A Real Lilith Zip Dobyns There are many astrologers in the Far East who feel no need to consider

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. There are many astrologers who are not about to clutter up their charts with Vesta, Ceres, Pallas, uno, and Chiron, all of which ! consider indispensable in chart interpretation. !magine the dismay when we offer them ten more minor planets" #l $. %orrison and . &ee &ehman of New 'or( are the benefactors who ha)e presented us with these ten new opportunities *challenges+, # lot of astrologers will say -than(s but no than(s.. /ut ! react li(e a (id turned loose in a candy factory. %y problem is, there is ne)er enough time to do a proper 0ob of in)estigation, so ! am 0ust tac(ling one of the new asteroids in each issue of The Mutable Dilemma. !carus was discussed in the 1emini issue, and the e)idence has continued to accumulate since une. 2ome interesting cases were sent to me by Nancy /arnhart, especially 2piro #gnew who had natal !carus in his first house con0unct Ceres, with progressed 2un con0unct them within minutes when he was forced to resign as Vice President of the United 2tates. !f Ceres is one of the (eys to Virgo and hence one3s 0ob, the combination is certainly appropriate for a come4down in one3s 0ob through personal o)er4reach. #nother interesting case is /illy Carter. 5uring his days of playing games with the &ibyans and his admission of alcoholism and going in for treatment, he had progressed !carus s6uare progressed 2un, the latter in Taurus in its own fifth house. 2till another case is 'o(o 7no who had progressed !carus con0unct her natal 2un when ohn &ennon was (illed. There are two possible times for 'o(o, but the one used by most astrologers puts the !carus42un combination in the 2un3s house, the fifth. The theme that seems to be coming through is the danger of the o)er4reach when !carus is in)ol)ed in fire patterns8 aspects to fire planets, in fire houses, or fire signs *in that order of importance,. #fter The Mutable Dilemma went to press, ! located the chart on the finding of part of %arcia %oore3s body and found that transiting !carus was con0unct %arcia and 2unny3s natal !carus positions at the time of the disco)ery 0ust as it was on $inc(ley and 9eagan3s at the time of the shooting. !3m still not putting !carus in e)eryone3s chart, but when ! suspect that !3m dealing with a person or situation where it would be prominent, ! do chec( it out, and ! usually find strong aspects. 7ne last case which ! hope will ha)e a happier ending is 5iana 2pencer whose progressed !carus was on her se)enth house cusp when she married Prince Charles of England. The marriage opened up the potential of becoming a :ueen in time, as well as mother of a future ;ing or :ueen. !carus only implies a fall if we are reaching beyond our capacities. !t will be fascinating to see if she becomes :ueen in <=>=4=? when progressed !carus will con0unct her natal 2un in the se)enth house. To hammer again at a theme that is seen regularly in our pages, anything important in the character and conse6uent destiny will be shown repeatedly in the horoscope. !f any new ob0ect or techni6ue is )alid and useful, it has to repeat what the chart already says, but it may amplify or clarify the message. !f we (eep on adding new asteroids, as ! e@pect to do, we will ha)e to ha)e a computer. !t is 0ust too time consuming to calculate that many factors by hand. !t is primarily because ! do not ha)e the new ten asteroids on the computer that ! do not loo( at them regularly. /ut it is also an encouraging indication of understanding of the meaning of the new planets when we can say in ad)ance, -This person loo(s li(e an !carus type,. or a &ilith type, or whate)er, and then chec( to see if the asteroid is in)ol)ed in close and appropriate aspects in the chart. /efore we lea)e !carus *which is becoming one of my fa)orites,, ! will mention that although Ted ;ennedy and %ary o ;opechne did not ha)e an !carus con0unction between their charts, they had a natal s6uare. #lso, %ary o3s progressed !carus was s6uare Ted3s natal 2un while Ted3s progressed !carus was opposite his %oon4Neptune con0unction in the >th house and trioctile his Pluto in the Ath house. !f im Eshelman3s rectification of %ary o3s chart is close to accurate, her progressed !carus was con0unct her local, progressed #scendant while Ted3s natal !carus was con0unct her natal !C. /ut this article is supposed to be about &ilith. ! titled it the real &ilith to distinguish it from the imaginary, in)isible %oon with the same name. The imaginary &ilith seems to ha)e first appeared in an ephemeris printed in England in the <=th century. The name and mo)ement were the same as !)y 1oldstein3s ephemeris, but the positions were different. That is, &ilith was said to mo)e three degrees a day bac(ward through the Bodiac, but the English ephemeris put it in a different part of the Bodiac. 2till a third ephemeris was once shown to me in Florida, again gi)ing the same three degrees a day motion but putting the phantom &ilith in a different sign than either of the other sources. The counts against a moon &ilith includeC <. the fact that no real physical ob0ect has that (ind of regular motion8 D. it would ha)e to be around D4<ED times as far from Earth as the %oon to mo)e three degrees a day8 F. at that distance, a body might not be able to maintain an orbit around earth, but if it did, the attraction of the moon and the sun would create an extremely erratic orbit. Ghen all these astronomical realities are added to the combination of se)eral claimed ephemerides and the whole idea of an in)isible ob0ect, ! ha)e felt 0ustified in ignoring &ilith. /ut ! did ta(e the time to chec( out a few charts, using 1oldstein3s positions, and did not find it meaningful.

The asteroid named &ilith, in contrast, is a )isible small planet with a normal motion that )aries from day to day and includes both direct and retrograde periods. To differentiate the two in writing about them, we might refer to the imaginary %oon as %4&ilith and to the asteroid as #4&ilith. The balance of this article will deal only with the asteroid. !n the &ilith ephemeris, . &ee &ehman suggests that &ilith indicates the unconscious and a4rational side of the mind. Ghen prominent in current patterns, it is said to indicate a time of testing with a need to e@plore the unconscious. #l $. %orrison, in a comment in the ephemeris of one of the other new asteroids mentions that most people e@perience &ilith as negati)e and as a denial of se@. !n mythology, &ilith was the first woman, created with and e6ual to #dam, the first man. Ghen she refused to be subordinate to #dam and he insisted, she left and 1od made E)e from one of #dam3s ribs, to be sub0ect to #dam. 2ome of the mythology associates &ilith with dangerous childbirth and hostility towards children8 some with acting as se@ual temptress to mortal males. #s we always stress in our wor( with astrology, it is a pragmatic sub0ect. %yths are starting places, but only e@tensi)e e@perience will confirm or deny the accuracy of the old traditions or of the new theories. %y first effort in loo(ing for a meaning for &ilith was to put it in all the horoscopes in &ois 9odden3s boo( of famous women8 that is, all who were born in this century since the ephemeris co)ers <=?? to D???. %y first obser)ation was that it was not a denial or bloc( to se@. #mong the $ollywood ladies noted for their se@y reputation, we can mention ayne %ansfield who had it e@actly con0unct the 5escendant, ma(ing a station at her birth, her daughter, ayne %arie %ansfield, who had it on the cusp of the <Dth house in e@act semi4se@tile to a Venus42un con0unction in 2corpio, ane Fonda with it con0unct upiter in #6uarius and opposite Pluto who switched from a se@pot role to a serious actress and political acti)ist, Farrah Fawcett who has it con0unct %ars in the >th house, opposite Pluto, with 2aturn and 2un more widely in)ol)ed in the configuration. ean $arlow, (nown as the -blonde bombshell,. had it s6uare her 2un4!carus con0unction, and octile Uranus, Tuesday Geld, noted for teen4age affairs, alcohol, and pills, has it closely con0unct %ars and s6uare 2un and semi4se@tile #scendant, with a wider con0unction to Uranus, and 9a6uel Gelch, another star mainly (nown for her gorgeous figure, has it e@actly on the 5escendant, three degrees from Neptune. 2hirley %ac&aine who played a happy hoo(er in fourteen films has her &ilith con0unct Venus within a few degrees in the sign Pisces. Ghere not specified, aspects are within one to two degrees. :uite a different collection of indi)iduals with a prominent &ilith seem to share an interest in the occult and in)ol)ement with witchcraft, including 2ybil &ee( who has it e@actly on the 5escendant with a close se@tile to Uranus on one side and a two4degree orb se@tile to Pluto on the other side, and Pat %ontandon who had it con0unct a first house 2aturn within minutes, and who was cursed by a disgruntled guest and then dogged by disasters for a year. !n contrast to Pat3s real4life brush with witchcraft, EliBabeth %ontgomery played a liberated witch in the tele)ision series -/ewitched.. 2he has &ilith con0unct her Hth house cusp, closely trine %ars and octile 2aturn in #6uarius. 2till another collection can be made of people in)ol)ed in power struggles of one sort or another. #ngela 5a)is, the a)owed Communist professor in the Uni)ersity of California who spent years fighting the establishment has the &ilith, Uranus, %ars con0unction in 1emini mentioned for Tuesday Geld, but it is first house for 5a)is where Geld has it in the <Dth house. 5a)is fought openly while Geld li)ed in the fantasy world of $ollywood, drin(, drugs, and affairs. # number of women fought for or o)er their children, with &ilith connected to the fifth house. %adalyn 73$air who opposed prayer in school and too( the battle clear to the 2upreme Court only to ha)e her son become a Christian and renounce his mother3s atheism, had &ilith in her Ith house of children. %arianne #lireBa married an #rab and when he decided to di)orce her, she fought through the courts to retain custody of the childrenJan unheard of situation in the %oslem world. $er &ilith is also in the Ith house of children. #nita /ryant fought to protect her children from homose@ual teachers. 2he has &ilith con0unct Pluto which rules the Ith house, with 2corpio on the Ith cusp, and the Pluto4&ilith con0unction is in a close T4s6uare to 2aturn, %oon, and the nodes of the %oon8 all in fi@ed signs for power struggles, but in mutable houses for ethical issues and with media attention. The cases of women who were de)oted to their children, whether that de)otion was always wise, certainly does not support the myth of &ilith as hostile to children. !t does fit the mythical demand for e6uality with a mate8 the refusal to be subordinate. # number of the famous women in &ois 9odden3s boo( ha)e close con0unctions of &ilith and Pluto. /esides #nita /ryant, there is Pearl /ailey with a history of four or fi)e marriages8 /etty Ford who became First &ady when her husband became President of the U.2.#. who has the con0unction in Cancer in the <?th house, mar(ing her role as mother of four children and often single parent since her husband tra)eled a great deal8 :ueen %argarethe of 5enmar( who was born to power as a royal princess and became the first female to rule 5enmar(. 9uby ;eeler3s Pluto4&ilith con0unction was in 1emini in the <<th house, in a grand trine to %oon42aturn in #6uarius in the Ath house and !carus in &ibra in the third house. Though her early life was a struggle, she e)entually married happily and retired to raise four children. # )ariation on the power theme comes with Patty $earst who started as )ictim of a (idnapping, 0oined her rebel captors, and ended up with a period in 0ail. Patty3s &ilith is con0unct 2aturn in 2corpio. Ginnie 9uth udd, a con)icted murderer, had &ilith in the <?th house at the midpoint of Pluto and Neptune. Charles %anson, charismatic leader, in)ol)ed in occultism and con)icted instigator of se)eral murders, has &ilith in #ries in the twelfth house closely con0unct the #nti)erte@ *similar to another #scendant, and con0unct $idalgo *to be considered in a later issue of The Mutable Dilemma,. %anson3s %ars4Neptune con0unction in the fifth house was closely 6uincun@ &ilith and

#nti)erte@. /oth Pluto and &ilith may be (eys to a dogged persistence to the end, to death if necessary. Part of the lesson of letter eight is recogniBing when we ha)e gone far enough, (nowing how to let go. Ge may end chapters consciously or in)ite it unconsciously with any of the water factors in astrology. The normal focus of water is inward, but when it is mi@ed with other elements, as it usually is, or when we ha)e not yet learned to handle that part of life, self4mastery may become control of others. %i@tures of letters eight and ten often see( or are gi)en e@ecuti)e power. #nother princess who became a :ueen is /eatri@ of $olland with &ilith in Capricorn in the <?th house in a close con0unction to %ercury. 2till another person concerned with power is /etty Friedan, well4(nown feminist, who has &ilith con0unct her 2un4!carus con0unction, all in #6uarius, opposite Neptune and trine the %C, showing a self4made radical, not someone born to the purple. Then there is 9ose %ary Goods, the famous secretary to 9ichard Ni@on who is presumed to ha)e erased the incriminating portion of a tape about his in)ol)ement in the Gatergate scandal that e)entually cost him the Presidency of the U.2.#. 9ose %ary has &ilith e@actly on the #scendant opposite !carus on her 5escendant. For Christina 7nassis, &ilith con0unction Venus in 2agittarius in the >th house is a (ey to the power of )ast inherited wealth but also to multiple marriages. /y the time ! had wor(ed through the charts in the 9odden boo(, and put &ilith in a )ariety of charts of family, friends, clients, etc., ! was getting a sense of &ilith as another Pluto in the chart, or we might say another form of letter eight. !t seemed to be symboliBing all the )aried potentials of Pluto8 the use of se@ as a way to power, power struggles to achie)e e6uality, interest in the occult including witchcraft, inheritance, and royalties in other cases, power coming through marriage or through birth into royalty, etc. For the moment, ! ha)e accepted as a wor(ing hypothesis that &ilith can be read as similar to PlutoC basically a search for self4(nowledge and self4mastery which would include the unconscious association suggested by . &ehman but not noted much in the 9odden boo( charts. Ghen we turn the power out instead of in, and try to control the world instead of oursel)es, then &ilith and Pluto can symboliBe a )ariety of power acti)ity. &i(e Pluto, &ilith seems to want a mate and is often prominent in people who ha)e long and de)oted marriages, or *more often, in people who ha)e multiple marriages. !t is not easy to achie)e e6uality in marriage, and ! thin( &ilith symboliBes a search for it and will not settle for less.
