The News of Grace

Volume 36, no. 11 November 2013

THE HARVEST
And Jesus said to them, Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. And he told them a parable, saying, The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops? And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:15-21)

It is that time of year throughout our nation as the harvest is being gathered. Some farmers may have finished this task a while ago and their grain bins may be full or maybe only half full depending on the yield. Others may still have some fields to harvest and are counting on good weather so that their harvest may go well. The Scriptures record these words of Jesus, that the Lord makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. (Matthew 5:45) There are those who live only for themselves spurning the God of creation, failing to recognize that He is the great Provider, who may have a more abundant harvest than those who humble themselves before God and acknowledge Him to be the source of all of their blessings. That should not be a surprise. However the real surprise is found at the end of Jesus parable. In the parable found above we find that a rich man was truly blessed by his land, the sun and the rain that aided the growth of his crops. He had so much bounty from his harvest that he had

to figure out what he was going to do with it all. It is kind of like going out and buying a few clothing items and finding that there is no room in your closet for them. Do you have more than your drawers and closets can hold? Do you find it difficult to part with some of your stuff while at the same time desiring to have more? I have some things that I should have gotten rid of a long time ago. There are some things that I have that leave me wondering why I got them in the first place. What happens next in this earthly story with a heavenly meaning is really puzzling if you think about it. The rich man determines to take down his existing barns and build larger ones so that he can store this great harvest and then take life easy. Wouldnt it make sense to just add on to what he had or just build a couple of new barns? Please notice as well that nothing is mentioned about thanking the Lord for his windfall or using a portion of his bounty to share in the Lords work. Nothing is mentioned about using any of his bounty to assist the poor or the vulnerable. He certainly is concerned only about what I refer to as the unholy trinity, me, myself and I. We may need to confess that about ourselves. As November comes around we know the end of the year is not far behind. With that come all of the holiday festivities which begin as we observe a National Day of Thanksgiving, this year on November 28th. Just what that means anymore is up to interpretation. The Thanksgiving meal for many may be fuel for the energy needed to get those door buster bargains that have moved into various parts of Thanksgiving Day. Here at Grace we gather for worship that morning and are fed with Gods Word and in turn offer Him our thanksgiving and praise for all that we have from the harvest. The Service has been well attended by members and guests alike. I know that there are local congregations that meet on Wednesday evening for their Thanksgiving observance and others that do so the Sunday before or the Sunday after. Nevertheless I am always puzzled why all the church parking lots that I pass on Thanksgiving morning are empty. The very name of the holiday implies that we focus not on ourselves but upon someone else. Obviously we do not thank

ourselves. Certainly we all need to thank the one who does the food preparation for the family and friend turkey dinner. Maybe you could volunteer for the cleanup detail. At the same time let me encourage you to remember to thank the Lord and invite His presence with you and those you celebrate that holiday with. Let me further encourage you to begin that day here at Grace to offer thanks to God for the bounty we receive from the harvest. As we conclude one year and prepare to move into another we all need to take an inventory of all that we have and the barns we use to store all of our stuff. We also need to ask if we are using a portion of our respective harvests to be rich toward God. Properly understood the things we store in our barns are a trust from the Lord. They are to be used for our well-being and enjoyment, as well as giving us an opportunity to be more than the rich man was who became a fool in the parable. What good was all that he had stored away when the Lord told him, this night your soul is required of you? Then Jesus gives us the personal application of this story. So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. Please remember to support the Lords work that we do together here at Grace. First of all involve yourself in that work. Be faithful in worship and the study of Gods Word. Use your time and your talents in service to Him as an offering of your thankfulness for all that He has done for you. Further give from your treasures to share in the costs of ministry that we do here as well. A proper balance of each of these three, time, talent and treasure is what it means to be rich toward God. Finally it is always good to have pews that are filled with Gods people for an hour or so one day a week. Think about that, one or two hours in a week that has 168 of them. During that time the Lord is preparing you for an eternal harvest, a heavenly banquet where He is the host and you are the guest, where there is an eternal abundance stored up for you forever. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving Pastor Walter

Director of Parish Music

Greetings in the name of our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ! This month I will talk about All People That on Earth Do Dwell (LSB 791). The text is a paraphrase of Psalm 100 by a Scottish exile named William Kethe. The tune, OLD HUNDREDTH, was specifically written for this paraphrase. Before I talk about the specifics of the hymn, a note about why this hymn was written. In the Calvinist/Reformed tradition, the only music the congregation is allowed to sing in church are the Psalms, and paraphrases of them. Because of this, there were several books of Psalm paraphrased published in Geneva, beginning in 1542, leading up to the complete Psalter being published in 1562. This particular text was first published in the Trentre quartre Pseaumes de David (Thirty-Four Psalms of David) in Geneva in 1551. Since this hymn is a Psalm paraphrase, I will first quote the portion of the Psalm the stanza is based on, then give you that hymn stanza. Psalm 100:1-2: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Stanza One: All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice. Him serve with mirth, His praise forthtell; Come ye before Him and rejoice. We, all people on earth, are instructed to praise the Lord. This is a good thing, as we should certainly praise God at all times. But why? Psalm 100:3: Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Stanza Two: Know that the Lord is God indeed; Without our aid He did us make. We are His folk, He doth us feed, and for His sheep He doth us take. This is the crux of the hymn, the reason we should praise God. First, we praise Him because He made us. I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them (Luthers Small Catechism). He made us His people, and ultimately sent His Son, Jesus Christ, the Good

Shepherd, to suffer and die on the cross for our sins, and raised Him on the third day for our justification. Because of all this, it is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to God our heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 100:4: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! Stanza Three: O enter then His gates with praise; Approach with joy His courts unto. Praise, laud, and bless His name always, For it is seemly so to do. Because of all God has done for us, it is right that we praise Him, give thanks to Him, and bless His name. We use what God has given us, the Holy Scriptures, to return praise to Him. For what could be better than to use the very words He gave to us? Psalm 100:5: For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Stanza Four: For why? The Lord our God is good: His mercy is forever sure. His truth at all times firmly stood And shall from age to age endure. God is unchanging, which is a great comfort amid the chaos of this earthly life. For this we continue to praise Him. When Christians sing the Psalms, we usually add the Gloria Patri (Glory be to the Father, and to the Son) at the end of t he Psalm. This hymn does just that with a doxological stanza. Stanza Five: To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heavn and earth adore, From us and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore. Heavenly Father, God of all grace, govern our hearts that we may never forget Your blessings but steadfastly thank and praise You for all Your goodness in this life until, with all Your saints, we praise You eternally in Your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Peace in Christ, Nathan Beethe, Director of Parish Music
