropes courses, group games, arts and crafts, a climbing wall and evening campfires. Our daily child care program enables parents to leave children ages three to five with us when taking part in some activities. Accommodations, activities and meals are included. Spring Break Overnight Camp

A week of winter fun at Camp Chief Hector YMCA. This overnight camp during CBE and CRPS March break runs Monday thru Friday. Activities include arts & crafts, music, drama, drumming, high and low ropes, climbing, challenge course, hiking and exploring, winter cookout and more! This program is offered for children 3-5 years of age. YMCA Staff will run appropriate activities for these children while parents and older siblings are participating in their activities.

CANOEING AGE: 6Y AND UP Or cLOSELY SUPErVISED BY PArENT


Participants will enjoy paddling on Chilver Lake in tandem or voyageur canoes. All levels welcome. Shoes/sandals with a heel strap are recommended. PFDs and life jackets are mandatory at the waterfront area and will be provided.

CLIMBING TOwEr AGE: 5Y AND UP


Camp Chief Hector YMCA boasts a 4-sided climbing wall on which participants of all levels can challenge themselves. Ages 5 and are welcome but participants must fit into a harness or bodyharness. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory for this activity. Climbing harnesses and helmets will be provided. Participants will be able to use the traverse wall while waiting or when finished at the climbing tower.

HOrSEBAcK RIDING TrAIL rIDE EXPLOrErS AGE: 10Y AND UP AGE: 8Y 9Y


A variety of activities will be led by YMCA staff such as Voyageur canoeing, fort-building, low ropes.

DIScOVErErS AGE: 6Y 7Y
This program is offered for children 6-7 years of age. YMCA Staff will run appropriate activities such as a scavenger hunt and low ropes for these children while parents and older siblings are participating in their activities.

Participants will start in a corral learning how to mount their horses. The group will continue to the arena for a short lesson in basic riding skills. When participants are comfortable the group will head out on a trail ride of approximately 45 minutes. Boots with a 1 heel are required (rubber boots work well) and will be provided if needed. Riders will be required to show control of their horse BEFORE going on the trail ride. Participants that have balance and/or coordination concerns due to previous injuries, arthritis or excessive weight may be deemed unfit to ride by the Horse Director.

TEAM SwING AGE: 10Y AND UP


The Team Swing is an activity at our Higher Ground area. Participants are harnessed and attached to aerial cables for a wonderful swing experience. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory for this activity. Climbing harnesses and helmets will be provided.

HIGh ROPES AGE: 10Y AND UP


The high ropes course is a series of poles and wires which form an aerial obstacle course. High ropes elements provide a wide range of challenges. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory for this activity. Climbing harnesses and helmets will be provided.

HOrSEBAcK RIDING ArENA RIDE AGE: 6Y 11Y


During an arena ride, children 6-11 years old will be given the opportunity to ride in one of our arenas. They will learn some basic riding skills, but the emphasis is placed on learning to ride through playing games. Participants will also learn about brushing and working around the horses. Boots with a 1 heel are required (rubber boots work well) and will be provided if needed. Parents are welcome to watch their children ride from outside the arena. Parental supervision may be required for participants under 10 years.

Campers in the Mistaya section can anticipate a camp session full of playing and many adventures outside with new friends and counsellors! The Mistaya 6-day horse option includes a day with horses learning about grooming, saddling and riding. Mistaya campers participate in many camp activities including archery, climbing tower, challenge course, arts and crafts and canoeing. MISTAYA(6 Days) Overnight Hike Program

Campers in the Mistaya section can anticipate a camp session full of playing and many adventures outside with new friends and counsellors! The Mistaya 6-day overnight option includes an introduction to camping experience tenting overnight on Hectors large main-site. Mistaya campers participate in camp activities including archery, climbing tower, challenge course, arts and crafts and canoeing. This program does not include horseback riding. This program is based from either Bowfort Lodge or Hector Lodge at Camp Chief Hector, depending on session dates. Please ensure you know at which lodge your camper is based. MISTAYA Trip to Gray Jay Site (13 Days)

Campers in the Mistaya section can anticipate a camp session full of playing and many adventures outside with new friends and counsellors! The Gray Jay option includes a 3-day stay at our Gray Jay site west of Sundre, AB. There, Mistaya campers will be able to explore the local area on foot and experience the smaller camp community. Back at mainsite, campers will participate in a day learning about horsemanship and riding. Mistaya campers participate in camp activities including archery, climbing tower, challenge course, arts and crafts and canoeing. These Mistaya campers begin and end their camp at our Mainsite. Campers will be transported to and from the Gray Jay site by Camp Chief Hector. Campers must be the correct age by Nov 15, 2013. Jr. Shotungwa campers will stay in Midcamp tipis at Camp Chief Hector, which are a short walk from the horse corrals. During their time at camp, they will develop personal strengths and learn new skills as they experience working as a team with their group as well as with their horse. The Jr. Shotungwa program includes arena riding and trail riding, as well as learning about horse grooming and saddling, general care and first aid. Jr. Shotungwa campers will also participate in other camp activities, including climbing or ropes courses, arts and crafts, and group games. Campers must be the correct age by Nov 15, 2013. Kananaskin camps offer a time for learning, making friends, working as a team, and having fun outdoors! During the 6-day program, campers will participate in a day hike to Barrier Lake or nearby sites in the Bow Valley Provincial Park, canoeing, arts and crafts, and climbing. These 6-day Kananaskin camps will run out of Hector Lodge and campers will stay in tipis around the lodge. Campers must be the correct age by Nov 15, 2013.

Kananaskin campers who are 12 years old and choose a 13-day traditional camp will stay in tipis around Hector Lodge. Campers will experience many camp activities, including climbing, arts and crafts, ropes courses, archery, camp craft and lots of games! Campers will participate in a three- day, overnight hiking trip to a nearby backcountry camping site in Bow Valley Provincial Park. They will also spend a day riding horses and learning about horsemanship, as well as a day canoeing on Chilver Lake or the Bow River. Campers must be the correct age by Nov 15, 2013. PIONEER Canoe Program (13 Days)


AGE: 14Y | MIDcAMP
Pioneer campers who are 14 years old and choose the canoe option will stay in Midcamp tipis at Camp Chief Hector. During their time at camp, campers will learn about teamwork, responsibility and develop personal strengths. During the first few days at camp, they will spend time paddling on Chilver Lake, the Bow River and preparing for their canoe outtrip. The group will participate in a 7-day canoe trip on the Red Deer River and explore Albertas Badlands. Campers will experience other camp activities, including climbing and ropes courses, arts and crafts, archery and hiking. Campers must be the correct age by Nov 15, 2013. Our Family Camp program features all of our regular summer activities for family members of all ages. Participants will have the opportunity to canoe or swim in the lake, sing songs at campfires, shoot arrows, make crafts and explore our hiking trails. Camp Chief Hector has the amenities, activities and friendly welcoming staff to make a safe, adventurous and fun weekend for groups of 8-200 people. For sports teams, clubs and other groups we offer a wide range of activities suited for youth and adults from ropes courses to archery, hiking, canoeing and much more. We have indoor bunk-bed accommodations yearround as well as tipis in the spring and fall. Break-out spaces are available for activities or conference- style meetings. Also available: portable projector/screen, whiteboard and markers, stereo equipment, full coffee and tea service and much more. Shared indoor accommodations are a great way for teams, clubs or other groups to spend a fun weekend together in the mountains. Our food services team is able to accommodate special dietary restrictions and food allergies including vegetarian, no pork/seafood, dairy and/or gluten free and is happy to discuss menu requests with you. Our Hector Health Centre is a great space for weekends together with friends and family. With two spacious living rooms, a full kitchen, large deck, four washrooms and enough beds to sleep 16 the Health Centre is the perfect space to have a family reunion, or to host a games or craft retreat. We also do weddings!

For more than 30 years, Camp Chief Hector YMCA has hosted groups of grade 5 to 12 students at our Outdoor Schools programs. These unique opportunities enhance school learning, build communication and cooperative skills and provide a shared experience for students of different backgrounds. EcOSchOOL AGE:10Y AND UP


ECO School is geared towards students in Grades 4-6 and aims to develop environmental awareness and community-building in an outdoor setting. Student learning is fun, active and experiential. In this Outdoor School program, counsellors help students explore the Bow Valley, examine various tree species, play the Predator Prey game, and build teamwork through the low ropes and challenge courses. It is possible to adapt the traditional program in order to meet the unique learning goals of your students. Cost $205/student plus GST and transportation.

cUSTOM BOOKINGS
Custom group programs are available for school groups who want to work together to build community and develop their leadership skills. With the guidance of YMCA staff members, students are able to participate in activities such as initiative games, low ropes, archery, hiking, the challenge course, the Predator/Prey game and the high ropes area. It is also possible to book our site for teacher-facilitated programs such as a leadership development program or band camp. Costs vary depending on program length, meal requirements and activity selection.

Hector Spring School is a program designed to meet various learning objectives from the Grades 4-6 Science and Social Studies program of studies. Students will learn about the food chain as they play the Predator Prey game and revisit the past through exploring our Voyageur heritage in big canoes. During their day hike they will adventure around the foothills and learn to identify different tree species as they explore the forest and wetlands. Students will learn about the stories of early Canadians as they participate in cultural activities such as tipi living and animal tracking. Cost $205/student plus GST and transportation.

Sunship Earth is designed for students in Grades 4-6 and encourages students to reconnect with the earth and reflect upon their ecological practices. Students learn about energy flow, cycling, diversity, community, interrelationships, change, and adaptations. Activities such as helping a giant leaf photosynthesize, building soil from rocks, and playing a squirrel as its food resources change, help students to understand these concepts.
