The Thanksgiving holiday brings to mind the things for which I am grateful. There are obvious and expected ones like family, faith and friends. But God also brought to mind some men from my childhood. As a child I remember going on three fishing trips. Since there was no dad in my life, I was pretty much on my own for those kind of outdoor men experiences. My cousin Billy took me to a pond, where oddly enough he often fished with my dad. For two hours he untangled my line, freed up hooks and endured endless chatter from a seven year old. Pat Locker was my deacon/neighbor. We camped out at the lake in the back of his pick-up with the Butlers. It rained almost all night. The wind blew our cover away. I drank my first cup of coffee. (Five spoons of sugar and it still tasted terrible.) My Uncle James lived in Florida. He took me flounder fishing when I was ten. It was dark and we walked through knee deep mud, cold salt water, with nothing but a flashlight and sharp stick. I was terrified, but tried not to show it. What terrible creatures lurked there? Three hours later I gladly returned to dry land. My cousin, my deacon, my uncle were there to catch fish, I was there for their company. Three men who took time to include a shy, insecure kid and make him feel wanted, important and a man. Two of those men are no longer living, but the significance of all their effort is etched in my heart with gratitude. So when you count your blessings this Thanksgiving include all the obvious ones, but perhaps there is someone, who if only for a short time helped you along the way, thank God for them. If possible write a note or tell them in person. Even better, pass that blessing on to someone else. Children spell love differently than adults. We spell it L-O-V-E. Children spell it T-I-M-E. Ill see you Sunday.
