The Scofflaw Cocktail

Ingredients Instructions
Makes 1 Cocktail
 1 ounce rye whiskey
 1 ounce dry vermouth 1 In a glass filled with ice, mix all the ingredients. Shake and strain
into a chilled cocktail glass.
 1/4 - 3/4 ounce grenadine
(to taste)
 1/2 ounce lemon juice
 1 dash orange bitters
Notes
 Adapted from "The Official Mixer's Manual," by Gavin Duffy (1934).
 Scofflaw is a great word. The etymology is as follows: In 1923, a rich Prohibitionist wanted to
"stab awake the conscience" of those who drank and offered two hundred dollars to whoever could
come up with the best word to describe "a lawless drinker of illegally made or obtained liquor."

 2 ounce bourbon
about whipping the egg white; if you shake the drink with ice, you
won't get a good froth.

mix and chill. Strain into a chilled glass. If desired, top with a few
drops of Angostura bitters and, with a straw, swirl into the design
of your choice.

stick Bombay Sapphire. What will mix well with it? Well the
botanicals used in flavoring this product include almonds so a
little amaretto will draw out that flavor. Also in Sapphire are
grains of paradise which have an orange hint to them. Now
along with the amaretto and a few orange bitters to play off the
grains of paradise we are developing a light amber hue to the
cocktail. To cut the bitterness of the gin and bitters, simple
syrup or, better yet, agave nectar, finish this off creating a sweet
aromatic zesty aperitif." Anthony DeSerio.

The East Ender

Ingredients Instructions

 3 ounces dry gin 1 Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice. Add the ingredients in order,
 1 ounce sweet vermouth stir briefly, and garnish.
 5 dashes Angostura bitters
 1 flamed (optional)
orange twist, as garnish

Notes
The East-Ender, for all intents and purposes, is merely a Manhattan made with gin, but I can't
find a similar recipe anywhere, unless you want to call it a Gin & It - gin and Italian, or sweet,
vermouth - with bitters. Given that the Manhattan has been my drink of choice for, oh, let's just say
that it's over a dozen years at this point, none of my friends were very surprised when I told them
about the East-Ender, though I must say that it's been a delight to see their faces when they taste the
drink. It works very well indeed. Best of all, though, the East-Ender is most definitely a session
cocktail. Take her for a spin around the dance floor. She's got a lovely pair of gams.
